Bucci? We’re Not Done With You Just Yet

The last time I saw John Buccigross on television I think he had a perm. That, in itself, is pathetic. Men don’t get perms and they don’t use exclamation points. In his defense, I don’t believe John Buccigross uses exclamation points in his columns for ESPN.
But there are other issues. One big one that I’m not ready to let go of. Not yet, mainly because this Buccigross thing? It’s the MSM’s view of Detroit in a nutshell so far this year.
We’ve focused on the “past their prime” thing. We’re on it and we’ll be on it all year. It will continue to be a rallying cry whenever Zetterberg puts up five points or Datsyuk makes a game his own, and especially when Zetterberg leads his team to another gold medal in Don Cherry’s backyard this February. Yeah. I went there.
But there are other elements to Buccigross’ idiocy. Other aspects of his response on 22 October that deserve your scorn.

After 18 games, the Wings sit 4th in goals scored. Ok. For now. Bucci?
The Red Wings will struggle to score goals and that is a problem because they are not constructed to prevent them.
19, a nice round number, goals their last three games. Averaging 4 goals per game their last 9 games.
They continue to live off their power players and struggle with their penalty killing and goaltending.
Over those last nine games? 27 even strength goals. And over those nine games? 7 wins and five games with 1 goal or less allowed.
This is my favorite, because John Buccigross is so qualified to make this claim.
Younger players are more energetic, more durable, heal quicker and, most important, have heightened mental clarity because younger people think only of the present, which is the key to creativity and productivity.
Pavel Datsyuk and Hank Zetterberg, according to John Buccigross, don’t have the “mental clarity” of their younger peers. Got it. So when some of the younger stars of the league are losing their minds, crying over officiating, punching people in the nuts, instigating in Stanley Cup Finals games, slew footing, refusing to back check, refusing to leave the ice during a power play and allowing 9 goals against even when you’re the brightest goaltending star to hit the NHL in decades? I guess when that’s all going on their mental acumen is sharp, sharp, sharp.
And that’s the key to “creativity and productivity”. Two attributes that just don’t go hand in hand with Datsyuk (the most creative player in hockey) or Zetterberg (on pace for an even 100 points).
I don’t like to belabor things here. That’s not how we roll. We simply don’t like to ping on one thing over and over and over again until it becomes so redundant that you want to close your eyes and swallow something poisonous. But this is the exception. Buccigross, perm and all, gave us something that just keeps revealing new tidbits of glory.
And you can thank Kate. It was her comment in this post that got me going today. Blame her, not me.

Ok, VooX, I also think you (and most of the 19, apparently) are dead wrong. Lets agree in disagree.
Just extending a little bit, I do think his references are cool. He writes basically the way we write, but on MSM. He is a Boston blatant homer and doesn’t hide it, and I think his columns are much better with the references than it would be without them (like his NBA season preview, using his favorite quotes from Almost Famous).

That’s fair. I don’t want everyone to agree with me, nor the Chief, all the time as that would make discussion boring. Just ask Pen(i)sblog who will ban people for talking about hockey in a way they don’t agree with.
Now, without further delay, I’m off to watch Top Gear.

younger players….have heightened mental clarity
Exactly why Brett Favre was over the hill 5 years ago, according to some Green Bay Packers’ management, ‘cept he’s still picking up receivers through the eye of a needle that no one else sees. In fact many many QBs in the NFL survived and prospered ONLY because of the clarity that their experience gave them.
And to my comment some weeks ago that Zetterberg may never be 100% again, this was, and remains, fully based on a comment to a friend of mine over dinner made by someone who trolls back and forth behind the Red Wings bench, normally wearing a blue shirt and tie and goes by the name of Mike. His comment was that Zetterberg’s back bothers him every day and may never be 100%. So I consider that pretty reliable.
The fact he appears to have gotten over the groin problem of earlier this season and rose to game playing condition after a couple of weeks is testament to the player he is and innate tenacity with which he plays (somehow I think I should be ending that in a preposition but can’t use an exclamation point).

Not related…
The Blackhawks “Division leading” record is waaayyy skewed.
Of 19 games played, 13 have been at home.
In the 6 road games they have a losing record, 2-3-1 (5/12 pts). If they don’t play better on the road then as their schedule evens out they will start dropping points left and right and leave room for others in the Division to close or pass them. They have to make up 7 road games.

Point…. my bad.
Can anyone here honestly say that you have ever, in your natural life, seen a player like Pavel Datsyuk?
Posted by Kate from Pa. on 11/16/09 at 11:56 AM ET
No, I really can’t. There have been magnificent puck-handlers in past eras, but they’d have gotten eaten alive in this era of hockey. And yet somehow, Datsyuk thrives.
I’m probably the only person who likes his columns more for what he knows (he really knows his shit about basketball) as opposed to the pop culture stuff. I don’t even know what he’s referring to half the time because I’m a dude and I never watched “The O.C.”

I’ve liked Bill Simmons for a long time. If you can ignore the fact that he likes an awful league in an awful sport (NBA) and the fact that he watches absolute garbage for TV shows he still is a very good writer. He “gets it”. He basically invented so many aspects of column-writing and blogging that everyone does nowadays that we take it for granted (things like real-time blogging the NBA drafts for columns).
That said, he took a big nosedive once the Pats and Sawx started winning, and it’s taken him years to get his writing mojo back because of it. He at least recognizes it and has admitted so on many occasions…

Continuing the Simmons stuff: have you guys seen last Friday’s column?
He admits respecting Peyton Manning (clutch), Alex Rodriguez (October) and Kobe Bryant (Shaq-less title). Now I’m affraid Rosby gets a brain surgery to become a real leader.
And one more thing: you guys can’t really say pop culture and sports don’t match at all. Maybe Buccigross and Simmons exagerate, but we too have those things (music on the LBs, Buckets, Tell, Taz and some other stuff).

-1 Completely disagree. DudSpin and Buttigross are over-rated, self-absorbed, smug piles of crap.
We don’t have no stinkin’ pop culture here. Pop culture has always meant what is hot now. Our esteemed leader themes the LBs to music that is over 30 years old (in case you failed math, that’s older than most of the 19). One of our leading female contributors uses as a screen name a form of music that was “pop” over four hundred years ago.
Whenever these threads devolve into movie reference contests, its usually ranges from Airplaine (1979) to the Big Lebowski (1998). 1998? Damn, that’s almost new, it’s only 11 years old.
And what about the thread this week that went off on a tangent to literature. Literature? Does any self-absorbed pop culture site even know what literature is anymore? Could anyone from dudspit even name the title to a book? (The bible, comic books and graphic novels don’t count.)

I could be wrong - I usually am - but I’m guessing the fact that we’re talking about how idiotic Buccigross is is the exact reason why he wrote something that stupid. I’ve got to imagine that he’s not THAT dumb. After all, I haven’t heard anything about him writing for the Pensblog.
I’m guessing the guy looked at the largest American fan base in the NHL and figured if he ruffled those feathers they’d all know the name Buccigross. He grossly exaggerated a point and is hanging on to it because it gets us all pissed off and calling him an idiot. Seems kind of effective.
That being said - if his goal was to say something so stupid that it is basically universally rebuked, well… he succeeded.

Speaking of Steve Winwood and pop culture references, any mention of Winwood immediately reverts me to the greatest show on TV - Always Sunny.

We don’t have no stinkin’ pop culture here. Pop culture has always meant what is hot now.
I guess I’ve never taken ‘pop culture’ to distinctively mean what is current, but rather a set of loosely connected ideas from any one realm, regardless of when that may be. Simmons actually rarely refers to present-day stuff when you compare it to how often he cites 80’s-themed stuff for his material (I guess I did him a disservice then by mentioning The OC ...) “Pop” to me just means whatever is popular among a group, or a group of things that are popular. I suppose what many of my professors preach must actually mean something: everything is about definitions.
Our esteemed leader themes the LBs to music that is over 30 years old (in case you failed math, that’s older than most of the 19)
Hey I enjoy that stuff too man, music’s good whenever it was made. I try to take pride in appreciating older stuff. I may be 23, but I’m an old 23 that ignorantly resists change and an over-infiltration of technology into my life. In fact I’m typing this from my porch and throwing rocks at the whipper snappers running across my lawn.

I apologize for this being off-topic, but…
I saw a Yankee-blue and white Red Wings baseball cap today on campus - winged wheel and all (I stared at it for a good 15 seconds, because it just seemed so odd, and when I walked past him I looked @ the back as well…and the NHL logo was there). My reaction was, “That’s just not right.”
I know when I think Red Wings, I think red and white. I was wondering what the 19’s thoughts on this would be.

This is true and operates on the idea that “there is no such thing as bad publicity.” And maybe that’s true when you’re being out done by a slew of bloggers who are much more interesting than you.
Sucks though; I wish people would just do the extra work needed to say something insightful rather than dumb shite that will get a bunch of attention. Or, even forget insightful and just do sincere. Or piss people off as a project because they were classless enough to make fun of families losing their livelihood and their homes. I’m good with any of those options.

Normally I can’t stand the arbitrary changing of team colors on hats and clothes. (Best example: MSU t-shirts that I see on campus in all different colors. Makes no sense. Why would you want to wear an all red MSU shirt. Go to *#$%@& Ohio.)

Marketing nonsense. The Yankees hat has become a staple in any “hip” wardrobe, therefore increasing its already “hughely douchey” status. People are tying to cop the style with a different logo.
The store at the Joe’s box office has Wings hats in all sorts of colors and styles, including “vintage” with holes and tears.

I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing, JJ. I’ve seen millions of different color of Yankee hats. Those, however, just have the NY on them. Though that is the Yankee logo, I think it’s been adopted by New Yorkers as almost the city logo as well. But the winged wheel in colors other than red and white? That just seems…blasphemous.
It didn’t even sink in that it was a Red Wings hat until I saw the NHL logo on the back. I thought, maybe, it was the logo of some high school or something. Hoped that’s what it was, actually.

I don’t think Yzerman is infallible. He is human, like us, despite how we think of him as a diety. I had a chance to meet him at my first job. I made a gushing fool of myself and was a bit ashamed of myself afterward (it’s not as bad as I make it sound, but still funny as hell).
I decided to never get excited over meeting a famous person again unless they had truly done something amazing for the world.
I was very sad this year when Norman Borlaug died. I would have been a stammering mess if I had ever met that man. I am that much in awe of him.
Alas, I did not mention his passing here, although I meant to. In the midst all of the celebrity deaths this year that made headlines, he was the biggest celebrity to me. And few even knew who he was or that he had passed.
RIP Norman Borlaug.

Norman Borlaug quotes:
“Without food, man can live at most but a few weeks; without it, all other components of social justice are meaningless.”
“You can’t build a peaceful world on empty stomachs and human misery.”
“It is a sad fact that on this earth at this late date there are still two worlds, “the privileged world” and “the forgotten world”. The privileged world consists of the affluent, developed nations, comprising twenty-five to thirty percent of the world population, in which most of the people live in a luxury never before experienced by man outside the Garden of Eden. The forgotten world is made up primarily of the developing nations, where most of the people, comprising more than fifty percent of the total world population, live in poverty, with hunger as a constant companion and fear of famine a continual menace.”

“Some credit him with saving more human lives than any other person in history.”

Khan(!) Khan, I’m laughing at the “superior intellect.” says Jimmah’s going to be in net again Wed when Dallas rolls in:
Jimmy Howard will make his fourth straight start in goal Wednesday at home against Dallas because Chris Osgood hasn’t recovered from the flu. Osgood wasn’t able to practice on Monday, a day after he skated with goaltending coach Jim Bedard and Kirk Maltby during the team’s day off Sunday. . .
Babcock said his plan is to start Osgood Friday at home against Florida and then go back to Howard for Saturday’s game in Montreal.
The lines remain the same:
Bertuzzi-Datsyuk-Holmstrom
Leino-Zetterberg-Cleary
Draper-Helm-Eaves
May-Abdelkader-(Maltby and Miller rotating)Lidstrom-Rafalski
Kronwall-Stuart
Ericsson-Lebda
Meech-LiljaHoward (starting)

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
