Bartender, Statesman, Instigator…Voox

JJ from Kansas is gonna be in Toronto this weekend because he won the right to go.  Knowing him, he probably would have gone anyway.

Voox, from what the interns have discovered, lives there and pushes the 19’s agenda at every opportunity.  How?  Thank you for asking.  He just posted this comment a few minutes ago.  Great stuff.

“Keep an ear out for Let’s Go Red Wings chants, 19.  I can usually get them going particularly late in the first period and second period.  I am even going to try and get a “Stevie Yzerman”-clap-clap——clap-clap-clap cheer going.  That one may actually have Leafs fans joining in as Yzerman gets big time love in Toronto.  Local fans will even praise my Yzerman jersey and The Captain.

As the game progresses a couple of things will happen.  First, the Wings fans will get more vocal and join in the cheers as the opening period winds down.  By this point we will draw the ire of Leafs fans who will boo our chants or try a meager “Go Leafs Go” to shut us up.

After the first intermission, booze will be lubricating the crowd more.  The Wings chants will get louder, maybe even being heard on TV now, and the Leafs fans will get more pissed off and really start trying to out-chant us.  Listen for a crescendo on TV of “Go Leafs Go” chants throughout the second.

By the start of the third, the crowd will be fully lubricated.  The Leafs fans, having heard Red Wings chants all game in their barn, will be ornery.  As soon as I get a Wings chant started, my entire section will start drowning out our chants with Leafs chants.  This will spread arena-wide and you’ll hear ALOT of Leafs chants on TV as Leafs fans finally find their voices.  This may be the loudest the ACC will get all year, trust me.  I piss off the locals (in a good spirited way for both sides) that much.

There will be exceptions.  If the Wings build up a huge lead, I’ll lay off rubbing salt in the wound.  Same if the Leafs have a huge lead, Wings fans won’t join the chants.

I’ve started over 100 arena-wide chants through the years in Toronto.  Now it’s time to get an arena-wide Yzerman chant going.

Celebrate the Stevie, bitches.”

Thanks for the spotlight, Chief.

One day I’ll write “A Fan’s Guide to Starting Sports Chants”.  Over the years, I’ve developed quite a knack for when to time starting up a chant.  One of my proudest moments came at JLA, 2008 Game 1 vs. Nashville.

I had pneumonia.  And a few friends.

We were so loud, they threatened to kick us out 12 times in two periods.  The head of security of JLA cane to give us a “final warning to keep it down before we kick you out” speech during the second intermission.  He had to back down when our ENTIRE section was shouting to let us stay.  Even the old ladies.

When I watched the game on the PVR Mickey said it was the loudest he had heard JLA since 2002.  And we all know what happened in 2002 and 2008.  Every other game I was at that postseason was the loudest game that round.  And the “We Want the Cup” chants during Game 5 before 3O/T… we started as well, unfortunately.

NHL ‘10 video game fans in Detroit can thank me as well.  After badgering the developers on their forums, I had Kronwall’s name fixed last year.  After the NHL ‘09 demo was released with his name “Kronvall” (yet again) I called out EA for being amateurs.  By the release of the full game a month later, the name became “Kronwall”

Also, I criticised them last fall for their “Go Wings Go” chant they featured the last several of years.  I mocked them for not getting it correct with “Let’s Go Red Wings” or “Let’s Go Wings”.  One of their audio guys apologized for the error, and now the game has the proper “Let’s Go Red Wings” chant.

Most people wouldn’t get it.  But I am sure the 19 understand my frustration.  Hearing the wrong chants and Kronwall’s name butchered drove me nuts evertime I played the game.

Leafs are 0-4-2 at home this year.  Red Wings are 2-3-2 on the road.

How does that go?  A stoppable force meeting a moveable object?

monkey, the Leafs and their fans get up for this game.  Full lather.  The Leafs will play like Cup contenders against the Wings, and usually ONLY against the Wings.

Wings tickets are among the hardest tickets to get at the ACC every year.  Although the 19 don’t think much either way about the Leafs, I can assure you Leafs fans absolutely loathe the Red Wings.

Like elephants, Leafs fans have long memories. We have to, there has been little positive about the Leafs in 40 years.  And Leafs fans remember the Norris Division (the Central to Li’l Gary) as though it was only yesterday.

JJ got tickets for tomorrow’s Legends game from The Emperor, stonehands.  A scalper friend traded my two tickets for three tickets + cash to tonight’s game do JJ and his sister could join me.  But you are right, this is The Captain’s weekend and nothing could tarnish that.

For any A2Y or Kukla’s readers in the area (I emailed you, Mirtle), there will be post game fun and drinks at The Wheat Sheaf bar (at Bathurst & King).  You are welcome to join us. I’ll be in a red Yzerman sweater, JJ in a Dastyuk one.  My buddies may be wearing some Leafs gear.  Also look for a copious quantity of empty glasses in front of us.

Some poetry to open the “Celebrate the Stevie” Hall of Fame Drinking Game/Live Blog would be appropriate.

And the Leafs are my second team, Winger. Back in 1988 I got into hockey after avoiding it for a long time.  Getting the season tickets was the catalyst.  Live hockey (especially at Maple Leaf Gardens) is magical.

I was initially a Leafs fan, and looking for a favourite player to root for.  It would have been Wendel Clark, one of the greatest captains in history, I loved Clark.  As did EVERYONE in Toronto.  He had heart, guts, and talent.  A great team leader.

But there was one problem, by the late 80’s Clark was constantly injured and missed a lot of games.  I didn’t want to go crazy about Clark because nobody knew just how many games he had left in him.

And then I noticed Steve Yzerman, on our Norris division rivals.  He could score, skate, block shots, was a true leader and a gentleman.  And that was it.  I betrayed my hometown for ths kid scoring 60 goals a year. I found out a good friend at school also loved The Captain, and it was official.  I was an Yzerman fan.  Any team he played on would be my favourite.

Over the years, the Wings gave me more reasons to love them from the top down.  And now I’m a lifer.

If they want to win it will be Gustavsson.  Toskala should have nothing but a wardrobe of baseball caps until they can figure out a way to get him off the roster and a reliable backup to spell their Swedish rookie.

This team has driven me entirely around the bend with their road trip of crappiness.  The only way I could watch the games and avoid destroying anything was to keep my hands busy - and commenting wasn’t doing keeping them busy enough.

(Pause for the lovable reprobates to insert dirty jokes at my double entendre.)  smile

As a result, after the road trip I now have the most pointless thing ever - a baby afghan I crocheted in bright red and white, when I do not have (nor want) a baby, no one in my circle of family is pregnant right now, and it is in non-baby colors so I can’t just toss it in a pile of stuff for Goodwill or save for an emergency shower gift.  What can I do with that?!?  Maybe I can pass it off as a Christmas baby afghan - or maybe Bella would take it off my hands?  I suppose it served a purpose if it kept me from wreaking destruction on electronic devices until the team apparently decided to stop playing like crap for a while, so that’s good, anyway.

//sigh

Sometimes hockey makes me crazy.  Stupid sport.

Worth repeating:

Red Wings Scoring Maple Leafs
41 Total Goals 34
41 Opp. Goals 53
13 Power Play Goals 16

From CBC.ca:

The Red Wings won their third straight and fourth in five games (4-0-1) by beating San Jose 2-1 in a shootout Thursday. They’ve outscored opponents 7-2 during the winning streak, and are in position for their first four-game run since March 14-20.

Henrik Zetterberg is doing his part to pick up the scoring slack, getting a goal in each of the last two games and three in the last four. The center also had the deciding goal in the tiebreaker Thursday after scoring early in the third period to force overtime.

Another key contributor has been goaltender Chris Osgood, who has allowed only two goals on 84 shots to spur the winning streak.

The Maple Leafs (2-7-5) are looking to win consecutive games for the first time this season…

Booties and a hat would be a breeze - but the baby isn’t due until March, so wouldn’t get all that much use until next fall.  My house is a giant pile of stuff with a roof on it and I would lose something like that in the project clutter before long.

(I always told nosy old ladies who asked why I wasn’t married yet that it was because with my lack of household aptitude, the last thing I needed was a husband to make more of a mess than I could on my own - I need a personal assistant instead.)  LOL

Besides, I have too many projects I need to get done before Christmas as it is - the last thing I should be doing is busying my hands with anything non-essential for the next couple months.  I just couldn’t work on anything in non-Wings colors while I was watching the turnover-fests.
