Breaking News: Hasek Is Brittle

Of all the ailments, it had to be a hip.  It had to be the malady most closely associated with the elderly.  My only question is did Dominik Hasek fall down and break his hip? Is that the irritation? Does he have a clapper now?  What the hell is “hip irritation”?

Here we go.  Fire up the train boys and girls because the long season of uncertainty begins tonite with young Jimmy backing up your once and current favorite whipping boy (well…second favorite) Chris Osgood. The bunnies are in a fervor, while the rest of us fall back into a routine we’re all too comfortable with.

That’s right kids, after one year of calm, we return to your regularly scheduled programming.  It’s the Detroit Red Wing Traditional Crease Clusterfu*& (DRWTCCF).

Khan(!)

“It’s nothing major,’’ Wings general manager Ken Holland said of Hasek’s ailment. “But, it’s early in the season. It’s bothering him enough that we’re hoping with a few days off it’ll go away.’‘

Yes.  Us too.  We’re hoping it just “goes away”.  Because, and I’m only 38 so I don’t have hip problems yet, I guess that’s what they do.  They just…go away.  Whew.

Meanwhile, back at the CF, Jimmy Howard is exactly where we expected him to be for exactly the reason we knew he’d be there.  There was exactly zero chance we could have expected two consecutive painless seasons with Hasek.  We’re only ten games in and we’ve already seen two different injuries, a knee and now “hip irritation.”

Kulfan

“This early in the season, we’ll give him a few days off here and hopefully the rest will help. We don’t think this is anything major. Dom says it just doesn’t feel right.”

Newsflash: at 43, I’d bet more than a few things don’t “feel right.”  Hip irritation, hmmm.  Hip irritation.  I’m…nah, I’m not buying it.  Hip bone’s connected to the groin bone as far as I’m concerned.  And if it’s the groin bone then you know where this leads.  Yep, the charley foxtrot, the annual DRWTCCF.

But all is well. All is well. Osgood’s played better than Hasek in the early going.  He’s looked sharp.  He frolics and the girls love him. We’re happy because that’s why we have him, the best backup in the league.  And up comes Jimmy on his big old steed (Tenacious D reference), fresh from GR, to join his pal Igor who might want to take a shot in net because he definitely can’t put one IN the net.  Another subject.

How soon before we see Howard?  Saturday against Vancouver?  Sure.

All for nought?  Perhaps.  Hasek may be back next week since it’s only a “hip irritation” and we just want it to “go away” and it just may because it just doesn’t “feel right.”  Good to know.  Good to know.

Not me. I see it coming, sense something brewing, see it on the horizon and I’m starting to recognize the signs: an old fashioned Detroit goalie controversy.  Because, you know, nobody throws a goalie controversy like a Deetroit goalie controversy.  Buckle up.

Goalies do suffer from hip problems on occasion, whether it’s simply a sore hip or something more, I can’t say, but this is pretty common with butterfly goaltenders.  You can hyperextend a hip flexor or a hamstring dropping into the butterfly, kicking out a leg, and the repetitive motion can leave you feeling a bit sore.  I think the Wings did a nice job of shutting Dom down to give him preventative medicine so that this doesn’t get worse and turn into a bigger problem.

My wife, a native Oklahoman (and not a die-hard Sooner fan) doesn’t quite understand my obsession with Red Wing hockey.  So, being the brilliant communicator that I am, I made a metaphor I thought she would grasp.  For me the Wings are “male drama” to the nth degree—akin to her favorite “female drama” (insert here any “chick-flick” or tv show (Friends, Sienfeld, Frasier, etc.)

But with the news of Hasek beginning to swirl, and the Igor fiasco—I am getting ready to tell her the Wings are a freaking daytime soap-opera.

Days of my Hip,
Hasek Hospital,
Iggy’s Guiding Light—or maybe for him “Fat Camp”—

Good Grief!!!

The team is playing really well—so the Hockey Gods have seen fit to throw in a bunch of distraction.  How freaking typical, and haven’t we all seen this drama play out before (at least the Hasek part)!!!  Fortunately OZZY has been playing well this season.  Lets hope/pray and make sacrifice that Dom isn’t on the shelf too damn long.

For Iggy—crap, I don’t know.  Put him on a few shifts with Pavel (only when the Wings are up 3 goals) and see just what the kid can do.  If he looks like he is moving with cement skates, put him on the next Aeroflot out of town, and remind him just how wonderful the Super League is!!!

Not surprising at all, but honestly not that worrisome in my mind. I like George’s take on this one.

I’m not so naive to think that any injury to Hasek is “no big deal”, but I think that’s exactly why he’s not playing for a few games—because the team isn’t that naive and they want to hedge their bets.

I hope you watch for the hockey, not the drama.  That would be so like a girl!  smile

If that’s the case Baroque, then what’s your excuse?

Me, I watch ‘em because of the hockey, I put up with the drama.  At least this isn’t Dominator II—the fiasco with Cujo and The Mouth—now THAT was drama.

I don’t think I have ever heard Dom Hasek called a “butterfly goaltender”.

I watch for the hockey and ignore the drama.

Besides, it’s been many, many years since I was a girl.  I’m just about old enough to be a rookie’s parent (not on the Wings, though—but on Chicago, workable).  My personal rule is you are no longer a kid if you have a winter coat old enough to be a high school graduate!  smile

So Hasek’s hip is sore???  Wow, is my face red on this one.  I thought “hip irritation” meant that he was PO’ed…  in a, you know, really cool and with it sort of way.

Gawd Baroque, I think you’re my new hero—watch for the game, ignore the drama.  Sometimes I wish I could be a neutral observer, but it really doesn’t work like that with your hometown teams, now does it?
