Good god. 1 to 4 inches of snow expected in DC today.
It’s “Winter Storm ‘09.”
And this would be the Doug Brown edition, the 17th consecutive post devoted to the ASS.G.
Let it serve as a warning to you Wing faithful: they’ll be coming out of the woodwork today.
Greg Wyshynski caved last night around 6pm, and that’s unfortunate. But it is what it is and The Bitter in St. Lose, Denver and especially Pittsburgh? They’ll be all over the place today, reacting to this.
If you haven’t read the Puck Daddy piece, do so. Greg starts it out with three words, “Poor Sidney Crosby”. Even quoted from Paul Kelly, and even used for effect? Pathetic and amazingly submissive toward Bettman and his minions.
But it gets better.
I have to admit that seeing the All-Star Weekend experience first-hand
brainwashed meslightly modulated my feelings about the quasi-suspensions of Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings for no-showing.
Translation: he attended the circus, sipped from the faucet and has now joined the legions, the growing majority, of those who can’t see this for what it is.
Well, that’s cool. Or as Greg would say, “whatever.”
He has his opinion, no matter how jaded it’s admittedly become by the wonderment of ASS.G weekend in Montreal, and today we’re finally reading those of the Wings themselves and the Diggers in Detroit. What? Oh yes.
If the NHL truly needed all its shiniest stars in the All-Star Game, the league wouldn’t have a goofy Internet voting system that awarded starting spots to four Canadiens players and three Blackhawks. Of all the issues the NHL faces, getting the Wings to help spotlight a meaningless exhibition should be way down the list.
If the Wings are so vital, why have they been relegated all these years to the Western Conference, so some of their biggest playoff games end at 1 a.m.? Why would the league have such an unbalanced schedule that great draws Toronto, Montreal, the Rangers and the Penguins rarely make visits to Joe Louis Arena?
And then there’s this question. If this had been fat-ass Keith Tkachuk, would the suspension have occured? Mike Modano, even? What if players with names like Vanek or Streit had legitmate injuries and decided to stay in their hometowns for treatment? Would they have been suspended?
Right.
And then there’s this.
An unrepentant Nick Lidstrom had no regrets in putting the needs of the Detroit Red Wings ahead of the marketing demands of the NHL in opting to skip the All-Star Game in Montreal this past weekend.
Waddell, as usual, has plenty of good stuff in there. But I do love that lead. “An unrepentent Nick Lidstrom…”. F’ing A Right. Exactly what a Captain should be in a situation like this. Exactly.
And 19 of you will recognize and understand the significance of the capitalization in the previous sentence.
Wojo used this phrase in his column: “Wings Against The World.”
Can there be any doubt now?
Waddell, who also reveals the Wings are already referring to the league’s hypocrisy as “The Crosby Rule”, goes deeper and finally gets to what we’ve all been saying here for a long, long time.
The Wings have quietly been annoyed about the Stanley Cup champs being treated as stage props for the Winter Classic as well as in the NHL’s marketing campaigns.
Monday, Detroit goalie Chris Osgood dared to say what many in Wings dressing room have been saying in off-the-record asides.
“In the new cap era, the league is built for different teams to win every year, so it wouldn’t be good for the league if we won again would it?” Osgood said. “They want the fans to think their team has a chance to win every year.
“Do you see a lot of (NHL) commercials with us in it? Most of them are of Pittsburgh scoring on us or Pittsburgh beating us and we’re the team that won. I think we are probably the New York Yankees of the NHL. People dislike us a lot.
“We do have our fans around the league. Thank God we need them cheering for us, but we have a lot of people who like to see us lose and like to see us get guys suspended.”
The commercials Osgood’s referring to?
Funny, funny comments in this post. Love the stuff from the “real Wing fans” who find our decorum here at A2Y to be a “disgrace to the organization.” Oooh. “Real Wing fans”, eh? Yeah. You can go ahead and suck it. Those are the idiots I can’t handle, but all of you dispatched with them very effectively.
And the trolls, the anonymous ones from far off places where they hate them some Wings? You’re more than welcome to stay.
You’ll find that the 19 readers here at A2Y can wallow in the sewer or they can rise above it with logic, like our friend Voox did around 0100 this morning.
An epic post, one that will go so far over the heads of many that it was almost a waste of time. But to those who can grasp it, you’ll be smarter when you’re finished.
Naturally, his closing line is the one that will rankle many. But, again, it is what it is.
“To paraphrase George Orwell: In today’s NHL all teams are equal but some are more equal than others.”
And those who are more equal are going to be faced with resentment, especially from a commissioner who isn’t smart enough to see what they’ve brought the league he’s nearly destroyed.
Finally, from the Freep’s Jamie Samuelsen.
This is the model franchise in the league, and they constantly get the short end when it comes to scheduling and rules and salary caps. They do everything right, yet the rules are changed to hurt them. Datsyuk left the game in Phoenix with his hip injury, and Lidstrom has been a model citizen his entire career and they are the players that get singled out? Ridiculous.
Yeah, Jamie. It’s ridiculous. Where ya been?

Thanks for the compliment about my nocturnal emmissions at 01:00. I suspect my post’s length will deter the drooling trolls from ever reading it. I doubt even Mr. Puck Daddy himself, the reason many troops found us, will remove his head from Bettman’s rectum long enough to read it.
We never expect a well thought-out argument from most of our detractors, though. Usually all they are lucid enough to post is “F*ck Detroit”. Well to fight fire with fire I will give them a response that’s brief enough for them to comprehend:
F*ck you.

Great post by Voox. Should be required reading, methinks.
Funny you mention the bread and milk, Baroque. People around these parts in SC go crazy when even a dusting is called for. You’d think it’s the end of the world. I thought it was a joke when the local news program suggested that people stock up (they were calling for ‘up to an inch’ of snow that night). However, I drove by the grocery store that evening and the parking lot was overflowing. That made me feel incredibly happy to know that it snows so infrequently in SC that people go nuts when it’s even mentioned.

According to TSN, Paul Kelly continues to spread the lie.
NHLPA executive director Paul Kelly said the NHLPA never agreed to the policy or has ever seen any written policy from the league addressing this issue. And that even though Marty Brodeur and Roberto Luongo sat out a game with pay after last year’s All-Star game, that doesn’t mean the NHLPA endorses the policy. Kelly did say, however, it’s in everyone’s best interests going forward to be served clear notice on what rules apply.
Oh really? The Brodeur Fallacy has already been disproven. Now we have The Luongo Fallacy. The truth? Bobby did miss that game. The reason?
Curtis Sanford started in goal while All-Star Roberto Luongo continued to spend time with his pregnant wife at their summer home in Florida. Sanford, playing his second game since Dec. 15, didn’t last long.
The impression I get from this is that Kelly doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Everyone paying any attention at all knows that this “agreement” was introduced after the previous ASS.G, so why does Kelly apparently insist on mentioning The Fallacies of Brodeur and Luongo? Is he really that much of a tool?

Wow. That Waddell article- I want to frame it.
However, the Wings’ captain said he was quite surprised to learn of what the Wings players were calling the ‘Crosby Rule’ of avoiding a ban for just showing up to mingle at the festivities.
Team officials also said they were unaware that Pavel Datsyuk and Lidstrom had the option to avoid sitting out if they just showed up for the three days.
“I heard it through (media reports of) Sidney Crosby going there and not playing,” Lidstrom said.
“I heard he wasn’t going to be suspended, so that’s how I heard. They never called me and told me that.”
Lidstrom said it wouldn’t have made any difference if he’d been given the option.
“I had already made my up mind on what to do,” Lidstrom said. “I was doing treatment on Friday and Saturday as well. That’s why I decided to stay at home.”
He was getting treatment for an injury you f$%^ stain sons of bitches. God damn it.
Posted by monkey from here to Timbuktu on 01/27/09 at 08:10 AM ET
The team referring to “The Crosby Rule” and Osgood’s comments are sensational.
Read between the lines, bitches, this has galvanized our team and will provide motivation for winning another Cup. Thought we had a cup hangover? Well the anti-Wings ads and “The Crosby Rule” will act as a cold shower and gallon of expresso for the team.
All distractions have been left behind. The league has punitively punished Mr. Perfect and our Russian circus-master, all efforts will be made to punish the league and Bettman by having Lidstrom snatch yet another Stanley Cup from Li’l Gary’s grubby little paws in June.
And Ozzie. I could seriously kiss the dude (I won’t as I’m not gay like the ASS.G ceremonies) for saying what all Wings fans have been thinking. Think he’s going to play soft in net again? Not bloody likely. Elroy thrives on adversity and being told he’s second best. He now has a reason to be pissed and will play like a man possessed for the rest of the season. He’s only letting in one goal tonight at most, bitches.
Ladies and Gentlemen the Red Wings have officially punched-in for work. And they are pissed off. Woe to anyone who tries to stop them.

Let’s revisit Paul Kelly’s words from earlier this month: “We need to get our guys, their faces, their images, out there in the United States in ways we haven’t done so previously.”
M O N T R E A L IS NOT IN THE UNITED STATES, YOU F*CKTARD!!!!
(yes, I am yelling this. Capital letters, people.)
**not that I oppose the shrine circus taking place in Canada - hell, I love the idea - but don’t use the excuse that it’s to bring in more American based fans when you put the game outside of the US.

And 19 of you will recognize and understand the significance of the capitalization in the previous sentence.
Amazingly, I noticed Chief.
More from the Waddell piece:
Lidstrom addressed the issue of his ban from playing in tonight’s game in Columbus (7 p.m., FSN) for the first time after practising Monday.
“I thought it was the best move for the team,” Lidstrom said.
“I could’ve taken a game off in the middle of the season and maybe miss three days. I’ve taken the weekend off and it’s turned out to be six or seven days.
“For the Red Wings, I think it’s best I try to heal up.”
Lidstrom admitted he was angry over his treatment from the league despite his years of service.
“A little bit disappointing getting suspended, especially when you’ve been there a lot of times and the league has had access to me a lot of times,” said Lidstrom, who said he’s never been suspended in 17 years in the NHL and can’t even remember getting a school detention.
I for one, am very impressed with Tick Tock’s handling of the situation. He didn’t back down at all from fully supporting his players. Nick’s statements also make clear, everything is about the team.
Despite the pure absurdity of the entire suspension affair, it may serve to to further bond the team in their quest to repeat.
Ozzie, from the Waddell article: “. . . so it wouldn’t be good for the league if we won again would it?”
It certainly sounds as if the Wings too are getting a little ruffled by their treatment, as well they should. Thanks Gary, Ass.

you know what this stinks of to me? “the league” wasn’t happy that Brodeur and Luongo didn’t show up, but they didn’t have a rule to use against them. so they made one up. sounds to me like they wished, with hindsight, they had a rule in place…so they could try to force Luongo away from his pregnant wife.
disgusting.
at first I was half-way supporting the league with respect to Lidstrom, kind of on the “rules are rules” side of things. not at all on Datsyuk because he left the previous game early with an injury. now that I see that there actually is no written rule agreed upon by the league AND the players (they’re in business TOGETHER, remember?) I now see this for the crock of horse excrement it is.

It’s just one more thing the league uses against the Wings. I find it very telling that as this has gone on now for a couple years, more and more non-Wing fans are slowly starting to see this for themselves and admit it.
Just go out and stomp the life out of the Jackets tonight though and nobody will care.
You guys are right though—these are things the Wings will remember come March and April… (and May… And June).
Posted by Primis on 01/27/09 at 09:16 AM ET
I think Puck Daddy’s electronic excretion made my blood literally boil.
No one was asking for Datsyuk to take part in a skills competition, or Lidstrom to skate the morning practice. All they had to do was show up and promote the game, like Sidney Crosby and every “healthy” player did. Treating that responsibility as an option rather than an obligatory part of the job is far more damaging to the game’s integrity than two points won or lost for the Red Wings. It’s the kind of passive commitment that has, for years, hindered the League’s marketing aims.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I am pretty sure that the lineups for the skills competition were set before the last game before ASS.G. break. I remember thinking why on God’s green earth would the most electrifying stickhandler in the league not be asked to participate in the breakaway challenge or any other event? Unless the league was aware of his injury before the Phoenix game… which is impossible since it didn’t exist before then. Again, correct me if I’m wrong in all of this.
Either way, the collective amnesia in the MSM over the fact that Lids and Dats were actually INJURED and required TREATMENT is baffling. And the sentiment that a real game worth a real 2 points toward a real berth in the playoffs for a chance to compete for a real trophy is LESS important than the ASS.G. is ridiculous. What does Rory Fitzpatrick think of the ASS.G’s integrity????

Former Wings/Current Jackets fan here (I live in Columbus, and was a Wings fan until we got a team, after which time I followed the Wings in the playoffs until the Yzerman/Fedorov/Shanahan teams were gone, as those were the guys I cut my hockey teeth on).
While I won’t be sad if you guys don’t have NL and PD tonight for my own team’s sake, it is totally a bum rap. Rick Nash has been battling a sprained knee, and I so badly wanted him to skip the ASG, even though Gary (whose band of goal-reviewing and schedule goons love to screw us over continually, what with our eternal “distinct kicking motions” and our Friday-night-in-Columbus-Sunday-night-in-Vancouver road trips) would probably have stuck it to him as well.
If it helps, feel free to forfeit, per your other post. God knows we need the 2 points more than you do!

I’m more and more inclined to NOT vote in next year’s ASS.G if that farce of a voting system is still in place.
If the voting system is returned to the hands of the players/coaches/management with the fan voting accounting for perhaps 25% to 30% of the total vote, then MAYBE I’ll consider.
Otherwise, Gary.BlowMe.Ass can suck it.

I had a solid response to Wyshynski that got buried in the tripe his commenters and Lord knows if he read it but this whole thing is exasperating to me. Other leagues are a little better at hiding who they’re rooting for - the NHL… not so much.
Posted by HockeyJoe from Upstate New York on 01/27/09 at 04:03 PM ET
Integrity.
Integrity of The Game is why these “suspensions” are wrong. That is what Wyshynski and the trolls do not understand.
Injuries are part of The Game. Bad calls are part of The Game. Do injuries and bad calls affect the outcome of games, making the playoffs and playoff series? Absolutely, but they are part of The Game and that is why anyone who gripes about how their team was wronged by a bad call or injury is rightly labeled a whiner.
The NHL rulebook is part of The Game. The CBA is part of The Game. Did the suspensions of Rocket Richard, Dale Hunter or even Stillwoozie affect the outcome of games? Absolutely, but its in the rulebook and the CBA that certain on-ice conduct will lead to suspensions without pay.
What is not part of The Game is a little piece of shit with a Napoleonic complex making up rules as he goes along. He is keeping two players out of a game based on an “understanding”; not a rule, an “understanding”. And he is not applying this “understanding” equally, because he gave his baby boy a heads-up on how to avoid a “suspension”. (Note to trolls, that is called Equal Protection and it’s considered one of the fundemental rights in the U.S Constitution.)
Making up rules that have the potential to affect the outcome of a game messes with the integrity of The Game. As others have noted, F-ing Gary’s “understanding” has a the potential to affect playoff seedings. Anything that messes with playoff seeding affects the integrity of the game. After all, that is why there is a draft lottery, to avoid the appearance that teams are tanking games at the end of the season for draft position and the attendant affect on playoff seedings.
Making up rules that have the potential to affect the outcome of a game is why I would be writing this same exact post even if it were Dive players being “suspended” rather than Dats and The Perfect Human.
Too bad Wyshynski and the trolls can’t see through the red mist of hate how this affects the integrity of The Game.

Still, all it boils down to for me is that if Lidstrom and Datsyuk didn’t know they could avoid the suspension and Lidstrom had scheduled treatment, and they get suspended because they didn’t go talk to people for a few hours when any other player there can do it just as well…it’s a stupid thing to do. Pointless really, they’re still getting paid. Just fine them and let them play the real games.

Their injuries are so heinous that they can’t take a short plane ride to glad-hand with the big shots, yet a few days later they will be on the ice? Doesn’t make much sense to me. Your captain should have been a leader to the rest and followed the rules. Isn’t that what a leader does? The fact that you’re calling it the Crosby rule tells me that you really do recognize what your Captain should have done, and thats follow a true leader to the evenr since the NHL is bigger than just you messiah wings.

Everybody hates the Wings because they win?
Everybody hates the Patriots, yet I don’t hear Tom Brady complaining about it.
Everybody hates the Yankees and the Red Sox, yet I don’t hear Derek Jeter and David Ortiz complaining about it.
Yet a 2nd rate player in Chris Osgood has the balls (or, lack thereof, in this case) to complain about people wanting the Red Wings to lose. Wah. Guess what. One game won’t have an effect on whether or not they win the Stanley Cup. Guess what. They played in the Winter Classic this year. The league definitely put them in that game because they hate them, and want them to fail.
When did the author of A2Y get replaced by a 12 year-old? And to think I used to have some sort of respect for the guy.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
