Bucci? We’re Not Done With You Just Yet

The last time I saw John Buccigross on television I think he had a perm. That, in itself, is pathetic. Men don’t get perms and they don’t use exclamation points. In his defense, I don’t believe John Buccigross uses exclamation points in his columns for ESPN.
But there are other issues. One big one that I’m not ready to let go of. Not yet, mainly because this Buccigross thing? It’s the MSM’s view of Detroit in a nutshell so far this year.
We’ve focused on the “past their prime” thing. We’re on it and we’ll be on it all year. It will continue to be a rallying cry whenever Zetterberg puts up five points or Datsyuk makes a game his own, and especially when Zetterberg leads his team to another gold medal in Don Cherry’s backyard this February. Yeah. I went there.
But there are other elements to Buccigross’ idiocy. Other aspects of his response on 22 October that deserve your scorn.

After 18 games, the Wings sit 4th in goals scored. Ok. For now. Bucci?
The Red Wings will struggle to score goals and that is a problem because they are not constructed to prevent them.
19, a nice round number, goals their last three games. Averaging 4 goals per game their last 9 games.
They continue to live off their power players and struggle with their penalty killing and goaltending.
Over those last nine games? 27 even strength goals. And over those nine games? 7 wins and five games with 1 goal or less allowed.
This is my favorite, because John Buccigross is so qualified to make this claim.
Younger players are more energetic, more durable, heal quicker and, most important, have heightened mental clarity because younger people think only of the present, which is the key to creativity and productivity.
Pavel Datsyuk and Hank Zetterberg, according to John Buccigross, don’t have the “mental clarity” of their younger peers. Got it. So when some of the younger stars of the league are losing their minds, crying over officiating, punching people in the nuts, instigating in Stanley Cup Finals games, slew footing, refusing to back check, refusing to leave the ice during a power play and allowing 9 goals against even when you’re the brightest goaltending star to hit the NHL in decades? I guess when that’s all going on their mental acumen is sharp, sharp, sharp.
And that’s the key to “creativity and productivity”. Two attributes that just don’t go hand in hand with Datsyuk (the most creative player in hockey) or Zetterberg (on pace for an even 100 points).
I don’t like to belabor things here. That’s not how we roll. We simply don’t like to ping on one thing over and over and over again until it becomes so redundant that you want to close your eyes and swallow something poisonous. But this is the exception. Buccigross, perm and all, gave us something that just keeps revealing new tidbits of glory.
And you can thank Kate. It was her comment in this post that got me going today. Blame her, not me.

Maybe there should be a takeaway event in the next all star game. Give Pavel the puck and see how long it takes each player to get it away from him. It would be like a hockey bull riding event which of course would fit perfectly on the Network that Gary Built.

I would pay to see that - professional hockey players reduced to the equivalent of Trevor Thompson against Pavel. ![]()
And I don’t get anyone’s pop culture references because I don’t watch the OC, or Top Gear, or any of those other television shows. So it has nothing to do with age (but I’m 39, so clearly well past my own prime - as I have been informed that after 25 women just go downhill).

“Mental acuity of the young,” my ass. Complete and utter stupidity is unbounded by any barriers of age.
They also didn’t think it was “fair” that some of the wrong answers were the end results of very common calculation errors, because the wrong answers should be more obvious than that.

Some of the things college students, especially freshmen, say is just incredible. You can also see the effects of text speak in their papers. I’ve gotten plenty of emoticons, “lol”, “u” “ur” etc..

And the tension around the team was real tight.
What was behind the scenes, factually, totally, we may never know. The story is part of the “Stevie Y. legend” - the fact that he stayed / was allowed to stay and went on to be THE Captain with all the acheivements for the Red Wings is part - a big part - of why he is the hero / favorite player for many of all ages.

Now, I wonder if anyone emailed Bucci and actually straight up called him out on not admitting he’s wrong. That email from the Wings fan just lightly asking him about it isn’t good enough. While TG is good for entertainment, I actually prefer Fifth Gear for actual car information.

Top Gear is much much better. Are there hockey sites that have more hockey knowledge than KK or A2Y? Yup. But KK and A2Y are better than those sites just like Top Gear is better than 5th wheel.
Top Gear’s foray into the Southern States is the most hilarious piece of TV, except for maybe the daily show.

I remember it well, that is the first time I ever heard of a conspiracy to change Yzerman’s game.
Bill Bonds had a long exclusive interview with Mike Ilitch in prime time. He asked Ilitch straight up
about rumors of Stevie to OTT. Mr Ilitch said Hockey was a business, Stevie had always been paid well in Detroit, but he had no qualms whatsoever about trading him.
The fans reaction was awesome. The RW Org, never responded to questions about season ticket holders threatening to cancel .... Next home game, the fans booed Bowman during the introductions, and gave Stevie a 10 minute standing ovation.
Shortly after that the RW announced Stevie had been signed to a lifetime no-trade contract.

Ain’t buyin’ the flu thing. I said last week this was all part of a grand master plan by Our Uncle.
It does seem like it could be suspicious except for this: If they’re faking it, who are they trying to fool? If Ozzie was skating Sunday and now he’s definitely out, who does that hep? They could easily come out and say “We want to see what Howard’s made of, so we’re giving him a few starts” instead of this. Nevermind that they’re jerking Larsson around, calling him up, sending him down, calling him up, sending him down then maybe calling him up for the next game too. If they’re pretending he’s got the flu, then they only people they’re apparently trying to fool are the media and the fans, because you know that every single guy in that locker room knows exactly what’s going on.
It’s like someone said on one of the TV panels last year in the playoffs, word gets around. Most players know who’s hurt on the other teams and know what the injuries are. Maybe not all of them or how serious, but they know. You can bet that the Red Wings all know what’s wrong with Ozzie, and EVERYONE knows that this is Howard’s make or break year, so why try to fool just the media or the fans by saying that Ozzie is sick if he’s not?

Maybe he does just have the flu, but with complications - like a sinus thing that is affecting his balance, or nasty chest congestion that is limiting his breathing, or something.
If his brain is still fuzzy around the edges (that is the last thing to clear up when I am sick - the fuzzy head and the achiness that just makes me want to soak in a hot bath for hours) then he might not be able to focus enough to play effectively. It isn’t as though he can miss a shift now and then if he isn’t 100%.

I understand that, I just don’t buy it this time. Seems way too conspiratorial and pointless. I mean, if Osgood’s injured but he’s still playing, I understand lying about the injury, but this is the team that came out publicly and told us that they were shutting down Osgood for 10 days for some mental health recharge or whatever, so why be coy now? And again, why jerk around Larsson by having him up, down, up, down, travelling daily back and forth between Detroit and the Rapids? How many starts has this forced one of their top prospects to miss by putting him through all that travel? Hell, he must’ve missed a bunch of practices, travelling so much. That can’t be beneficial to him, and considering that he has as much a chance as anyone to be the new backup should something happen to Ozzie or Howie, why would they want to do that to him?
Posted by Garth on 11/16/09 at 09:24 PM ET
