Arrogant? Hell Yes. Still. Always.

Just when you thought Pittsburgh fans and media had settled into comfortable acceptance that the Pens are actually Stanley Cup champs? In rides another idiot to prove that this particular community of “fans” and media has no concept how to deal with success.
Nill added that “it goes on and on” with the Red Wings, but he’s wrong. History suggest it just ends one day for dynasties — often when they least expect it.
After all, it takes a lot of arrogance to believe that what goes up doesn’t eventually come down.
Paul posted a lot more at the main page, but it really boils down to that closing passage.
Cup champs. Best record in the league. Living in a city that has had more pro sports success than any other the last two years…and still their inferiority complex is so severe that they can’t stop focusing on the Wings. It’s what we’ve said it would be and it’s awesome.
I guess, though, when you have a “captain” like this….
So in a crucial point in the game, Zidlicky took Crosby off the ice for seven minutes. In the third, Brent Burns got away with snapping Crosby’s stick in half (Crosby was called for the same thing earlier in the game on Mikko Koivu). Crosby was furious there was no call, threw up his arms and got a new stick with play stopped. Then, he kept on yelling at the ref after the linesman blew his whistle. So on a PP, the linesman dropped the puck and the Wild cleared the zone. And then Crosby was upset at that.
Antics like this are the reason why many people say Crosby doesn’t get superstar calls. You can’t be throwing up your arms and screaming at refs all game long. I respect the tremendous stardom and competitiveness all the time from Crosby. He’s a phenomenal player, but he definitely lost his cool tonight.
What’s amazing is Crosby played 23 minutes, 46 seconds and took nine penalty minutes, meaning he spent less than half the game on the Pittsburgh bench.
No one here has ever doubted Rosby’s ability. He’s a phenomenal talent, an amazing player. He’s also a little bitch. A whiner who disgraces the C worn by actual leaders.
Back to Red Wing arrogance. Yes. It is a staple of this organ-I-zation and it’s deserved. Nobody, not a single franchise anywhere, has had the level of sustained superior performance the Wings have displayed for nearly twenty consecutive years. That’s a dynasty. Put that in quotes and throw it back at me if you want, even if you claim to be a Wing fan. It is what it is. A dynasty.
And you’re damn right…we, the fans, are just as arrogant. Don’t like it? Too bad. Don’t want to hear about it? It’s not a law to read this blog or any other Wing blog.
Just how arrogant? Arrogant enough to scoff at the legions of bitter Wing haters who point to our current circumstance and predict the Wings will actually miss the playoffs. We’re stockpiling that stuff. Stowing it away.
The Wings are 5-4-3, 11th in the conference, nine points behind Denver. Are we nervous? Yes. But more because it’s just an unusual scenario and we’re not eager to accept it. Want to know why the realists among us are sitting back, silently watching the riots? Because the Wings have Ken Holland and Jim Nill and Mike Babcock and Steve Yzerman. Even Jimmy Devellano. The greatest collection of hockey minds anywhere.
But Fil’s down, Franzen’s out..we’ve lost 130 goals. Osgood’s inconsistent, the defense is leaky, Brad McCrimmon is still employed.
Don’t care. The ship will be righted. Take a look at last night and tell me. Was that a fluke or was that the way this team can, and eventually will, consistently play.
Arrogance is not stumbled upon. It doesn’t take you by surprise and it’s not misguided. It’s earned and it’s healthy and it’s ours.
Again, as we said yesterday, climb off if you want. Seek another wagon. Those who stay on this one will be rewarded, as usual.

You know what I enjoy? A blog that makes fun of a guy for
Talking about the wings and that’s from pittsburgh.
You call him nd idiot and tell him to get off the wings.
But now your making posts about the Pens? I see it all makes senseRandom capitalization? Check.
Incomprehensible misspellings? Check.
Unable to distinguish between “your” and “you’re”? Check. The “from pittsburgh” is entirely superfluous.

Yes Sir, Dynasty Over.
Nothing to do for Detriot fans but call the waaaaaambulance.
Hey, maybe you guys can talk to Rick Wagoner and the guys over at the UAW and see if they can arrange some kind of bailout for your hockey team? I mean, as long as the rest of the country is keeping your sucky excuse for an economy on life support, maybe they can do it for the Red Wings too…?
Go Pens.

Lots of belly-aching in here. Amazing how delusional Wings fans are. You guys can barely fill your arena every night, yet you act like you have such a die hard fan base. Its comical. You Wings “fans” need to stop being such sissies and man up. Can’t win every year.

Though I do appreciate you idiots taking time out of what I’m sure are very productive days to waste our time with your non-sensical drivel…I would appreciate a little more thought if you’re going to try and insult us. This is a pathetic lot even for trolls, and that, motherf***ers, is saying something.

As a Pittsburgh fan I can see why Rossi enjoys “bashing” the Wings. You guys beat us two years ago and yes even tho we won last year the loss from two years ago still stings. As much as some people would like to dismiss it, the Penguins and Wings are now rivals. Do I think Rossi should have dedicated a post to the wings sufferings? Hell no. It’s far too early in the season to start counting a team out and saying that the “Dynasty” is over. At this point in the season every team is one player acquisition or one coaching change away from going on a winning streak. The Pens were down and out last year but they got it together and eventually won the cup.
Pens fans should be more worried about the ups and downs of the Flyers/Rangers/Capitals more than a team from the West. Come April we can start discussing who we MIGHT see in the Stanley Cup Finals.

you guess wrong. I only think I’m smarter than you.
I’m just worried that with all of your misspellings and poorly constructed arguments that people won’t give you the credit for not being so ridiculously stupid as to actually believe what you typed back there.

Wrong again. I believe you know how to spell the word “guess” correctly, just like I know you know how to spell “believe.” I’m not wholly convinced you know which version of than or then you should be using at any given time, but it’s a work in progress I suppose.
I’m trying to help you pay better attention to what you type before you hit submit because I have faith that you’re more intelligent than most of the Pittsburgh trolls we have around here. I mean, most of them aren’t capable of executing such a good bait-and-switch routine. Wait, that’s not fair. I mean, I’m sure they are capable of doing it. Actually, any idiot could do it. Ok bad example. All that really shows is you’re more committed to spending the time it takes to carry out the routine. Still, there’s just something about you that makes you seem smarter than they are, so I have hope for you. Unfortunately, while you may not spend your time calling us homos, those trolls still come across as having the basic grasp of the English language that eludes you and that’s not a good thing.
For instance, it makes it more difficult to recognize when you’re being glib. After all, what’s the point of doing it if you don’t get credit for it? I’m positive I don’t have to explain the ins and outs of glibness to somebody like you, but the basic point of the whole thing is to let people know that you’re taking their arguments to a ridiculous conclusion and are therefore somehow soundly defeating that argument. It’s a very commonly used practice nowadays even if it’s used wrong, the problem is that if people have a hard time giving you enough credit to think you’re not actually a fan of the ridiculouslness you’re using to paste your opponent, the message is lost. Surely you can appreciate that sentiment?

I also got $5 that after these “fans of the greatest sport on earth” wikipedia offsides, they come back with a post along the lines of “ya huh, I do too, it’s when a player is behind the last player back of the opposing team before the ball” because they didn’t realize they looked up soccer offsides…

The Red Wings and the Penguins stopped playing hockey at the same time in this year’s playoffs. You have tried to takea common euphemism for playoff failure and have failed to utilize it correctly. I guess that makes you a golfer?
Sixburg is also a clever nickname for a football town on a hockey blog. I guess that makes the Wings from Deleventroit? That’s nice when you think about it, Deleventroit has more championships in hockey than Sixburg has in hockey and football combined.
Wanna compare basketball trophies too, while we’re bringing up things that are decidedly non-hockey related?

Would anyone familiar with the paysite (i.e. the forbidden site; the one that causes Happy Smiles) be able to answer a couple questions?
I’m going to be out of town (oot) tomorrow for the start of the game but want to take my laptop so I can watch & LB. I’m guessing I can find an unsecured wireless modem to piggyback off of at my oot location but I’m not sure what impact this may have on my account. I know when you hit 3 IPs, you’re cancelled. Not good. So I want to make sure I can do what I plan to do without jeopardizing my account.
Is it a matter as simple as clicking on the “IP Exceptions” when I logon from the oot location and clicking “Add Exceptions”? (I’m assuming the IP I’m on at the moment will be automatically listed?)
And does this effect my home (original? / primary?) IP? (Do I need to do anything when I get back home for the end of the game and logon, such as “Update Exception”? Or just logon as normal, allow it to recognize my home IP and let the exception expire?)
Any help would be appreciated.
(Feel free to PM me if we want to keep this off the comments.)

Hahaha a homosexual with cancer insult? That’s quite a jump. And I never even came close to bashing Lidstrom. He’s actually one of my favorite players. In fact, I really don’t have a problem with anyone on the Wings except for the idiot who wouldn’t quit about Crosby not shaking Lidstrom’s hand. If you guys make it to the Stanley Cup, Crosby will shake his hand. I’d worry about making the playoffs first.

So it doesn’t matter if Pittsburgh doesn’t pay attention to it. Nice to know. I guess that means the Penguins have only mattered for the last five years.
I’m not a fan of professional basketball. Watching the college guys play is fun. But, if you want to keep arguing about non-hockey related sports, we could bring up your Pirates. I’m from near Kansas City where the Royals play and even I feel comfortable saying that Pirates fans have absolutely nothing to look forward to. What a God-awful abomination of a professional team.
Posted by J.J. from Kansas on 11/03/09 at 08:34 AM ET
Four is still a bigger number than three, right?
There aren’t two eras of NHL history, BP and AP that separate the times before and after the Penguins decided to start gracing the league with their presence. Detroit still has eleven cups, whether any team from PIttsburg was around to contest seven of them. So, yes, we do deserve the right to brag about having eleven cups while you only get to brag about three.
Besides, you’re mixing arguments. We say it’s a dynasty for how good we’ve consistently been for the last 18 seasons. The Penguins were around for all 18 of those. How many times did Pittsburgh make the playoffs during those 18 consecutive years we saw the postseason? So, yeah. We’re arrogant, our team has earned that. Nobody here is saying that it’s a Dynasty because of every single year a franchise has existed. That doesn’t happen.
To discount cups that come before a certain era is ridiculous. There might have been less competition back then, but to say that the accomplishment of those great teams past is somehow lessened because it wasn’t a 30 team league hockey sacrilege.
I don’t think the Pens intentionally tanked to get Fleury, Crosby, Malkin, and Staal, but the fact remains that I’m less impressed with a team that went to the finals two years in a row thanks to four straight years of draft picks no lower than second than I am with a team whose core is comprised of a third rounder, a sixth rounder, a seventh rounder, and a guy who was picked up for a dollar.
Posted by J.J. from Kansas on 11/04/09 at 08:45 AM ET
If the Pirates were sold to Philadelphia I would give two shits. Baseball and basketball are seriously pointless. I couldn’t sit through a whole baseball game unless paid to, and I don’t even have A.D.H.D. It’s an old person sport, very slow, very boring, and overpaid. IMO, since 67’ both teams have won a respectable amount of cups. But coming close doesn’t mean anything. No one cares if you went to the Stanley Cup and lost 28937 times in a row. ie Buffalo Bills. All that matters is winning it. So, since 67’, aka when we both had the chance to win a cup, the wings have won 4, and the pens have won 3. Therefore, the wings have a better history since 67’ in terms of winning the cup. That wasn’t the argument of this article by that idiot Rob Rossi anyways. His argument was that the Wings were on a decline…and being in 11th in the West isn’t helping their case, granted it’s only 1/5 way through the season.
Posted by unemployed in the d from jim leylands crib on 11/04/09 at 11:19 AM ET
You guys must be proud of all your outstanding accomplishments up in Detroit. Cool the Red Wings are a good hockey team, you lost to the Penguins. The Lions? No comment on that franchise, and as for the Tigers? Yeah same deal. Watch what you say about a city named “City of Champions”. Yeah 1 out of 3 sports teams sucks in Pittsburgh, 2 of 3 major championships is better than 0 right Detroit? There is a reason more Pittsburgh fans span across the US than Detroit sports fans. Remember that. Crosby has the right to bitch about his stick being broken, it’s a penalty that is called 99% of the time in the league. Crosby sure showed his lack of leadership last night in sacrificing the body in the crease preventing a game tying goal against the Ducks. Find a new team to hate on, maybe a team full of goons like the Caps or Flyers. As far as comparing cities? Wow Detroit is the arm pit of America w/ it’s failing auto industry and economy, so let’s not go down this road. I think you Red Wing fans all cry more than you say Crosby does.
Posted by Unbias opinion from Austin TX on 11/04/09 at 12:25 PM ET
Your opinion seems a lot more full of bias than your name lets on, joke.
I love discounting every argument as unimportant when you choose to go down that road. Congrats to the Steelers for being among the most successful franchises in all of football. Really, I hold no ill will towards that bunch. I’m just saying that bringing football into a hockey discussion is silly. I mean, it’s not stupid, like comparing relative economic strength of each American city, but it is still silly.
The point we were trying to make is that the Red Wings have been considerably more successful than the Penguins over the last 18 years. If you’re going to bring economics into it, then the argument that the Wings have been much better than the Penguins over that time is going to be strengthened. If you want to be so short-sighted as to count only championships, that’s your prerogative, but you’re going to have a hard time finding intelligent people who agree with you.
There is a reason more Pittsburgh fans span across the US than Detroit sports fans.
Show me numbers or shut up. That’s a subjective claim that does not mesh with my own personal experiences. I usually blast on bandwagoners a lot less than my compatriates here because simply put, there’s a reason that a military brat from Kansas with absolutely no hockey upbringing came to be a Red Wings fan. Lots of fans have to jump on the bandwagon at some point. I think the fact that I’ve been here for fifteen years counts for something, but since the Wings have not been absolutely terrible at any point during that span, go ahead and say what you will about my true dedication to the team. We’ll find out when that eventual collapse happens, huh?
Crosby sure showed his lack of leadership last night in sacrificing the body in the crease preventing a game tying goal against the Ducks.
If all it took to be considered a leader was stopping pucks in the crease, then Roberto Luongo wouldn’t be the only goalie to wear the C for his team. It’s a good hockey play and one for which he should be commended, but that had nothing to do with leadership.
Find a new team to hate on, maybe a team full of goons like the Caps or Flyers.
Listen, I understand you’re new around here and possibly mildly retarded, but I feel I should let you in on a secret. We don’t spend all our days hating on the Penguins. We have plenty of hate for goon teams like the Ducks in our own conference. It’s hard to work up a bunch of hate for the Caps and Flyers when they’ve in the Eastern Conference and we hardly play them. Rest assured that my individual hatred for fans of Philadelphia sports franchises and Chris Pronger is more than enough for me to root against the Flyers in every game they play, but mostly, I give as much a shit about them as you probably do about the Blackhawks. The only reason many of you Penguins fans know the Red Wings exist enough to hate them and their fans is the last two years’ SCF. Don’t assume we don’t have our own in-conference hated rivals.

In all honesty, who cares if the Wings have been better than the Penguins since they joined the league. Pittsburgh is one championship away from being even with Detroit. Why judge either team by anything else other than how many Cups they have won? Detroit has 4 since the expansion. Pittsburgh has 3. The Sharks to me, aren’t a good team because they can’t handle the heat in the playoffs, having the best record in the league means nothing if you don’t back it up in the playoffs right? So the fact that the Red Wings have been more consistent than the Penguins, yeah that’s true, but they still only have one more Cup than Pittsburgh to show for it. Come on now. I live in Pittsburgh. I don’t hate Detroit. The past two Cup finals were exciting and it was even more exciting getting a re match. As far as Crosby goes, I’m not worried that he bitches on non calls. Most players do. Missing the faceoff was a little ridiculous on his part and the refs. It was awesome to see him in a fight though. Trying to gain momentum for a team isn’t a crime. I’m sure you’d feel the same if Lidstrom kicked someone’s ass when you were down? That’s my rant. I don’t get the hatred b/t Pens and Red Wing fans. I have a respect for Detroit. And I’m a Penguins fan. I wouldn’t care if we played you guys every year in the Finals. It’s obviously a great match up. Where’s the love?

Look I’m not here to troll or argue or do anything of that nature. I’m a hockey fan that can’t get enough of the game and bounces around from blog to blog. In reading this article, it’s clear that no one should take Rob Rossi seriously. He is a joke. Second of all, why do sports fans constantly have to argue about “dynasties” and “my team has more championships in the last 20 years than yours”?? Pride and history is great, but what I’m more worried about is the present. The Pittsburgh stinkin Pirates were relevant 20 years ago so that should show you how much the past pertains to the future. The only thing everyone needs to argue about is this current season.

In all honesty, who cares if the Wings have been better than the Penguins since they joined the league. Pittsburgh is one championship away from being even with Detroit.
Only in Penguins fans’ little fantasy world where stats don’t count before 1967. At any rate, it’s moot. We’ll talk “relative ties” if we ever actually get to that point.
Trying to gain momentum for a team isn’t a crime. I’m sure you’d feel the same if Lidstrom kicked someone’s ass when you were down?
Nick Lidstrom doesn’t fight. I’d be mad if he did. We need our captain on the ice, not defending himself in a murder trial.
having the best record in the league means nothing if you don’t back it up in the playoffs right?
Wrong. That must be why every team except the Stanley Cup Champion team gets a shot for the number one pick in the draft lottery, right? Call it luck, call it rigged lotteries, call it tanking for picks, but I put more stock in the fact that the Wings won the cup on the backs of excellent front office moves and developing the hell out of players that everybody else overlooked than finding the right coach to motivate a core of can’t-miss draft selections and having a general manager not dumb enough to listen to the fans’ cries that they needed to trade future Selke winner Jordan Staal.
Not a shot at Shero because he is a good general manager, but it would take Burkian stupidity to have the first or second overall pick four years running and not be able to turn that into a perennial contender. When you add the fact that the league is doing as much to drum up support for your team as your ownership is, yet again, you’ve got a recipe for success that it would take a real moron to mess up.
I feel like I shouldn’t even have to mention this at this point, but I"m so tired of hearing people trying to defeat an argument I’m not making, I feel it prudent to bring up that I’m not saying that there is some conspiracy to have made the Penguins the cup winners. Other Wings fans do say that, I’m not one of them.

i’m not impressed w/ teams that drive up salaries for marginal players w/ their spending in free agency i.e. detroit, n.y., philly.
Can you tell me which marginal players Detroit has overpaid for while the big market teams were screwing over your Penguins? Don’t lump us in with those assholes in New York, Philly, and Tampa Bay when talking about overspending for talent. Was it Derian Hatcher? Please let it be Derian Hatcher you’re talking about, the one shining example of a shitty contract given to a player that didn’t deserve it in Detroit. Were guys like Fedorov, Shanahan, Hull, Yzerman, Lidstrom, and Hasek overpaid? For that matter, were they marginal?
ok that’s fine and in those 18 yrs detroit has won 4 cups the pens 3
The 1990-91 cup was more than 18 years ago. I know that’s a technicality, but it’s worth pointing out that over the last 18 years, the score is 4-2 Detroit.
i say i’m more impressed w/ pittsburgh’s core because of their age and mental toughness
You must not be a follower of the great Buccigross. According to him, the age of the Penguins’ core players is a huge advantage for them. I’ll give them credit for “figuring out how to win” like they did. I definitely won’t deny that, but I still think it’s more impressive to get a winner out of a guy that was passed over 178 times than it is to get a winner ouf ot a guy who’s draft city was decided by a ping-pong ball.

Ummmm technicality my ass 11/4/91 to 11/4/09 is 18 yrs buddy sorry and on both of those dates the pens had the cup, thanks for coming out
They won that cup more than 18 years ago, therefore they have won only 2 cups in the last 18 years. Even with your busted math, you no longer have the cup once the next season starts. I thought you said you knew hockey?
Who said anything of advantage? Their age absolutely is an advantage, i said what impressed me was their age (young) and mental toughness. sorry i wasn’t more specific what was meant was their mental toughness for their young age.
Sorry, that shot was more at Buccigross than it was at you. I don’t have a problem with you being impressed with your own team.

It didn’t take a ton of foresight or nostradamus type abilty to sign established future hall of famers like hasek, hull, chelios and robitaille i’m sorry
Maybe not, but it took a hell of a lot of coaching and leadership to make the cup champions. Buy all the skill you want without making them work together and you end up with the pre-lockout Rangers, who missed the playoffs.

11-3 Detroit, unless you’re counting the last 18 years only, then it’s 4-2.
Also, there’s some beauty to you coming to a Wings blog after what happened last season and comparing records this early.

dude come on alot of coaching and leadership? Those guys weren’t loose cannons that needed guidance they were seasoned future hall of famers. It’s not like detroit signed chris simon, brian marchmant and sean avery and won the cup. The rangers are just an anomaly, no team w/ that much talent and money should not win a cup plain and simple, admit it messier sold his soul to the devil to make that prediction come true and now they’re paying for it, bang. done

If the Ranges are an anomaly, can you list all of the numerous teams who won a cup despite having a bad coach and crappy leadership?
Put and idiot behind the wheel of an F1 car and you get a car wreck. Better yet, put a bottom-of-the-barrel transmission in it and tell me how far it goes. It would almost be like the Penguins being on the verge of missing the playoffs at the trade deadline last year, despite having enough talent ...
Also, the fact that they signed the seasoned, character guys and not the overpriced divas deserves credit all its own.

I thought nobody over here liked comparing hockey to anything else? But whatev, what defines a bad coach or crappy leadership? Is it your personal opinion or an organization’s?
Nice jab, but it’s a good metaphor.
Since bad coaching and crappy leadership is obviously subjective, I’ll let you go with your own personal opinion. I’m just saying that the Rangers missing the playoffs for seven straight years despite having among the league’s highest payrolls is a bit more than anomalous.
How do you explain smaller market teams’ successes during that same era? You could obviously find a correlation between the bottom salaries and failure to achieve playoff success, but it gets fuzzier around the top.

Sidney Crosby is a very talented kid who still has some maturity issues (manifested most often as whining) that should go away as he grows up. He’s an extremely good player.
Alexander Ovechkin is a very talented kid who still has some maturity issues (manifested most often as unneeded hits, I suppose) that should go away as he grows up. He’s an extremely good player - and a force of nature as a goal-scoring talent, which Crosby will never be (although Crosby will most likely be a much better overall player). Ovechkin has enough offensive talent that he can get away with not playing as much defense because if he gives up a goal, he is more than capable of scoring two to make up for it. I find Ovechkin more fun to watch, but that’s a personal preference - and stylistic preference has nothing to do with someone’s hockey knowledge, unless someone is so narrow-minded and intellectually small that they can only comprehend one possible way of seeing things and everyone else must be wrong just because their universe is too limited to encompass any other viewpoint.
Besides, why should Ovechkin play more defense on that team than Mike Green does?
