Call Ups Won’t Cut It Kenny

The loss?  Oh it was bad.  The Wings?  Yep, they looked like garbage.  The level of embarrassment? Pretty frigging high, considering the hockey royalty in attendance and the huge viewing audience.

But, on a grand scale…the loss, and the manner in which it was dished out, wasn’t a huge deal.  As new A2Y Gamewrecker, Voox, pointed out…the Wings are just not meant to win at the ACC.

If last night had come in the midst of October’s tailspin?  I’d be fetal, considering the opponent.  But it stopped a three-game winning streak and it interrupted some good Detroit hockey.  A brand of hockey I expect to see return Wednesday when one of the little brothers is on tap for an open-handed slap to the face.

So don’t get all twisted and sick because of one game on a Saturday night (does that ring some sort of sick bell in your head? Was it last year that the Wings couldn’t win on Saturday?  Blowouts to Bubba and the BJs I think?).

What you need to focus your nausea on is the fact that this team can’t stay healthy, and that’s a fact.

It’s not going to be goaltending, coaching, assistant coaching, hangovers, officiating, Gary’s continuing agenda or an improved division that poses the greatest threat to the Wings.  It’s now health and it’s looking bleak.

The chatter is that Tick Tock’s gonna call up somebody from GR.  Malik says it’s gonna be Tardiff, Williams or Newbury.

Me? I’m surprised we didn’t see shots of Ken Holland with a cell phone in each ear within minutes of Willie’s collision with the end boards.  In other words, I think a deal will be made.  That could mean a trade or a free agent signing.  But, and the pharmacists among you can go ahead and correct me or expand on this, I have to think that with all the wounded flesh on the sidelines Tick Tock should have a little room to maneuver.

And that’s what he has to do.  Because Jamie Tardiff’s not gonna cut it.  Kris Newbury won’t either.  Even a guy named “Hat Trick Dick” doesn’t have what we need right now and that’s offense.  Instant and consistent.  Not hopeful and surprising.  Oh, I know.  You can’t milk a stone.  Well, bitch, maybe you can’t.  But Kenny has and Kenny can.

Of course there’s a name out there and it’s sure to come up again.  It’s been 28 days since I wrote this...

He’s not coming back. Not for free, not for twenty bucks, or a million or a six pack of Busch.  It’s not happening.

Brendan Shanahan will never play for the Red Wings again.

That was before a wrist and an ankle and the easy talk of Tardiff and Newbury.  It might be time to start thinking about bringing back a vet who knows how to score.  No matter how impossible that prospect used to be.  Circumstances have a way of softening grudges.  It might be time to cue up the Irish Jig again.

Where was Gordie last night? His absence was extremely unusual.

He left the Wings because he wasn’t named Captain.

I’ve always accepted his explanation about why he left at face value.

Of course, last night the ACC was completely full.  The noise level for these was through the roof:

I read an article. I don’t remember where. It was a couple of years after he left, and he did say he expected to be named Captain, and said that was the reason he left Detroit.

That is why I have it in for Shanny. I’ll try to find it.

I’m not sure how that relates to what I said, or if it’s a jab or a compliment, but I’m going to cover all bases and say thank you sir.

It doesn’t relate and is neither a jab nor a compliment.  You’re welcome.

If that’s true my opinion of him would change radically.

Oddly enough, I am quite calm about all of this - and I just figured out why.

I spent the entire Tigers season on the Rodneycoaster, and if you can survive that many Fernando Rodney saves without resorting to a defibrillator, you will manage the sports-related stress of any other situation with aplomb.

(It made me miss having a REAL closer, like Willie Hernandez in 1984.  Far fewer heart attacks back then.)  smile

I will always think the world of Shanny for his contributions. Without him who knows if we would be so arrogant and cocky, but I will stand by what I said, and try my darndest to find the article. That is why I will always have it in for Shanny.

I say we just enjoy the season, root like hell for the Wings, and see what happens.

Sounds like a plan to me, Nathan. This team doesn’t have the look of some past teams that you didn’t dare change the channel when they went down 3-0. So when they pull a stinker like last night, or the Buffalo game, I just flip over to those 6 episodes of NCSI I keep on the Tivo, and proceed with my evening.

I figure Jethro Gibbs is Steve Yzerman with a gun and a badge, instead of skates and a stick. YMMV.

If the players we have can’t continue to right the ship, the ship won’t get righted.  No one out there who Holland would pony up the assets for would make that huge of a difference right now.

I haven’t read the previous posts but we’re not getting Kovalchuk via trade.

Great shots, JJ, looks like you guys had nice seats for the Legends Game.

A little context to our group photos taken last night:

The picture stonehands posted in the LB of us was taken in front of photos showing the Leafs winning the Cup.  We could not find any colour photos to pose in front of.
From l-r: Ann (wearing #40), VooX (#19), JJ (#13)
We have photos taken with Ann’s camera which are of better quality and include a random, Indian teenager wearing a Red Wings jersey posing with us. I suspect it was Osrt.

The picture taken from the bar includes three die-hard Leafs fans joining us, and reveling in the results of the Wings Charity Game.  The Wheat Sheaf is Toronto’s oldest bar, from when we Toronto was known as York and was the capital of Upper Canada (Canada west of Quebec), predating our nation’s confederation.

The Wheat Sheaf has been around since 1849 which makes it arguably the oldest watering hole in Toronto. Back in the good old days, pre-Confederation even, soldiers has easy access to a quick pint at The Wheat Sheaf by way of underground tunnels that connected Fort York to the tavern.

Maybe we all have to face the fact that this is a “transitional” year and we’re going to have to play the cards we’re dealt.  No shame in that.  If some serious suckage this season means the Wings will be better in the long run then bring it on.  I won’t like it, oh hell no I won’t like it, but I’ll live through it and hope for the best.  Remember, this isn’t “fantasy hockey” where everybody and his dog are GM’s ( by the way the dog leads the league by 3 games) and trades are made on an hourly basis.  Keep the faith.

Posted by calquake on 11/08/09 at 01:27 PM ET

These are my exact thoughts on this season, and I couldn’t have put it any better.  Cal, I’m going to have these words engraved on a bronze plaque and put up behind the bar of the Hasek.  A Nobel Peace Prize and one Internet to you, good sir.

The Wings just won 2 big games without Franzen, Flip, and Lilja.
Last night’s game was in the dumpster before Willy’s suicide attempt…

Spread that ice time amongst the youngsters, and see what happens.

Throw the youngsters in there, wait and see, but don’t blame them for poor goalkeeping.

And Gramps makes his best post of the regular season.  Very non-Eeyore of him with the willingness to let the kids take the reigns, but not without some skepticism.  Thank you, Gramps, this well-reasoned response to the problems makes me think your heart is not all stone.

The Leafs are my second favourite team, were it not for Clark being a wounded warrior, and Yzerman being God, I wouldn’t be here.  My support of the Leafs surprised some, but not those that remember me lamenting about them in the past.

Believe this Leafs fan, 19, it can get much worse than Detroit has it right now.  No need to take away your shoelaces, belts, and sharp objects yet.

As Gramps says, give the kids a chance to earn their stripes under pressure and scrutiny.  And as Cal says, if we struggle this year as we rebuild and wait for Lidstrom’s salary cap hit to go down, I am okay with that.  The ship is not sinking yet.

And the dog Cal mentions makes more accurate trade predictions than old grey-eye glance Dwayne ever could.

JJ, VooX - thanks for the pics.

Helps us less fortunate, having to peck at the keyboards and cuss at week streams, to feel more a part of the arena atmosphere.

Too bad it wasn’t a win but a live game, especially celebrating the Stevie, had to be worth the trip. I’m green with envy.

One thing, though: Ann is definitely the best looking of the trio.

I’ve decided i’m not worried. if we go .500 until Jan 1st i’d be happy.  By that point we should get J Will, Flip, and Lils back. and then Franzen heading into the playoffs in april…..I think we’ll be written off a bit over the next few weeks as we do what we can with this lineup, and then we will be the best team in 2010 calendar year and will be on a huuuuuge roll heading into the playoffs, where we’ll assuredly do our thing…..Kinda like the Pens last year, sans the coaching change (well, hopefully except for McCrim)

I saw that joke coming and it was still funny.  By the way Voox, you are exactly what I pictured you to look like after all these months of reading A2Y.  No letdown at all ... certainly not disappointing—like the time I saw Chief’s picture on here and was sad that he wasn’t a literal native American.

Just caught up with all the posts from the past few days, I was out of town all weekend at a friend’s house for their one year wedding anniversary party (my wife and I were both in the wedding) and couldn’t catch the game and obviously not the live blog.  Biggest bummer was missing the ceremony with Stevie, sounds like it was awesome.  I was dumb and got confused about what time the game was and by the time I checked the score it was already over.  Fortunately by that time I was already countless cups of “bitches brew” and two full Hofbrau Haus steins deep so I just shuddered, threw my phone down, pounded the rest of my stein, then promptly refilled it.

The one thing that does make me feel better is our history with the Leafs lately and what seems to be a building tradition of games surrounding special events.  Not that that’s a good thing, but it’s much easier for me to write off a poor performance because of those factors.  I had been feeling damn good about the team over the past week and a half or so and for me this loss is enough to completely take that away.  We played some great against Calgary, Boston, and San Jose.

The thing that really sucks is JWil’s injury.  Hard to deal with and a bit nervewracking, but at the same time I still feel things will be okay.  Giving the kids some more time and experience is a good thing, and better it happen now than in February.  So funny that the focus right now is on finding offense because we can’t score and the PP sucks.  Just seems weird and wrong to say about the Red Wings.

From the News:

Injuries proving Red Wings have depth issues

*#$%@& you.  How deep do we need to be?  Are we supposed to be the Grand Canyon of stockpiled forwards?

I can just imagine the whining now.  Kenny should have planned for the day he’d lose an entire line to long term injury.

I’ve got three words for you Detroit News:  Sal Airy Cap.  Now *#$%@& off.
