Flew in to Brendan Shanahan’s new hometown today. Caught the last six minutes of the Blues fest on the radio. Nice.
Honestly, it’s hard to fathom that a team playing for the division gets only two points out of consecutive games with Columbus and St. Louis. It’s pathetic is what it is. And what are we left with after the most recent display of Hank-less offense? Complete and total uncertainty.
How’s Lebda? Don’t know.
Khan(!)/MLive
Lebda was alert and doing fine at the hospital, where he will have further tests to determine if there’s any facial injuries. Nieminen, who visited him at the hospital after being ejected from the game, hit Lebda from behind, driving his head into the metal partition that separates the glass at 6:32 of the first period. Lebda was bleeding and wheeled off the ice on a stretcher with his head and neck immobilized.
“The big thing is you don’t want any breakage,’’ Babcock said. “At this time, we haven’t heard anything negative.’’
How’s the offense? Don’t know.
36 shots over the final two periods yesterday? Nifty. We’ve seen this act before in the springtime and it sucks high and hard. Bertuzzi looks great. He had the second most minutes of any forward yesterday with 18+ and the second most PP minutes, behind Holmstrom, of any forward with nearly 7. But we all know he’s not the linchpin.
Kulfan/Detnews
Henrik Zetterberg expects to be ready for the playoffs—but he’s realistic.
With any back injury, it’s a bit of a guessing game.
“If it’s the same progress as it’s been the last week, I’ll be playing,” Zetterberg said. “But you never know with the back. A little tweak, or something, and you’re right back at the beginning.”
I was actually thinking today that it may not be the back at all, as I’m sure some of you imagined at one point or another. I thought it might be his wrist acting up again and some institutional secrety hiding that fact. But, no. It’s the back. Even Holland and company aren’t capable of floating that kind of lie without a leak.
How’s the division? Who do we have if the choke job continues? Don’t know.
Right now the Wings sit two points back with a game in hand and the final war with Bubba on Thursday. We’ve got the Duckies on Tuesday. If trends continue, the Wings win that one and away we go. But who the hell knows with this team right now.
Other than Lebda’s health, which appears to be fine—other than a concussion—the significant concern is which team is going to show up after the regular season’s over. Naturally, that hinges on Hank. And as for him? Well…we just don’t know.
Oh and one final tidbit for the asshats who continue to boo Sergei Fedorov? Ever think he might be starting to thrive on it? Has that crossed your minds geniuses? It’s occurred to his teammates. Have you read about their reaction when he entered the lockerroom after his winner the other night?
They boo’d. Then everybody had a good laugh.
And when you start to whine about “how he left,” I suggest you start thinking how you’re going to treat Brendan Shanahan if and when he returns to the Joe in a different sweater. You gonna boo him too? I’m betting you don’t. And when you decide that’s not in your game plan, consider who meant more to all three Cups…Shanny or Fedorov?
Idiots. Let’s take the kids to the Joe and boo one of the greatest Wings in history. Brilliant.

Can you really blame a guy for wanting to be paid? Maybe myself should start booing my friends when they get a better paying job. Sergei helped bring an end to over 40 years of dissapointments, he should be remembered for that. He did his part, then moved on to a better opprotunity for himself (hisself?). The fact that Columbus players are making fun of those Idiot fans cracks me up.

They play Columbus and Chicago a few more times, I think O-Joe. You can probably power-wash the deck, clean out the basement and garage, and get the gutters cleaned out by the playoffs.
I’m having a hard time even thinking about hockey now that baseball season is approaching and it was nice enough to go to the playground with my sister and 23-month old nephew. Nothing like spending time playing on the swings and catching a kid at the bottom of the slide to make you look forward to spring.

While we’re talking about idiots I’d like to add four types of people I’d include on a list of those worthy of the moniker:
1) People who compare Shanahan’s rep in Detroit favorably to Fedorov’s while they were both on the team, at any point, ever.
2) People who think Shanahan’s departure from Detroit was as acrimonious or fan-anger-inducing as Fedorov’s, at any point, ever.
3) People who compare Shanahan’s impact on the Cup-worthiness of those Detroit teams favorably to Fedorov’s, at any point, ever.
4) People who give a tinker’s damn what fires up either Fedorov or the Jackets in 2007, at any point, ever.
As far as booing Fedorov goes… if a teams’ fans can’t boo a guy like Fedorov who absolutely ditched the team and likely killed at least one (if not two or more) legitimate Cup runs, then people must not be able to boo any player who leaves a team, ever.
I think Hasek deserved to get absolutely pelted with boo’s for the period of time between his Detroit career and his return, too.
Hey, Fedorov put in in the Detroit Fans eye the last game. Bummer.
At least it’s not in their backs like it was the last time he wielded the proverbial blade. That’s an improvement.

I hate to admit it, but I’m gonna boo Shanny when he comes to the Joe. I was really upset about his very Fedorov-ian comments about not being the “#1 son” in fans’ eyes in comparison to Stevie, and his gushy comments about becoming a Ranger made him sound like being a Red Wing—and I have no doubt that he would have been offered the “C” if he stayed—was painful.
I would, however, boo him once and be done with it. No boos throughout the game, no multiple, repeated booings, just one big boo, the end.
Sergei does thrive on those boos now. Negative cheering always comes back to bite you in the ass—whether the Preds like it or not, the “Modano is a baby” chants gave Jim Lites the chance to voice complaints that at least a dozen teams wanted to say.
Time’s passed. Sergei’s moved on, and he really was one of the best Red Wings ever. I’d like to think that most Wings fans have moved on and appreciate his contributions, too.
Regarding the present Wings, despite Babcock’s comments that Datsyuk’s running the boat, it’s pretty obvious that Hank stirs the drink. We need him back, the sooner the better, and we need his back to hold up.
I didn’t buy Kulfan’s “inflamed herniated disc” spiel, but as it turns out, he was the only one who had it right. Most herniations heal without surgery, but they’re tricky buggers, too, and until Hank probably gets an undisclosed MRI that says he’s good to go, he won’t.

I was stuck with the Blues’ feed for the game yesterday (thank you, NHL Center ice) and it was hell having to listen to John Kelly talk about the Wings. They were very critical and the Wings deserved it. Have the Wings forgotten to play the first 20 minutes lately?
I still don’t understand why Babcock went with Bertuzzi in both shootouts.
It is obvious how much Zetterberg means to this team. They looks lost without him. It is nice to see Pavel stepping up but he is no Hank. I think this is the best statement of this post,
“Other than Lebda’s health, which appears to be fine—other than a concussion—the significant concern is which team is going to show up after the regular season’s over.”
Today’s playoff matchup has the Wings playing Vancouver. Better than the “Team we do not speak of” but not as confident about that as I was.
I still believe Hasek’s goaltending is very suspect. Who knows, they could prove me wrong, wouldn’t be the first time.

It was a nice day, yesterday. I cleaned out the boat and gave it a good wash down. That’s good.
Wait, the Wings played yesterday? Oh, it was only St. Louis. No wonder I forgot. And the Wings played down to the competition? Wow, there’s a shocka.
Do we play the Blues again this season? I really should clean all those leaves out of the rain gutters.
(I’ll be sure to tune in <s>Tuesday</s> Monday though when the Ducks come waddling in).
