Previous entry: The Feeling I Get When I Look To The West?  Nausea.  Let’s Wrap This MF’er Up With A Live Blog

Arrogant?  Hell Yes.  Still.  Always.

Just when you thought Pittsburgh fans and media had settled into comfortable acceptance that the Pens are actually Stanley Cup champs?  In rides another idiot to prove that this particular community of “fans” and media has no concept how to deal with success.

Rossi

Nill added that “it goes on and on” with the Red Wings, but he’s wrong. History suggest it just ends one day for dynasties — often when they least expect it.

After all, it takes a lot of arrogance to believe that what goes up doesn’t eventually come down.

Paul posted a lot more at the main page, but it really boils down to that closing passage.

Cup champs. Best record in the league.  Living in a city that has had more pro sports success than any other the last two years…and still their inferiority complex is so severe that they can’t stop focusing on the Wings.  It’s what we’ve said it would be and it’s awesome.

I guess, though, when you have a “captain” like this….

Russo’s Rants

So in a crucial point in the game, Zidlicky took Crosby off the ice for seven minutes. In the third, Brent Burns got away with snapping Crosby’s stick in half (Crosby was called for the same thing earlier in the game on Mikko Koivu). Crosby was furious there was no call, threw up his arms and got a new stick with play stopped. Then, he kept on yelling at the ref after the linesman blew his whistle. So on a PP, the linesman dropped the puck and the Wild cleared the zone. And then Crosby was upset at that.

Antics like this are the reason why many people say Crosby doesn’t get superstar calls. You can’t be throwing up your arms and screaming at refs all game long. I respect the tremendous stardom and competitiveness all the time from Crosby. He’s a phenomenal player, but he definitely lost his cool tonight.

What’s amazing is Crosby played 23 minutes, 46 seconds and took nine penalty minutes, meaning he spent less than half the game on the Pittsburgh bench.

No one here has ever doubted Rosby’s ability.  He’s a phenomenal talent, an amazing player.  He’s also a little bitch.  A whiner who disgraces the C worn by actual leaders.

Back to Red Wing arrogance.  Yes. It is a staple of this organ-I-zation and it’s deserved.  Nobody, not a single franchise anywhere, has had the level of sustained superior performance the Wings have displayed for nearly twenty consecutive years.  That’s a dynasty.  Put that in quotes and throw it back at me if you want, even if you claim to be a Wing fan. It is what it is.  A dynasty.

And you’re damn right…we, the fans, are just as arrogant.  Don’t like it? Too bad.  Don’t want to hear about it? It’s not a law to read this blog or any other Wing blog.

Just how arrogant?  Arrogant enough to scoff at the legions of bitter Wing haters who point to our current circumstance and predict the Wings will actually miss the playoffs.  We’re stockpiling that stuff.  Stowing it away.

The Wings are 5-4-3, 11th in the conference, nine points behind Denver.  Are we nervous? Yes.  But more because it’s just an unusual scenario and we’re not eager to accept it.  Want to know why the realists among us are sitting back, silently watching the riots? Because the Wings have Ken Holland and Jim Nill and Mike Babcock and Steve Yzerman. Even Jimmy Devellano.  The greatest collection of hockey minds anywhere.

But Fil’s down, Franzen’s out..we’ve lost 130 goals.  Osgood’s inconsistent, the defense is leaky, Brad McCrimmon is still employed.

Don’t care.  The ship will be righted.  Take a look at last night and tell me.  Was that a fluke or was that the way this team can, and eventually will, consistently play.

Arrogance is not stumbled upon.  It doesn’t take you by surprise and it’s not misguided.  It’s earned and it’s healthy and it’s ours.

Again, as we said yesterday, climb off if you want.  Seek another wagon.  Those who stay on this one will be rewarded, as usual.

All the attention was on Rosby last night, due to the absence of the Pens best player in Malkin, and that whiny little POS couldn’t handle it, he snapped.

Why did such a pussy get into the sport of hockey? You can tell he spent 90% of his career never getting hit. Now, it’s all too much for poor Cindy, and he isn’t going to take it anymore.

The NHL has made a lot of mistakes over the years; but to think that the petulant little crybaby Rosby would be the ‘new face’ of the NHL is about the dumbest thing they’ve ever done.

If I’m not mistaken, the Wings have made the playoffs for eighteen (18) consecutive seasons.

In their 18 year run, they have:  won 4 Cups (in the past 12 years), made it to the SCF in two seasons, and the CF in two seasons.

The Wings rank sixth all-time in the NHL for consecutive playoff appearances:
29 Boston Bruins (1968-96)
28 Chicago Blackhawks (1970-97)
24 Montreal Canadiens (1971-94)
23 St. Louis Blues (1980-2002)
21 Montreal Canadiens (1949-69)
18 Detroit Red Wings (1991-2009)

The Wings have won the Stanley Cup 11 times, no other non-Canadian team has won it more than 5 times:

Montreal Canadiens (24*)
1915-16*; 1923-24; 1929-30; 1930-31; 1943-44; 1945-46; 1952-53; 1955-56; 1956-57; 1957-58; 1958-59; 1959-60; 1964-65; 1965-66; 1967-68; 1968-69; 1970-71; 1972-73; 1975-76; 1976-77; 1977-78; 1978-79; 1985-86; 1992-93.

Toronto Maple Leafs (13)
1917-18; 1921-22; 1931-32; 1941-42; 1944-45; 1946-47; 1947-48; 1948-49; 1950-51; 1961-62; 1962-63; 1963-64; 1966-67.

Detroit Red Wings (11)
1935-36; 1936-37; 1942-43; 1949-50; 1951-52; 1953-54; 1954-55; 1996-97; 1997-98; 2001-02; 2007-08.

Boston Bruins (5)
1928-29; 1938-39; 1940-41; 1969-70; 1971-72.

Edmonton Oilers (5)
1983-84; 1984-85; 1986-87; 1987-88; 1989-90.

Arrogant, maybe?  Confident, most definitely.

Are we nervous?  Hell yes, full of anxiety.

Last year, the Wings were schizophrenic, but managed to win most of the time.  As Holland said the other day, they could play 45 mins and win, on talent.

This year, not so much, they have lost too much scoring, and the Wings “D” , on most nights is about as solid as a sieve.

Last nights game was a glimmer of potential, what reward can be had for a 60 min effort.

You don’t earn the right to be arrogant/haughty/confident by what you have done in a season or two.  You may be good as compared to some, but can you boast a demonstrated record of consistent, sustained excellence.

Dynasties are measured in decades. The aura that goes with that success isn’t diminished in 10 games.  But questions/issues are bound to arise.

Here is one: Why is Brad McCrimmon still employed?

Crosby did complain after the no call on the broken stick, but any player would’ve been frustrated after they had just been called for the same thing on the previous shift. If that was Mike Richards, who complains/whines/cries more than Crosby, he would’ve been noted by Russo for his fiery leadership.

Also, who cares if Crosby got in a fight? He had just taken a borderline slew-foot, and tried to do something about it. If that were Jarome Iginla, he would’ve been noted for fighting someone to fire up his team.

I don’t know why Russo’s panties are in a bunch. Crosby complained one time, and had a mediocre fight with a mediocre player. Who cares?

And this statement was all I needed to hear about your hockey knowledge.

I don’t actually like Ovechkin.  I agree that he’s not as complete a player as some other superstar forwards because he doesn’t try to play defense.  I agree that he crosses the line between playing hard and playing dirty too often.  But for you to say that he doesn’t care about his team?  Snap off, game over, good night.  Nobody in their right mind puts a series loss all on one player like you just did.

Waaaah, if Ovechkin backchecked they would have beaten the Penguins.

For the record, I’d take Crosby over Ovechkin to wear the Winged wheel because I think being in the Organ-I-zation would really help cure Crosby of his occasional outbursts of petulance.  I’m not convinced you can teach Ovie to play defense, but you can teach Crosby to shut the fuch up and play hockey when he needs to.  Ovechkin has more talent than Crosby; Crosby would be a better fit for the Detroit system and, in Detroit, the whole is definitely greater than the sum of its parts.

Crosby has every right to go after the refs when he feels slighted, but…He tends to go after the refs every time he’s dinged, nicked, or otherwise impeded.  All the game’s great players go after the refs from time to time, but they learn how to pick their spots, because constant badgering gets you nowhere, fast.  I hope Crosby will get the spot-picking down sooner than later, because it will erase a lot of the criticism he receives.

It’s that simple.  Pick your spots.  Lobby at a point in the game when the refs are likely to give you an even-up, lobby when you or a teammate got the snot kicked out of them.  Not when you got slashed or the linesman hurried up a faceoff a hundred and sixty feet from your goal.  That’s all he’s got to do—learn when to speak up and learn when to growl and just play.

I really don’t understand Rossi’s motivation for writing that article….

If that had come from Pensblog, who “specialize” in that type of smack-talking post, I’d understand…. And I’m sure Wings fans would understand it much more as well….

But Rossi had nothing to gain from writing an article whose only intent was to talk shit…. There are plenty of interesting Penguins subjects to write about….

And it’s a little surprising, seeing as Rossi’s recent articles are little more than name-dropping, like how he had a funny moment with Mario in the locker room, or today’s column, where he brags about his relationship during Petr Sykora’s time in Pittsburgh….

Maybe next week he’ll start calling his readers “kiddies” like he did last season, or something condescending like that…

But what do I know, I’m just a peon blogger, not that he nor his paper ever acknowledges any of them… Just part of the reason the Tribune-Review is the Junior Varsity newspaper in town….

Just ticks me off, one of these days we’ll get past the point where every KK article involving either the Wings or Pens turns into the same yapping back and forth….

George James Malik,

I completely agree with what you’re saying. Crosby does let his competetive nature get the best of him sometimes. However, he has really toned down the complaining, especially this season. He was picked apart for diving his rookie year, and that is pretty much all but gone (What NHL player doesn’t draw the occasional penalty). The complaining is still there, but he is learning when to pick his spots. Last night was an example of him letting his frustration get the best of him.

Even if he does learn to shut his yap, he is still going to have this reputation from people who read what another team’s blogger says and base their opinions off of that. It is easy to not watch a game, then see what Mike Russo says in a blog and go from there.

Watch a few Penguin games this year, and you will notice that the diving he was ripped apart for is all but gone, and the complaining is certainly toned down. I just hope he keeps it up.

Now….all we need to do is get him to stop taking the slashing penalties out of frustration…

Not that it excuses him from missing the faceoff, but let’s not forget that the slash on Crosby’s stick was during a powerplay and should’ve resulted in a 5-on-3 for a significant period of time….

Would’ve been nice in a tight game against a good goalie….

You’re almost there, Sid.  You’re just having a hard time with some of the words.

You said 20 years first, genius.

have displayed for nearly twenty consecutive years.

Nope, seem he said nearly twenty.  See “nearly”  means almost, and “twenty” means more than two years of continued success.  Now, you combine those phrases with the rest of the sentence and what you get is that Detroit has made the playoffs 18 seasons in a row.  Now, do you see how eighteen is “nearly twenty”?  Not quite twenty, but almost.

And in that “nearly twenty” years, there have been four cups, two more SCFs and a couple more CFs.

Compare and contrast that to Pittsburgh’s 2 cups, followed by meiocrity, followed by the team almost moving because people didn’t want to come to watch the mediocrity, followed by three straight high lottery picks and THEN followed by two years (please not that TWO is not “nearly twenty”.  It’s “nearly three”.) of success.

“Nearly twenty years” of continued success?  That means ZERO lottery picks, never mind finishing low enough that you could actually get the #1 pick two years out of three.

See how reading comprehension can be useful?

This statement was all I needed to hear about a person’s hockey knowledge.  You’re really going to take a player who plays inconsistent at best on defense?  Who when down and out, doesn’t really care about the team and starts worrying about his stats?  Please.  It’s exactly why Crosby has got the cup before him.  Had Ovie backchecked and played hockey the right way in the play-offs instead of head hunting and worrying about his.  They would have made it further.

Detroit’s very good, even when they are down there good, but you guys can’t talk crap about Pittsburgh because like making fun of the guy talking crap about your city.  it’s time to get off of it, this year is this year.

Dave, I was merely stating my opinion.  I love Alex and I’ve made that well known on this blog.  I think you are very wrong when you say he doesn’t care about his team.  Again, it is my opinion.  I get much more pleasure out of watching Alex play than Sid and that’s just how I [bfeel].  No need to be insulting about my hockey knowledge which I will gladly go toe to toe with you on any time.

You can’t be throwing up your arms and screaming at refs all game long.

Pointing out one reference isn’t all game long.

No one here has ever doubted Crosby’s ability.  He’s a phenomenal talent, an amazing player.  He’s also a little bitch.  A whiner who disgraces the C worn by actual leaders

Yet he Captained the Pens to the ‘09 Cup.So, I think you just pointed out how the C is the most overrated thing in sports. Which means all the so-called “Great Captains” in the past were over-rated as far as their leadership is concerned. And most of the Championship teams probably would have won the Cup anyway. Even Detroit, in ‘97,‘98 & ‘02. So much for Captains. I agree.

If you want people to stop thinking you’re an idiot, you’re going to have to do a better job of conveying when you’re being glib.  That’s what the wink emoticon is for.
