Buccigross: Put Uncle Mike At The Helm

We tend to pick on Mike Babcock here a bit more than we give him credit for the Wings’ success.  A bit more?  A lot more.  But, that doesn’t mean we don’t respect the way he’s put this team together and molded it to fit his style.  John Buccigross agrees, and recommends a world-wide stage.

So far this season, the Detroit Red Wings are the best team. They are by far the best-coached club. Mike Babcock is hands down the best coach in the NHL. He has to be Canada’s coach at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, and Steve Yzerman should pick the team. Synergy, people.

The Rangers won the game 1-0 in overtime on a wicked slap shot from the slot by Brendan Shanahan. After the game, the Rangers’ players gathered at center ice and raised their sticks to salute their fans. Salute their fans! This is a ritual seen throughout European hockey and soccer (including even the minor leagues) that is woefully absent in American sports. The practice is notably absent in the NHL, where so many of the players are European and must be familiar with the practice. I was so pleased to finally see NHL players recognize their fans and I hope other clubs follow the Rangers’ example and begin their own traditions of saluting their fans, who are so critical to the continued growth and success of the NHL.

Gee, I seem to remember making this very point here about how the Red Wings ignore the fans…

There is simply no better NHL broadcasting tandem than Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond.

Yes. We are great at everything we do. That’s how we roll. Cup please.

Paul; I was just about to quote that as well but decided that one quote is enough. I would love to see the Wings take this practice on. Hell, we’re halfway to being a European team already.

In case Bucci didn’t notice, the Rangers have been doing that since the lockout has been over….

That quote actually came from a fan email, not Bucci.

And yet Bucci still thinks the Red Wings need more grit because they aren’t tough enough to make it in the playoffs.  They did okay last post-season, I thought.

Sure did.  Grit wasn’t what happened.  Attrition happened and they lost in one helluva series against a great team that eventually won the Cup.

I get tired of this “the Wings have no grit” crap.  It’s a lame cop-out that hockey analyst lightweights use when they don’t really have any intelligent analysis to offer.
