Campbell, Goat Of Game 2: Kronwall’s Hit Was “Gutless”

Updated (and you guys have probably seen this but I’ll get nuts and post it anyway): Mike Babcock’s presser, including his reaction to Joel Quenneville and Brian Campbell’s comments.
Haven’t we heard that term somewhere before?
Hmmm.
Mike Keane in ‘97 perhaps? Awesome.
“I thought (Kronwall) jumped. I thought Marty didn’t have the puck. I thought his forearm came up high. I thought it was gutless all around,’’ Campbell said. “He’s done it hundreds of times in the league and it seems like nothing ever happens. ... These guys gotta pay for it, guys that are taking shots to the head. It’s unacceptable, and it’s not like it’s the first time it’s happened with that guy.”
And I’m guessing the hit on Kronwall after his legal pasting of glass-jawed Havlat was…brave?
You know what’s even worse than Brian Campbell running his mouth after the way he’s played?

Night Moves is 183. What a joke. What a travesty.
Mike Babcock’s presser…thanks Bella.

What a carrot-topped big-talking ineffective-spinning-no-defense whiner.
Before I didn’t mind him all that much - but now I want to epoxy his lips together to make him shut up. Stop talking until you can play well enough to have a coach trust you not to make a dumbass pass at the blue line in overtime and not recognize that it’s a mistake that you shouldn’t do again.

Chief. Sorry this douchebag took you away from your family and boat. Does anyone have any tapes by the Mick regarding this crap or his perspective of these playoffs? Us transplants would really appreciate his opinions. Screw the other Detroit MSM. Except Bruce of course.
Posted by cigar_nurse from Greenville South Cakalakee on 05/23/09 at 05:42 PM ET
This is the same Brian Campbell that told us a few days ago that his giveaway in game 2 that resulted on the Wings OT win was a play he was proud of, and would do a hundred times over.
The guy is certifiably insane.
Posted by Red Winger from Sault Ste Marie on 05/23/09 at 05:45 PM ET
Because Campbell’s comments are sooooooooooo way over the line, (obviously spoken from an emotional, team-bias point-of-view and not based on the actual events - watch the video, jerk, and view the screen grab, then try to back-up your blah, blah, blah with something supstantial. moron.) it isn’t worth trying to refute them.
The sadest part, though, is NHL.com posted his rant as a News Headline. How ‘bout that; the “neutral” position of the NHL kept the report on-the-level and unbiased for the benefit of the Chicago and Detroit fans, right?
/ heavy sarcastism /
Thanks. Gary. Ass.
Let’s hope the ‘Hawks don’t make the mistake of really trying to head hunt - I seriously doubt the Wings would not respond appropriately!

Gutless, eh? Then I suppose Campbell’s hit on Umberger must have been gutless as well. Whatever. Keep making dumbass plays in your zone, Campbell. Next time try your spin-o-rama move right in front of your goalie.

Babcock is fantastic. he said, in a live press conference, everything fans and media talking heads have been saying. no pulling punches from him.
I love him insinuating that Quenneville knows it was a clean check but is just saying what he has to say, and wonder if he’s going to get a fine from the league for his comments about their lack of accountability toward officials.
top notch press conference.

Campbell is coming off as an idiot.
Posted by RWBill from the Land of 12 in 12. on 05/23/09 at 06:07 PM ET
Campbell’s hit on Umberger
absolutely identical. solid shoulder check, not inteference, no head hunting…he simply BLASTED the opposing player, which is HOCKEY.
oh, and his feet came off the ice as he made contact. imagine that.
Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach on 05/23/09 at 06:07 PM ET
I thought his forearm came up high.
stop taking the brown acid.
Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach on 05/23/09 at 06:08 PM ET
Lol, apparently we’re on the same wavelength, HockeyJoe. Actually, I recalled Campbell’s hit on Umberger because someone had mentioned Stuart’s hit on Umberger in another thread. Your post was great; the inclusion of Campbell’s sweat commercial, inspired. However, like many things in life, our references to the same hit are a coincidence.
Posted by Aphaea from Pennsylvania on 05/23/09 at 06:08 PM ET
Hey at least Campbell wasn’t standing around like an idiot while a unchecked Pahlsson passed the rebound to Sharp for the OT goal.
Lidstrom looked like crap on that play. I thought he was god and doesn’t make mistakes?
Guess not.
Posted by Jimmy from Windsor on 05/23/09 at 06:15 PM ET
CBC: The league indicated no additional suspension will be levied on Kronwall as they were “satisfied with the call on the ice”
And CBC plays a quote of Campbell being a hypocritical douche.

Let me just repeat what I said in the Babcock interview post…
———————————————————————————————————————-
Draper can’t play. Abbie is going to go in his spot. Be good for him. Play his natural position.
Translation: “It’ll be good for Abbie. Get him some playing time. It’s all good. No problem at all. We think every problem in the world is just an opportunity for someone else. I just wish someone would take Hossa out so we could give Meech a chance to shine.”
Datsyuk is going to be the same thing as it was the day before. We’ll see. I noticed his stuff was hanging up. They’re hoping they can get him in his boot and get him going.
Translation: “I really don’t know what the hell is going on with Pavel. I just cruise by his locker every hour or so and see if his equipment is hanging there. It’s all good. No problem at all. We think every problem in the world is just an opportunity for someone else. I just wish someone would take Hossa out so we could give Meech a chance to shine.”
I heard Joel Quenneville talk about it. What he does is he comes in, whether he believes it or not, he tells you what he’s got to tell you. I actually believe what I’m telling you. It’s the facts.
Translation: “I love Joel, but that son a bitch couldn’t analyze a play correctly any more than he could lead a team past the Wings in the playoffs. And, unlike Joel, I only deal in the facts. That son of a bitch is a liar. Actually, he’s a lying liar, but, you know, I can’t actually say that so I’ll just let whatever I’ve said speak for itself.”
Q. You mentioned a memo from the league. What did it say?
MIKE BABCOCK: I don’t know if it’s a memo. ‘Memo’ might be the wrong word. Maybe I’m getting myself in hot water here. Maybe I’ll just stop.
Wasn’t there a release?
Q. I don’t think there was. I think Kris King talked to us.
MIKE BABCOCK: Maybe there wasn’t. Maybe I’m making it up. No, I don’t know.
Q. But you believe what you’re saying?
MIKE BABCOCK: I believe what I’m saying.
Translation: “Maybe I am making it all up, but I’ll tell you right now that I believe everything I’m saying. Of course, I also believe everything Homer says and, apparently, no one can figure out what either of us are saying, so I’ve got that going for me.”

As for Campbell’s comments, let’s hope Kronner or Stewie or Abbadabba take a personal interest in correcting his point of view…as well as the shape of his nose. Nothing “gutless” of course. Just some good ol’ shoulder-to-the-chest-sliding-up-to-the-face kind of hocky.
I think Game 3 pretty much assured that the old Hawks/Wings rivalry is chugging along at full steam right now. Before Game 1, I just hoped the Wings would win. Now I want to see them crush these little upstarts. At this point, nothing less than total domination will do in Game 4.

Watch the replay of the OT goal. Filppula and Lidstrom should be ashamed of themselves. Instead of laying down to block a shot from the point, they both do the chicken dance and the puck gets through to the goal. This is playoff hockey right? Pathetic.

Jeebus I don’t know if I am more proud of Babcock or of the Wings team for, among other things, they way they came back last night against all odds.

Now THAT was more of a penalty on Carolina than Kronner’s fair hit last night. He got his fists and stick up high above the shoulders while putting him against the glass, and yet Maurice says “We like a bit of physical hockey and don’t care too much for that one.”

Great job on Kronwalled, Paul… an absolute classic.
Is that Calquake in the front row to the right of the action? Do we have a new gamewrecker? And what about the Baldwin brother on the other side of the action, this one: :-o

The last two people who used the word, “Gutless” to describe the Wings’ play got ousted out of the playoffs BY the Wings. See Wisdoucheski and Keane.
That’s starting to rank up with the whining to the refs by the coaches leading up to a Wings victory. See Michel Therrien, Ken Hitchcock, and now, Randy Carlyle. Keep pushing your luck, Quenneville.

Chief, hope you and your family got some quality time on the water.
Uncle Mike’s press conference today was just classic. Don’t read the transcript; head over to the Wings site to watch it. If someone can get me a screengrab of his batshitcrazy expression when they ask him about Campbell’s comments, I’ll be in your debt forever. And the Qstache line: “What he does is he comes in, whether he believes it or not, he tells you what he’s got to tell you. I actually believe what I’m telling you. It’s the facts.” Gold.
