The loss? Oh it was bad. The Wings? Yep, they looked like garbage. The level of embarrassment? Pretty frigging high, considering the hockey royalty in attendance and the huge viewing audience.
But, on a grand scale...the loss, and the manner in which it was dished out, wasn’t a huge deal. As new A2Y Gamewrecker, Voox, pointed out...the Wings are just not meant to win at the ACC.
If last night had come in the midst of October’s tailspin? I’d be fetal, considering the opponent. But it stopped a three-game winning streak and it interrupted some good Detroit hockey. A brand of hockey I expect to see return Wednesday when one of the little brothers is on tap for an open-handed slap to the face.
So don’t get all twisted and sick because of one game on a Saturday night (does that ring some sort of sick bell in your head? Was it last year that the Wings couldn’t win on Saturday? Blowouts to Bubba and the BJs I think?).
What you need to focus your nausea on is the fact that this team can’t stay healthy, and that’s a fact.
It’s not going to be goaltending, coaching, assistant coaching, hangovers, officiating, Gary’s continuing agenda or an improved division that poses the greatest threat to the Wings. It’s now health and it’s looking bleak.
The chatter is that Tick Tock’s gonna call up somebody from GR. Malik says it’s gonna be Tardiff, Williams or Newbury.
Me? I’m surprised we didn’t see shots of Ken Holland with a cell phone in each ear within minutes of Willie’s collision with the end boards. In other words, I think a deal will be made. That could mean a trade or a free agent signing. But, and the pharmacists among you can go ahead and correct me or expand on this, I have to think that with all the wounded flesh on the sidelines Tick Tock should have a little room to maneuver.
And that’s what he has to do. Because Jamie Tardiff’s not gonna cut it. Kris Newbury won’t either. Even a guy named “Hat Trick Dick” doesn’t have what we need right now and that’s offense. Instant and consistent. Not hopeful and surprising. Oh, I know. You can’t milk a stone. Well, bitch, maybe you can’t. But Kenny has and Kenny can.
Of course there’s a name out there and it’s sure to come up again. It’s been 28 days since I wrote this…
He’s not coming back. Not for free, not for twenty bucks, or a million or a six pack of Busch. It’s not happening.
Brendan Shanahan will never play for the Red Wings again.
That was before a wrist and an ankle and the easy talk of Tardiff and Newbury. It might be time to start thinking about bringing back a vet who knows how to score. No matter how impossible that prospect used to be. Circumstances have a way of softening grudges. It might be time to cue up the Irish Jig again.

I was appalled at our effort, but not suicidal. We played good hockey before that, and the only downside is that I worry about Ozzie’s focus (as always) and now injuries. I’m really shocked you took the high road and didn’t say anything bad about Jason Williams’ injury, Chief. Really, I am. Like, we lose a canon of a one-timer but gain some blue-line keeps on the PP.
Oh these injuries are killing me… I can’t imagine a goaltender going out, or Nicky or Z or Pav again. And bog knows Homer and Kroner are cheating death everytime they make it through a complete game.

I wouldn’t mind Nylander for this season. Even at ~$2.5M picking him up on re-call waivers I think we’ve got room for now. Problem is, he’s got next year on his contract too, and there’s no way in hell we can handle a $4.9M contract for a guy like that next season.
Rumor has it the Canes are about ready to start selling pieces. Who wants Brindamour for 2 more years at $3.6 on the cap?

I can’t tell if I’m joking or not.

I have to think that with all the wounded flesh on the sidelines Tick Tock should have a little room to maneuver.
From NHLnumbers.com:
Cap Numbers:
Mule - 3.955
Wally - 3.0
Willy - 1.5
Lilja - 1.25
How much LTIR cap space freed up is beyond me, I think it is a pro-rated average of time missed by the player.
However, I do not think any replacement player salary can exceed the salary of any “singular” player on LTIR. I.E. no yearly salary greater than Mule = no Nylander (why would Tick Tock would want him in the 1st place)?
Friggin lawyers must have written the following:
ii) The Player Salary and Bonuses of the Player that has been deemed unfit-to-play shall continue to be counted toward the Club’s Averaged Club Salary as well as count against the Players’ Share during the League Year in which the Player is deemed unfit-toplay (including during the period such unfit-to-play Player is on a Bona Fide Long-Term Injury/Illness Exception Conditioning Loan to another league);
(iii) The total replacement Player Salary and Bonuses for a Player or Players that have replaced an unfit-to-play Player may not in the aggregate exceed the amount of the Player Salary and Bonuses of the unfit-to-play Player who the Club is replacing;
(iv) The replacement Player Salary and Bonuses for any Player(s) that replace(s) an unfit-to-play Player may be added to the Club’s Averaged Club Salary until such time as the Club’s Averaged Club Salary reaches the Upper Limit. A Club may then exceed the Upper Limit due to the addition of replacement Player Salary and Bonuses of Players who have replaced an unfit-to-play Player, provided, however, that when the unfit-to-play Player is once again fit to play (including any period such Player is on a Bona Fide Long-Term Injury/Illness Exception Conditioning Loan to another league), the Club shall be required to once again reduce its Averaged Club Salary to a level at or below the Upper Limit prior to the Player being able to rejoin the Club;

need to focuse your nausea on that, that this team cant win when they ABSOLUTELY MUST, like game 7 of SCF,opening the season in SWEDEN with your capt. THE SWEDE and his countrymen bringing the best team in the world to their homeland,or having THE CAPTAIN inducted in HHOF
those are ABSOLUTELY MUST WIN games, its dishonorable to fail your fans, countrymen and former teammates
I dont care if there are new or young players or for the injuries,
maybe babcock cant do it anymore, you know that head games get old fast,
if this team doesnt get its will to win back, and starts playing its heart out, there will be an early playoff exit this year

Maybe we all have to face the fact that this is a “transitional” year and we’re going to have to play the cards we’re dealt. No shame in that. If some serious suckage this season means the Wings will be better in the long run then bring it on. I won’t like it, oh hell no I won’t like it, but I’ll live through it and hope for the best. Remember, this isn’t “fantasy hockey” where everybody and his dog are GM’s ( by the way the dog leads the league by 3 games) and trades are made on an hourly basis. Keep the faith.

Don’t entirely agree with you there, on the must win issue. Okay, Game 7 is a MUST WIN, I’ll give you that. But usually when there’s an emotional distraction in the regular season our guys handle that and piss away the game. We’re used to it. Banner being raised last year against Toronto was the same thing.
And more on injuries:
For a new look at the Red Wings’ roster (sans Mule/Val/Dr. Horrible) I recommend checking out the lineup posted on The Triple Deke. Nice touch, Tyler.
I know you’re a man of lists, so I think we should have an All-Injured 2009-10 NHL team. Kovalchuk, Mule, Luongo (is he injured yet?) and so on.
Posted by Sullyosis from A hateful lair in Post Apocalyptic US (or Arizona) on 11/08/09 at 01:32 PM ET
Oh, and by the way,
McClean = needs to go back to coaching the “D” and the PK - - NOW. He did exceptionally well at it in 07-08.
Brad McCrimmon = needs to be immediately reassigned, or worse.
Any coach that knows how to run forwards and PP needs to be immediately retained. Wings cannot score, and their PP is suffering the whiskey dick (granted alot of that has to do with who is on the ice 5-5).
BUT for fuchs sake, when the Circus is out on the PP with TPH and Raffi, they should be way better than 20%.
This really baffles me (surprising, I know). One of the Wings greatest competitive advantages lies in Mr. I’s wallet. Since he cannot acquire unlimited talent, you would think he could spend his money to great advantage acquiring a top-notch coaching staff?
What was McCrimmon’s record at ATL??

Word is, in the Detroit locker room, that someone has been replacing each player’s vitamin supply with placebos. I hear also that someone’s handkerchief, full of dried snot and testing positive for H1N1, is being rubbed all over each teammate’s equipment.
Todd Bertuzzi is currently under investigation for these barbaric crimes.

I know you’re a man of lists, so I think we should have an All-Injured 2009-10 NHL team. Kovalchuk, Mule, Luongo (is he injured yet?) and so on.
Ilya Kovalchuk, broken foot.
Marc Savard, broken foot.
Milan Lucic, finger surgery.
Alexander Ovechkin, upper body strain.
Roberto Luongo, hairline crack in a rib.
Jonathan Toews, concussion.
David Booth, concussion.
Ben Eager, concussion.
Marian Hossa, shoulder surgery.
Sheldon Souray, concussion.
Andrei Markov, Achilles tendon surgery.
Shea Weber, foot.
Jay Pandolfo, separated shoulder.
Paul Martin, broken arm.
Anton Volchenkov, dislocted elbow.
Chris Drury, concussion.
Maxime Talbot, shoulder surgery.
Sergei Gonchar, broken wrist.
Barret Jackman, sprained ankle.
Victor Hedman, concussion.
Daniel Sedin, broken foot.
And those are just a few examples of long-term injuries that caught my attention on the list. And doesn’t include the Wings’ collection of busted up players.

So Luongo IS injured? Holy sh**, I was just messing around there. Can we, just for old time sake, include Peter Forsberg on that list?
Peter Forsberg, shattered remnants of what once was a great hockey player.
Posted by Sullyosis from A hateful lair in Post Apocalyptic US (or Arizona) on 11/08/09 at 01:49 PM ET
Yes, Luongo is hurt. Fortunately for the Canucks I think he is expected back soon, since the rib fracture is just a hairline deal. At least is isn’t a groin again. Or a knee ligament.
(And they have Pavol Demeitra hurt again, which isn’t a shock at all.)
Sure, include Forsberg. And after last night maybe insert Cam Ward, too, after the cut on his leg.
And of course, I didn’t even list Lilja, Franzen, Filppula, or Williams. And I also forgot to list Malkin.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 11/08/09 at 01:53 PM ET
Does anyone out there have any idea what kind of cap space we have to work with now? I think with Lils potentially becoming healthy, Kenny’s hands are tied.
It might be time to cue up the Irish Jig again.
For one last season, I would love to see this happen, I said it when he cleared waivers and I’ll say it now. Shanny isn’t the same guy he used to be but I think he’s got enough to contribute offensively compared to say, Williams, and would be a great lockerroom presence with all the fresh blood lurking around.
Let’s keep the nostalgia train rolling and bring back Ray Whitney.
This would be a great move, but we just couldn’t afford him. Whitney has been a fantasy hockey powerhouse since he went to Carolina, but I just don’t see it happening.
I really don’t see us making any big moves here, unfortunately, this will be the year of the Detroit Griffins. Who knows, maybe we’ll see a flash of brilliance from someone we didn’t expect to have brought up?

I’m glad you know that won’t work, because Chelios, McCarty, and Downey are all not under contract with Detroit so they don’t have the money for them anyway.
I don’t think that Shanahan would return to Detroit. Too much travel, too far away from his family - he’d likely rather retire or wait until the new year starts and see if he can catch on with someone closer to the East coast.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 11/08/09 at 02:00 PM ET

I mean technically we could if we just signed em to two-way deals, then sent em down when the injured guys get back....their cap hit wouldn’t exceed the space we have.
but it wouldn’t work talent-wise
Posted by Itrusteddrrahmani from Ann Arbor on 11/08/09 at 02:12 PM ET
Jesus Christ that’s a lot of injuries. Anyway you cut it, this is a bad year for injuries. I hope this doesn’t continue all year and into the playoffs. Lest another inferior team win a Cup.
I think the NHL should change their slogan this season.
“The NEW NHL: Omaha Beach on ice.”
Posted by Sullyosis from A hateful lair in Post Apocalyptic US (or Arizona) on 11/08/09 at 02:27 PM ET
The Wings just won 2 big games without Franzen, Flip, and Lilja.
Last night’s game was in the dumpster before Willy’s suicide attempt
Granted, we lost another veteran, (I think about 1/2 of our vets are disabled now),
but,
just like with losing Mule, and Flip,
we have not lost his ice time.
Spread that ice time amongst the youngsters, and see what happens.
It could very well be that nothing good hapens until the netminding situation is corrected.
Fix that first,
there are competent veteran goalkeepers in the minors, and it looks like Biron will be shopped by the Isles. A decent back-up will challenge the OZ to return to his best game.
Throw the youngsters in there, wait and see, but don’t blame them for poor goalkeeping.

Minor problems. Literally. AHL teams can only have a limited number of veterans on the team. The Griffs already have Janik, Delmore, and Rissmiller (don’t know when he’s leaving).
Also, do we remember the last time the Detroit Griffins played? I believe it was December of 2006, and some until like February (someone with a better memory than me can verify). They had the best record in the West that year, and tied in points with Buffalo. Of course, there are many differences between the years. The biggest one being the number of young guys we already have on the team. But there’s reason for hope, right? Meanwhile, down here in GR, hopes for a playoff year seems to dwindle with each injury up in Detroit.

Shanny it is.
Hell, the reason he left NJ was because he didn’t think he’d play a big enough role.

Agreed. Again, I’ll never blame Ozzie, but he needs a competant backup. He needs someone who can take the workload and challenge him a bit. He was way soft last night, but he never should have been on the blue ice. Unfortunately, we couldn’t play Howard against a team like Toronto because… well… he’s terrible.
So get the wizzard a backup. Even if that means we roll with a three-headed monster for a while. Fine. Lets just resolve the issues please.

Helene St. James reports, via George :
Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said Sunday that injured forward Jason Williams will be seen by a team doctor Monday, but he likely is out at least eight weeks.
Williams suffered a broken right fibula while battling for the puck in the second period of Saturday’s 5-1 loss at Air Canada Centre to the Maple Leafs. Holland said the Wings do not expect to have to call anyone up from Grand Rapids, because Patrick Eaves (bruised left foot) should be healthy for Wednesday’s game against Columbus.
“Sometimes you’re lucky with injuries, but sometimes you just keep losing people along the way,” Holland said. “We’ve got three big games this week, and we’ve got to get back to playing the way we were, to playing better defensively.”
Tick Tock.

I’d be okay with signing Shanny, but there’s nobody else out there I’d touch with a ten-foot pole. If Shanny doesn’t want to come back, or can’t come back, etc., then let’s just roll with someone from GR.
I’m not about to trade for Devereaux and coax Brett Hull out of retirement just to reunite the “Two Kids and a Goat” line.
Face it—the Wings are GOOD this year, but they aren’t GREAT. We’ve seen a lot of great teams since the early ‘90’s. The fact that a “down” year for our favorite club will likely still involve them getting in the playoffs, and even competing for their division, is really fortunate. Most clubs have to blow it up and take at least a few seasons to retool. The Wings will be in position to retool next season with a lot of salary coming off the books, without losing any of their core.
I say we just enjoy the season, root like hell for the Wings, and see what happens. If they get through the Olympic break and are still in the division race or in a playoff spot, I will be really excited because a) they will hopefully be adding talent in the form of Franzen and b) with all the LTIR, they might have some cash to go shopping if they really think they can make some noise as a lower seed.

Just got back from the Legends Game and I think we should try to coax Fetisov out of retirement. He’s snakebitten in the offensive zone (like the rest of the Wings), but he really looked like he could have (and wanted to) put somebody straight through the boards today.
Oh shit, we need forwards, don’t we? Well, Steve Shutt scored a nice goal…
In all seriousness, if Shanny were willing to come to Detroit and accept third line minutes or less, I’d take him. Maybe he could show and/or remind Bertuzzi what it means to be a power forward.
BTW, I woke up this morning with the hotel fire alarm going off, sirens outside, and somebody loudly blow-drying her hair and the sun right in my face. What an awesome way to start a hangover. I still love this city. I’m debating on making the wife join me up here instead of going back to Kansas.

Perusing the net and came across an entertaining Canadian Press article at The Hockey News, interviewing The Captain, Hull, and Lucky Luc about their 2002 Championship season.
Hull played for five different NHL teams over his career, but considers his time in Detroit particularly special. The opportunity to play for Bowman and spend so much time around future Hall of Famers was unique.
“I was lucky enough to kind of feel what it was like to be an old New York Yankee,” said Hull. “I got to play for Casey Stengel, one of the greatest coaches that ever walked the earth. I had more fun in the one year of playing for Scotty than I did my whole career. We just seemed to have the same philosophy. We thought the game the same way.

Helene St, James has a lengthy interview with “The Captain”, and this comment, among others, caught my attention; especially considering the Wings current injury plague:
Q: What was the most eye-opening part of joining the front office?
A: How difficult it is to improve your team. It’s a slow, I think very methodical process. You’re trying to accumulate picks, accumulate prospects, bringing them into the organization, and develop them very slowly. You think you can go into an organization, sign a couple of players, make a couple of trades, and you’ve got a contender — no. It’s done very slowly. Every day I sit with Kenny and Jim (Nill) and Ryan (Martin) and we talk about everything and we analyze every move that’s made around the league. It’s tough to find good players, and then keep them. So that’s been the most eye-opening thing, is how long a road it is to build a good team.
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 11/08/09 at 05:52 PM ET
I saw Cheli play last weekend here in Texas and I wasnt really that impressed. I mean he started looking slow in the NHL a few years back and he looks slow in the AHL now. Besides we need some offense. Oh and Manny was there too but he was riding the bench. He still looks bored though, so probably plays the same. Shanny? Shanny? Shanny? Probably not. I wouldnt say no, but I think Babs is. No way on Neylander. I think we are pretty much gonna stick with what we have. Best case scenario someone offers us a serviceable goal scorer for a prospect and a pick. I dont see Kenny moving anyone off the roster. Its not time to panic. It is what it is. Shitty. But thats the way the cookie crumbles.

Very interesting.
So then we have what we have for now.
But be patient and we’ll have something different in a few years, hopefully better.
Provided all the right moves (aka guesses) were right a few years back.
Of course if you don’t want to wait a few years, just let a lot of freak injuries accumulate all at the start of the season, then it’ll be different right away, but hopefully not worse.
Hopefully.
