Kukla's Korner

Abel to Yzerman

Abby Got Me Off, Man

Home Keys is on board.  The Emperor told me.  Two years at $787,500 each.  The kid bought in.  He and Helm will be the cornerstones of our Red Corvette energy line for years to come.

Pretend you are an NHL coach, like the Douche Canoe pretends to have been, and you are facing our Red Wings:

The Flying Circus (Zetterman—Dangle—Angry Chipmunk)
Todd-berculosis—Hairdresser—Mule
Happy—Chopper Willa—Charlie Buckets
The Red Corvettes (Home Keys—God—Eaves/Draper/??)

You know you can’t possibly stop the onslaught that will come for 60 minutes.  A full game.  All lines rolling.  Without mercy.

The Flying Circus will dazzle you with acrobatics.  The Red Corvettes out-gun you and beat you in the corners.  The Hairdresser and Chopper Willa blind your skaters with their whitened teeth.  Their line mates, men with addictions to hookers, baby’s blood, top corners, and 180-proof screech, will molest your goaltender unabated.  Games against the Red Wings will come with viewer discretion warnings for graphic content, like Law & Order: SVU.

Welcome to your nightmare, NHL, the Red Wings are rested and ready to bring Stanley home.

While the Wings have enjoyed their extra long summer vacations, reports have been trickling in about how hard they are working in the offseason, and how hungry they are to return.  The lack of hockey is making many players frenzied.  Holmstrom was causing a ruckus at Zetterman’s beach wedding by using his giant ass to block the sunbather’s rays.  He can’t help it.

Happy’s hookers report that he insists on them wearing helmets during play, and they have to wear mouthguards if they want to bite him. Dangle’s been working at hockey camps in Russia, and while Bertuzzi joined him at the end of July, I’m sure any reports of massive wildfires in the region are completely coincidental.

Would you want to face an entire team with this much built up energy and potential?

With the forward lines stacked deeper than any in the NHL today, it doesn’t really matter that we only have an okay 3rd defensive pairing.  I’ll take our top-4 defencemen over any other team in the league as well.

This is a Wings team nobody can match up against.  The Big Red Machine’s engine is already revving up for the marathon race to claim Cup #12 in a bunch of Tuesdays from now.  If any other team dreams they can take Cup #12 from us this season, we will to turn their dreams into nightmares.

Is it fuching October yet?

Let’s Go Red Wings!!!!!

Thanks, that helps.

I use three sources for ads, Tribalfusion, Valueclick and Google.  At times, a bad ad will get through but is usually caught quickly and then removed.

I set high quality parameters for these ads, no auto audio, auto expand, etc. but at times they do get through.

Willie Mitchell signed two years with the Kings for $3.5M per year.  Now we know where his price range was sitting and that it was nowhere near what we could have afforded for him.

This makes the Salei signing look even better.  Ruslan may not be as good as mitchell, but he’s not five times worse, despite being paid five times less.  Detroit got the better value.

Paul, for what it’s worth, the only problem I’ve had on the site recently is on Voox’s interview w/ Bettman. The embed code for the clip just had its filthy way with my browsers.  I’ve never seen that happen before.

Agreed!  Factor in getting Chopper Willa in the fold at half the price of Mitchell in addition to Salei and Kenny looks very smart.

The third line much improved over a year ago.  A steady veteran presence on the blue line to pair with Big E.  I like it.  Also, Big Willie is one blow to the head from being $3.5mil circling the drain.  Not a risk I’d be all that willing to incur in the salary cap era.

Or, we can wait until the season when we’re slobberin the 3rd line’s balls. Either way, I want to hear some choking on carpet.

Agreed on the Mitchell signing, good for him.  Good for us, and good for a bit of STFU for the doubters of the Great Ken Holland out there.  Does anybody know anything about the History of Holland?  They are legendary tyrants and slave drivers.  I should know, I work for one at the mine.  Great, great businessmen.  Always find a way to get what they want.  And without ever giving much up.

Holland wears his name well, is what I’m saying.

Why, exactly? I say it’s a good signing for LA on the ice, but I also say they overpaid.  Quite frankly,. LA was in panic mode and may have payed Mitchell $4.5m if that’s what it took, once they realized they had no hope still of landing Kovalchuk.  And quite frankly, I think they were trying to spend some of that money to put an end to any speculation.

Consider this:  LA was not even amongst Mitchell’s supposed possible destinations, not at ANY time.  What that tells me is that they probably came late to negotiations for him, teams like SJ and DET were understandably concerned and offering Mitchell much less, LA was panicked though and offered a lot more to get a deal done and quick.  Had LA not panicked, who knows where Mitchell ends up, and for how much, but I’m willing to be it would have been considerably less, maybe around $2/yr.  SJ and DET didn’t have the cap space, neither did VAN… but LA did so they said “Screw it, give him 3.5m and seal this up now”...

To say that Holland knew that LA was going to panic and offer Mitchell that much seems like a pretty big stretch to me.

I think the stretch is to say that Mitchell would have gone for $2M a season had Detroit simply waited longer.  Waiting for signings is what hurt the Wings last offseason.  Instead, Holland got Modano and Salei for less than Mitchell signed for with a “panicked” LA squad.

Nobody knows what Holland offered Mitchell, but I’d be willing to bet it was probably close to that $2M offer and Mitchell turned it down.  That makes it a good gamble on Holland’s part to move on and sign other players.  He may not have known that LA would throw an overpayment his way, but he knew he’d hurt his team if he waited around on the off-chance that Willie Mitchell would come crawling back.

Regarding the AV discussion:

I got a trojan virus off the “Let’s Go Wings” forums pages this morning on my WORK laptop.  That was fun explaining to the IT guys.  A while back (maybe 6 months ago) I got a similar virus off the Red Wings Bleacher report pages.

Those bastard viruses are everywhere.  The most recent strain is a pop up window that says “you’re infected” and then acts like it’s scanning your PC.  You can’t shut down the window or cont-alt-delete to get task manager and stop it.  This morning the way I aborted it was just ripped the laptop out of the dock.

After I rebooted, Symantec confirmed a virus had been downloaded.  I hate the hacker scum who create all of that crap.

Ahhh, viruses.  My brother had a virus so bad on his pc no regular anti-virus program would even recognize it was there.  Finally, as I was nearing the end of my rope, the Windows Malicious Software Removal tool identified it, but couldn’t even begin to remove it.  The only option left was to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows.

Awesome.  I’m in the engineering consulting end of things and Freeport is our biggest client (before you ask: no, I don’t work for Golder).  We have even opened up an office in Silver City recently.  I’ve done a good bit of work at the Tyrone and Cobre mines, a little less at Chino (though some of my coworkers seem to work exclusively at that site).  I’ve recently begun working down at the Copper Queen in Bisbee.  I’m in that engineering consultant group (before you ask: no, I don’t work for Golder).

The area around Climax is beautiful, and the site itself is impressive.  Anytime I’m headed to Southern CO, I make the detour to drive through that area.

Hmm…I know we have many consultants other than Golder…IMC perhaps?  Crazy about working on Tyrone and Cobre, my friend from school just took a job at Tyrone and grew up like 5 minutes from that mine.  Cobre is a rich deposit, some lovely rocks I’ve taken from the bottom of that pit.  And Bisbee?  It’s only where my parents are from, so I’m familiar with that area too.  In fact, when I was working for Corporate in college some of my long range projects involved Bisbee.  It’d be sweet as heck to return there after the history I have.  Plus their coffee shops downtown are super delicious.  Who would have thought the best place to get a latte would be in a condemned mining town?

No, I work for a slightly smaller firm.  Telesto Solutions, Inc.  I work in our Fort Collins office. Most of our work these days is reclamation-related, so we don’t get to do as much around the active sites as I would like.  I was doing a drilling program on the Tyrone properties when they were still bringing up the Safford site in ‘07 (I think everything might have still been Phelps-Dodge at that point).  It was all anyone was talking about.  As for Bisbee..I haven’t been down there yet.  I was supposed to go down in June, but one of my Idaho clients started having panic attacks regarding some permitting, so I had to put out that little fire.  I’m hoping to go down this fall for some soil sampling because I have heard what a wonderful town it is.

edillac, try clearing your cookies and cache, that may help.

Ads are probably part of it.

Not sure if many people are aware of how ads work these days, but if you allow your search engine to gain information about you and let the engine retain your search engine history, it could cause some issues.

Say you went to google and browsed AV Kaspersky then came to KK.  If Kaspersky is an advertiser on KK, odds are you will start seeing Kaspersky ads on KK.

This holds true for many products and services you may be searching for and not only searched for, just happened to visit their website.

Those products and services will follow you around the web whenever possible.

Once upon a time I had the same problem.
I flirted with adblocker and it just caused some instability in IE and firefox with the add-on.

I converted Firefox and IE to private browsing, and now use Google Chrome almost exclusively when not dealing with financial stuff.  Google Chrome works much better for daily browsing, but I still clear all cookies/history (as Paul suggested) and run crap cleaner weekly.  I have removed AVG from most of my computers, as it seems to slow them down while it scans each page before downloading.  I find Avast works much better, and catches all threats, even when surfing porn.  I have removed viruses from family and friends computers and interestingly they were all using paid for virus software, none of them had Avast running.  I deleted their AV and installed Avast for them and have never seen their computers again.

I forgot to mention firewalls….
They are often the culprit for slow loading, especially if your provider routinely uses a firewall and in addition you have one or two running on you own computer…
I have been advised that when using wireless routers, no firewall is necessary, so I disable all firewalls on my computers.  Been doing that for some time and a lot of problems just disappeared when I made that change.
This might not be a good idea if you run your computers online unattended (24/7).  I shut all my computers down after each session.

Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in on the performance and security issues.

First, Paul’s right about tracking methods to serve up advertising. In a few isolated instances, we’ve seen it have a huge impact on performance.  I’d advise anyone who has problems with KK loading times to download the Firebug plugin for Firefox and profile the items that are loading. (I think Safari and Chrome have similar tools)  You’ll find the problem right away (for me it’s always been an ad script.)

Second, HTT, don’t count too much on your router’s firewall to protect you. Yes, it’ll keep out out most random traffic, but it’s really a first line of defense. And just because you trust a site, it doesn’t mean it’s safe. It pains me to admit that even the Herm2Hockeytown site got hacked briefly at one point because of a vulnerability in a 3rd party script. At that point you want to trust your computer’s firewall policy.

Last, it doesn’t really matter what ad services Paul’s running…all of them have had their problems in the past.  Google has served up malware on several ocassions.  Last week Slashdot pointed to an interesting article up about the lengths scammers will go to in trying to deceive these companies. (Link for anyone interested.) It’s worth reading if only to understand how those types of exploits show up in ads in the first place.

This is where everything gets confusing…
I was advised by an IT techie that firewalls that are dependent on your operating system are pretty worthless compared to an independent firewall (router), and not to piggyback firewalls.  Not sayin’ you are wrong, but where does one actually go to get the truth.  I had problems when piggybacking firewalls that just evaporated when I stopped using the Windows firewall and/or the AV firewall.  Ten computers later, I have had no problems.

Yeah, I can empathize with trying to figure out who and what to believe. One thing I’ve learned (repeatedly) is that in this business, when someone makes a blanket statement that Option 1 is worthless, Option 2 is all you need, they’re usually not very clear on what they’re talking about.  Firewall conflicts will pop up when they’re not configured right, but that just makes a stronger case for resolving the conflicts rather than simply turning one of them off completely and relying on a misconfigured device. Again, I admit that working with this stuff has made me overly paranoid, and I don’t doubt for a second that the single firewall has worked for you…I just suspect there’s may be a bit of luck in there as well.

OK I’ve been an IT professional for 15 years.  for what it’s worth, I have no firewall running on my PC.  I rely on the hardware (router) firewall.  I’ve have always had the understanding that they’re far more secure.  plus, look at it this way…

if you have the firewall only running on the router, even if they break through that they STILL have to break into your PC.  if you have no firewall on the router, but one on your PC….once they break into it they’re already in your PC.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
