Can You Score When It Counts?  Re-capping An Epic Live Blog

Today, and tonite for some, we’re talking about scoring.  Unless, of course, you decide to write something that even hints that Ken Holland would willingly let Marian Hossa walk and then “replace” him with the likes of Todd Bertuzzi and Jason Williams.  If you are going to even suggest that Tick Tock considered those two a viable “replacement” for Hossa?  Well, heck.  You’re just a dumbass…and scoring is just not likely.  Well, maybe the faux kind.

But none of you wrote that.  Some of you wrote things critical of Tick Tock when he signed The Unibomber, AKA Bundy, AKA RP McMurphy, AKA Stillwoozi, AKA J. Edgar Hoover, AKA Keanu Reeves (woops, look who’s still reading comments).  But nobody in their right, yet admittedly subjective, minds ever claimed Holland “let Hossa walk”, only to “replace” him with Williams and Reeves.

Anyone who would write something like that should just give up…on scoring.  Because if they’re going to type that, who knows what the hell is going to leave their mouth when the time comes to close a deal.  Scoring, as we said, just isn’t an option.  You want further proof?  Ok. Do this.  Find a huge website that starts with Y..as in “you’re biased” and ends in O…as in “of course we are”, then click on “sports”, then “hockey”, then “dick head”. That will take you to a section called “What we learned.”  Poof. You’re there. Have fun.

Uh oh.  Too far?  Am I going to get more emails that will go unanswered?  Don’t bother.  It’s…just…an…act.

Back to scoring.  Saturday night, Baroque gave us some sort of sick, twisted countdown of obscene milestones.  Every minute the Wings didn’t score it got worse.

Just in case anyone is curious, I calculated how long the Wings have to go scoreless in this game to match their longest scoring droughts.

Currently at 153:22.

With another 8:53, they will match the fourth longest in franchise history (Dec 1953).

With another 19:30, they will match the third longest (Jan - Feb, 1969).

(So with one more scoreless period, they will have the third longest scoring drought in Red Wings history.)

Another 44:36 will tie the second longest drought (March, 1977).

Another 56:01 will tie the longest scoring drought in their history, from November of 1954.  My parents were eight years old then.

Actually, I almost kind of hope they hold off until the first period is over.  It might be interesting to see history in the making.  Twisted, I know - but it would be historic.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 11/28/09 at 07:04 PM ET

What was the final tally on that?  I’m sure it was posted but I must have missed it.

But I missed a lot on Saturday.  Didn’t watch the game and I’d love to tell you that it was because I was domestically conflicted.  But that wasn’t the case.  Oh, we went to a shindig. But I could have DVR’d it. I just chose not to.  For the first time in three years, at least, I made a conscious decision NOT to watch the Wings.

But technology…that bitch.  The emails started pouring in, as usual, right when the LB kicked off.  Every comment, delivered to my door. I didn’t look at any of them for like 91 minutes or something.  Then it was just too much.  I tried to resist. I did. I swear to the adorable one that it was my every intention to just enjoy a Saturday evening with our friends, forget about the Wings, pretend I was an adult for just one Saturday.

And, really, what damage would one glance do?  One tiny little popcorn fart of a look at my phone. I told myself, “I’ll read this comment and I’ll be able to tell how they’re doing and then that’s it and I won’t look anymore because this is a night I’m not paying attention to those motherfuchers because they’re wrecking me from the inside out.”  One look.  One comment.  And one comment became three.

And three comments turned into torture.

Fuch this shit.

I think I set a new record, I have already switched the game off and went to my stockpile of Dexter episodes. I am choosing not to let my Sat night be ruined.

Posted by cainer4wingsglory on 11/28/09 at 08:38 PM ET

And so it began.  My “Wing free” Saturday turned into the same frigging Saturday every other Saturday seems to have been the last two years.  I read your comments as they came in.  Ready, set, vomit. Ready, set, vomit.  Over and over.  Another deficit. More wasted opportunities. More sickness.  More alcohol.  More of the same.

Then?

Somebody said something about it being 2-1 and they had no idea how but by god there was still a chance.  And then Draper scored and everything bad that’s happened to us the first two months of this nuts in a vice grip of a season was getting turned around.

Until Brad Boyes scored because that’s how god decided to make us suffer.  God finally heard me say it one too many times that Jesus was invented by Santa Claus.  Payback time.

More comments. More sadness. More stress.  For some reason this game, this little game in November, had taken on a kind of importance usually reserved for May or…swallow it, just let it go back down…June.  Why do we do this to ourselves? Holy hell. We are the definitions of “self-inflicted.”  With the Wings down by 1, on a night when they virtually exploded like a guy who doesn’t write for a national website and claim to be objective on his first chance to “score”, for more goals then they’d seen in two full games?  We reached for the tongs and started to squeeze as the seconds ticked down.

I’m going to show you these comments, but not out of scorn. You guys know as well as I do that had I not puss’d out of this thing, I’d have been more suicidal than what you’re about to read.  With what I believe to be about two minutes left…

And I read every one of them, Gramps.  I did.  Sitting at a kitchen table with dice in front of me playing some game I didn’t understand and distracted by our common Detroit denominator.  Feeling the stare from my right, but knowing it was all for show…she’s gotten to the point where she stresses along with us.  I had no idea how much time was left.  Just kept reading the comments as they came in. Knowing the end was near and wondering again why we do this to ourselves. Why the hell do we allow this team to just…dictate our moods, our emotions, way, way, way too much of our lives. What kind of “adult” lets themselves…

Of course it wasn’t Datsyuk, was it?  Whatever.  And then my phone died.  And then overtime happened. And then I was hitting refresh over and over and MF’ing over on three different phones and it was insane because it was Saturday and the Wings needed this one.  For some reason, they needed this thing as bad as any game any of us could recall.  Well…not THAT bad, but you get the idea.

And it was the frigging Unibomber who saved us.  Interesting, eh?  One of you guys sent me an email recently that said Todd Bertuzzi was going to score a big goal, make a huge hit, do something memorable that we were all going to point to as a turning point.  I’m gonna try and find that email in time for the LB tonite because it’s what I thought of when I finally found out it was the Sociopath who won it for us in Gary’s skills competition.

Crazy night.  And I missed it all, but I didn’t miss as much as I thought I could.  Does that make sense?  Couldn’t stay away.  And, just when you think they’re going to drive that final spike of disgust straight into your temple, they let us off the hook to live and die another day.

Wings lose tonite and Saturday’s nothing but a blip.  Nothing but a discrepancy or an exception.  They lose tonite and HandHimAnUzi’s antics were just a mirage.  Because we can’t handle one game here, another game there, a few PK successes followed by a 3 for 7 puke fest.

We’ve had enough.  November’s almost over and Voox says December’s gonna be our month.  I like to debate, but I learned a long time ago that one guy you never get the best of is a bartender. It just doesn’t make sense to push your luck. Everybody loses.

Unless of course you write about hockey for a search engine, then you can go ahead and argue with the bartender all you want.  Nobody else is listening at 1am anyway, eh?  Not even the big ones.

You guys would be amazed, or not, at how often a post starts out in one direction and ends up way, way, way off the frigging map.  Live Blog tonite, of course.

I read every comment of the liveblog as soon as I was able to and relived every single emotion I felt throughout the course of watching the game.

Also, I may have been drunk and delirious, but I still remember looking at the clock with 1:38 to play and thinking that I was going to will them to tie it up.  thirty seconds later it sneaks in from right under my nose up there in the mezzanine level.  When it went in, Every Wings fan around me just stood up and silently clapped.  We then held our breaths until we realized that Bertuzzi had ended the game.  It took all the energy I could muster not to shit blood.  I’m pretty sure a woman fainted and a few people over in section 325 started speaking in tongues.

Or, as Keanu Reeves would have had to say about that moment: “Woah”.

Ah that’s too bad your phone crapped out not long before my first entry of the night, after I attempted a similar voluntary non-Wing-Saturday.  Several intermittent score checks reinforced my decision to not reduce my lifespan by weeks in a single night, and the Heineken was flowing.  That is, until I saw “third intermission”, and one WTF was followed by another, and another.  Glad I showed up for OT, to say the least.

Chief, your Saturday mirrored mine, except for the fact that I was at home nursing a bad cold and a grumpy spouse with whom I’d promised to watch the USC/UCLA game “without that damned laptop and your fake friends.” The wife grew up in Westwood, her dad was a UCLA prof and she is a huge UCLA fan.

The wife was out at the market at kickoff getting me sudafed and other drugs, so I was able to see Pav’s tying goal. But a minute into OT, I see the headlights on the driveway, quickly put away the laptop and rewind the DVR to find out how USC took a 7-0 lead. I hit the live button to catch back up just as she walks in the door and I update her on the game.

So get this. She sits down and pulls out her “damned” netbook and proceeds to surf teh Gore for a duvet cover. I protest her hypocrisy. She retorts that she is still paying attention to the game and that she doesn’t get a glazed over look and giggle like I do with my fake friends. I’m about to really get into a knock-down-drag-out fight with her when I realize that if I’m patient, I can use the situation to my advantage.

Sure enough within a couple of minutes, she hands me the netbook and says “what do you think of this maroon sateen striped duvet?” I quickly surf to ESPN to get the result. “What are you doing,” she snarls. “Oh, I’m just zooming in on the pic of the duvet to get a better look at the stripe pattern, sweetie, it sure is pretty,” I say as I read the result and blurt out “Bertuzzi?!?!”

“Damn it, your on with your fake friends again, gimme back my computer.”

Needless to say, my bad cold wasn’t the only reason I was sleeping on the couch Saturday night. And even though I’m not a USC fan, I was just a little happy that they blew out UCLA.

Talent, talent, talent.  Hossa, Oompa Loompa, Sammy (that is a helluva line, gone).  Mule, Willy, Wally (that is a helluva line gone).  Kronner, Lilja (that is a helluva D pair gone).

Two incredible lines gone, no wonder the Wings are having scoring issue.

A solid D pair gone, no wonder the GAA, and PK are too damn ugly.

If only Mr. I could open his wallet, all would be well.  Ya friggin Hoo - -  idiots.

Can you imagine the hole DET would be in now if Tick Tock had resigned Hossa.  3/4 of the roster would be from G.R.

The game against the Blues was a condensed version of the Wings’ season, alot of pretty awful with some glimpses of brilliance.  The Circus PP goal was amazing.  Jimmah was very good.

But, I’ll remember this game for the Wings showing a huge amount of grit and determination.  It is like they collectively said enough is enough.

JJ = not a Gamewrecker, WooHoo!

Well, done Chief.

Nothing is more hilarious than hearing my grandpa, in his heavy Slovakian-accent, talk about his illegal triple-distillery in occupied Czechoslovakia, pissing in the double-distilled vodka he needed to make bribe the Nazi soldiers with, and pouring sand in their gas tanks when they were harassing the other villagers.

I’m feeling good about tonight’s game, and the first time in a long while.

I saw a lot of positives Saturday night, and Howard is playing much better than I ever expected.

Noticed TPH was finally dumping the puck into the corner instead of smashing it into a crowded crease to be blocked.  This clears the crease as the defenders are forced to move to the corner
and halfboards, opens up the ice for our other players that were finally not standing still.  That was during the 5 on 5 play.  I hope to see our other point men follow our captains example.

The success of our PK was undetermined and not likely to repeat tonight, however, as we got a lucky break with very few minors called on either team Saturday.

Saw some fierce forechecking from lines other than our 4th.

It is the 5th in 7 nights for both teams and fatigue may be a big factor.  Unfortunately a grind like that has more mental fatigue than physical and that can lead to injuries.

...Keep your heads up….

I’ve always said that I would get season tickets for a team that moved to Kansas City and go to every home game while wearing my Red Wings sweaters.  They’d definitely be my second-favorite team.

I’m not sure if I would want that team to be in the Central Division with Detroit or replacing Detroit, who would move to the East.  Seeing the Red Wings 40 minutes from my house three times a season would be awesome, but being able to have a second-favorite team in the other conference would also have its benefits.  Growing up an army brat and moving around a lot, I’ve never felt myself really tied to any Kansas City teams.  I don’t like the Royals or the Chiefs.  I might eventually come to really like a Kansas City hockey team, but I can’t see ever rooting for them over the Wings.

I have spend nearly every minute of the last 3 weeks with my Dad. He’d come to MO to deer hunt with me. We spent more time hunting our asses off(unsuccessfully mind you) & I lit fire to most of my vacation left this year while he was here. I saw more of my Dad in the last 3 weeks than I have in 11 years combined. Had a great time just being father and son, one of the true real things in life that means everything to me.
Since early November, I have seen about 30 minutes of anything Red Wings until today. I just dropped him off at the airport and have one hell of a hollow feeling right now…I’m not too proud (and will never be) to admit I miss my Dad.
I will say catching up on some of the off the wall meandering streams of comments here has given me a much needed distraction, not too mention reaffirmed the fact that in regards to all things Wings… I didn’t miss much over the last few weeks. I’m baaaaaack.

I missed the LB on Saturday as well, but it turned into a helluva night for me. It was my work’s Christmas party, and I had gotten a room. So I’m just getting into my room and I refresh the page on my cell phone, and it’s 2-2. I wqas pumped. Got out of the shower, and it’s 3-2 BBBB’s. That got me deflated a little, but just as I’m about to head out the door, I refresh again, and it’s a tie game, and I’m pumped again. I enter the party, find my buddies, and just as I sit down I refresh the page again, and the Wings have won. I had no idea who scored, but I was giddy. And at this point of the party, they’re handing out Christmas presents to everyone in the “social club”. Well they were at like the 25th name when I turn to my buddy Justin on my left and I tell him (He’s a Flames fan, but also a big Wings fan, his favourite player of all time is Chris Chelios) “Don’t worry dude, just like the Wings and Flames tonight, we’re gonna come from behind and get like TV’s or something.” Sure enough, I got a 19” TV with a built-in DVD player. Then the liquor and beer was flowing nicely, and I proceeded to have the best night I’ve had since I moved out here.

And it all began with a Red Wings victory.

LET’S GO RED WINGS!

I have another random “Kansas” question for you… Had a team ever moved to Kansas City (or if it happens in the future), would that threaten your Red Wing-allegiance at all?  Would they automatically become your second favorite team?

Dont live in KS but do dwell in KC, but shorter answer here. HELL NO.

Why the hell do we allow this team to just…dictate our moods, our emotions, way, way, way too much of our lives.

I think it’s a crazy little thing called loyalty. Something that there is not enough of in this world today. I would venture to say that most of us here are very true to what we believe in, and, will go the distance even in the worst of times.

I’m not talking Wings only. It’s how you live every day. Deep down, there is a deep down. Bitches.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

But like a Wings fan during the Darkness of Harkness, I still somehow stubbornly believe that next time will be different.

It’s just that I couldn’t believe hockey fans could be that stupid.

You’re doing a disservice to hockey fans everywhere by lumping Blows fans in there.  Just sayin.

As always, I love you Kate.  You ARE the embodiment of a Red Wings fan… and a Michigan/Detroit native.
