Best “tag” Ever

July is the perfect time for this.  Hockey stories are slim.  News is relegated to the Darren Garcias of the world and all we can do is wait for September.  But, Phil Randolph has made my day.  He’s tagged me with one of those top five deals.  The topic, I think, is your five favorite songs.

Oh, I’ve got songs brother.  I’ve got opinions and I’ve got songs, opinions about songs, songs about my opinion of songs.

The A2Y top 5:

5.  Night Moves.  Bob Seger’s best and the anthem for every middle aged man who spent his formative, pathetically awkward teenage years in Michigan.

4.  Blinded By The Light.  Manfred Mann’s remake of the Springsteen tune.  Every time I listen to it I hear something better about that song.  It could very well be the greatest classic rock song of all time.  OF ALL TIME (Rocky reference).

3.  Tuesday’s Gone.  Skynyrd’s finest and a constant reminder that Ronnie Van Zant died way too young.  Speaking of which, if you ever get the chance (and you’re a Skynyrd fan), find the song “Brickyard Road” from Ronnie’s little brother, Johnny.  Great tribute.

2.  Little Guitars.  Diver Down, in my opinion, is Van Halen’s best effort.  Every song is great, but this one will always stand out for me.

1.  Overplayed, a cliche of a song, and I’m embarrassed that it’s in my top fifty much less my top ten.  But, “I Want You To Want Me” holds the top spot.  Cheap Trick is a horrible reminder of what can go wrong when a good rock band sells out.  But that didn’t happen until later.  Sentimental choice.  My wife would kill me if it wasn’t my publicly professed number 1.

Feel free to list your own top five below if you’d like, and here are the bloggers I’ll return the favor to:

I’m glad I was able to make your day with my ‘tag’.

I got some flack about my choices…but hey, I am what I am, and I like what I like!

Thanks for the nice plug!

Hey, I thought only us rednecks listened to Skynyrd. You finally copping to being part ‘neck there, Chief?

O.k., here goes.  Could change on a daily basis but here is how it is today…

5. “Roll Me Away” - Bob Seger reminds me of growing up in Michigan and wanting to get out and see the world.

4. “Master of Puppets”- Metallica

3. “Empty Garden” - Elton John, I still miss Lennon and this is a nice tribute to him.

2. “Closer to Fine” - Indigo Girls

1. “Running to Stand Still” - U2, closes off side 1 of “The Joshua Tree” (well back when there were LPs anyway) in such a haunting way.

Queen:  Skynyrd is my second favorite band of all time, behind only Van Halen.  And that one’s real close.  I didn’t marry kin, but I do have some ‘neck tendencies.

Chic:  Mine changes daily.  Carry On Wayward Son and about twenty different Crosby, Stills and Nash songs have all held the #2 spot at different times.

Well, Iwo, here are mine. You probably won’t be surprised by any of them:
1. It’s the End of the World as We Know It- R.E.M.
2. Eve of Destruction- Barry Maguire
3. License to Kill- Bob Dylan ** Great lyric in this one about man inventing his own doom.
4. Bad News is All the Wind can Carry- Richard Thompson
5. As the End Draws Near- Sarah Mclachlan

Hope all is well with you Chief!!

Hola Gang:  I was born and raised in Marine City, just N/E of Detroit, and attended lots of concerts at the Joe, and at Pine Knob.  My list will, no doubt, confirm my age as being closer to 50 than to 30.  Having spent my youth on the St. Clair River waterfront, and listening to Arthur P on WRIF—my list tilts decidely to those songs featuring screaming electric guitar (though my musical taste is pretty damn eclectic Bach to Boston, etc.).  Here is my top five, although the order is subject to change on any given day:

1.  Eruption/You Really Got Me - -  Van Halen (an absolutely amazing cover of the Kinks, with a whole lotta Eddie individual genius for the the world to hear);

2.  Roll With the Changes - - REO Speedwagon (classic/ feel good rock and roll with great solo action);

3.  Crazy Train - - Ozzy/Randy Roades (Randy is almost as good as Eddie - - almost.  This song just rocks);

4.  More Than a Feeling - - Boston (I know, way too mainstream, but Boston rocks, and this is lyrically close to my puppy dog heart, and calls me back to the beach and the first summer of Jeff);

5.  Get Off Of My Cloud - - Stones (Not alot of guitar, but a whole lotta fun).

Eclectic, without question, but lots of musical pleasure o my ears.

Great call on the Manfred Mann version of “Blinded by the Light”. One of my all time favorites.

(Sort of weird, agreeing with you about something, though.)

5. “Sweet Emotion”  pre-rehab Aerosmith
4. “Crazy Train” Ozzy
  psst, Okie, Rhoades was better than you know who,
  and he didn’t aspire to be a piano player like you
  know who. Note for note best air guitar song ever!
3.“I Am Trying To Break Your Heart” Wilco
  If you never heard it, pay a buck and download it,
  if you like sick, twisted relationship songs
2.“Layla” Derek and The Dominoes
  I’m certain I should have tired of this old warhorse by
  now, but I haven’t.
1. “Werewolves Of London” Warren Zevon
  Don’t ask me why a piano pop song sits on top of my
  list. It just makes me smile, and I never tire of
  singing along. Go ahead, try it. “AAAAAUUUUUUU,
  Werewolves of London, AAAAAUUUU.” Now it’s in
  your head all day!! Better than the Zamboni song,
  eh?

Jesus.  Stick to hockey, dudes.  We Detroiters haven’t been notable for our musical taste since Motown ended and the Stooges broke up.  This is pathetic, even for summer.

I’m with you on the Cheap Trick love.  That song NEVER gets old.  I always sing along to it when it comes on the radio.
