Center Ice Online Working?

I’m reading some comments below from readers saying they can’t get the game in.  Try this.  It’s working for me. Getting the tv signal but the radio call.

2029 EST: minutes after I posted that the game froze, got an error message, closed Firefox (and explorer, tried that too).  Re-opened the portal and get some nancy brit boy telling me the page won’t load, the URL is invalid.

2039 EST:  just got definitive word from the wife.  “You’re not paying for that.”  Not good.

It needs a lot of work, and some direction would be nice too. Everything is hit and miss.

That would be the understatement of the year, Paul.

Great idea, horrible, disappointing execution.

What’s new.

Well, I went to the nhl.tv link, clicked the launch link, clicked the game, then the “semi-maximize” button and I’m watching the game!  awesome!

It sure wasn’t intuitive, but I managed to get it for the Sens game.  Chanuck is now watching it and doing work at the same time.  Nice feature, but I wish there was a way to maximize the screen.

Not working in any way, shape or form for me.

Crashes everything or I get the euro-guy voice.

I really hope this works out for you all! This whole project, if done rightly, would do well on the nhl. Maybe take some of the money scalpers put into the winter classic and upgrade this service??

As an aside: does CI online offer more games than the regular TV package? Are there more ‘hi def’ games? (ie: plug a laptop into an hd tv?)? Whats the cost? I spend $200 canadian for the season on rogers cable in canada.

I’m using Firefox. Here’s how it happened:
I clicked the top-left box in the Wings vs. Wild section. Only an asshat.
Next, I try clicking the same box, except for the Sens game. Sound comes through without video. I click the ‘semi-maximize’ button and so there was video.
So I tried the same process for the Wings game and had the same success.

another cool thing: http://alerts.yahoo.com/

I have it set up so every time there’s a score change in a Wings game I get a text message.  I’m in California this week and was on my way back to the hotel when I got a text that it was 1-0.  didn’t even realize they were playing until I got that message…

There were problems initially last year too, but they eventually worked out the kinks.  Maybe they’re testing it out during the pre-season so that they can work out any bugs by the time the season starts.  I’m sure it’ll improve.

I guess everyone is missing the bright RED words that says “Beta”.  Which to me means, this thing is still being tested, and since no one is paying for it and the NHL hasnt even publicized it yet, makes me think that you are all guinea pigs, albeit loud ones.

In the two days I have tried it, it got better tonight (to the point I was able to get a game going on my firefox).  Two nights ago, I was lucky to get one game, but tonight I watched almost the entire Flyers game.

I get the feeling tomorrow I will be able to get four games on the smaller boxes, whereas tonight I would get still pictures.

Until that thing doesnt say Beta, it isn’t pre-season, and I start to pay for this service, I am going to hold off on jumping off a cliff and doing the well honored tradition of hockey fan complaining.

Well thanks for the input, Petey… but it’s not like it’s Central High putting on a talent show, it’s the friggin’ NHL and I expect, at the minimum, better documentation and information.

Especially if they’re trying to entice me, Mr. consumer, into actually purchasing this.

Maybe this is old stuff but here’s what I think I know…  feel free to correct me if I have something wrong:

The URL http://www.nhl.tv/team/ gives you the “Click here to launch the NHL Video Portal” screen.  Avoid this page and go directly to the aforementioned portal at http://www.nhl.tv/team/console.  Once there, the Center Ice tab gives you access to the games.

For the 2nd night in a row I never got this to work in Firefox, only getting as far as the brit error message, but I did not try the semi-maximize trick.  In IE it took a few refreshes but I did finally get it to work.  Twice in IE one of the games was marked as blacked out but after a refresh it was available.

After all this, I never did see the Wings game because I had to make a hospital visit.  But I’m watching EDM/TOR now…  video is smooth, and quality is what I would expect of an internet feed…  certainly not TV quality, can’t always see the puck or easily read the time clock on screen, but an acceptable way to watch the game otherwise.

Teamdub, guess you dont understand the point of a “beta”.

And since I havent seen this thing advertised yet by the NHL, than maybe they arent trying to entice you, but are going through the testing phase.  This thing has been “live” for what, two days now with a larger base of users than IslandersTV, so I imagine it is gonna take fine-tuning.

I can only imagine what it must have been like if hockey fans were there when Orville Wright flew for the first time?  “WHHHHAAAAT IS THAT???? You only went FIFTY FEET!!!!  You SUCK!!!!”  =)

I will reserve my bitching time on the last days of preseason if this thing is like it is now.  But I have noticed improvements overnight. At least I was able to watch a game tonight.

Oh, and I prefer to save my bitching for the damn instigator rule and fans who walk in the aisles during play.  And those idiots who yell SHOOOOOOTTT at the teams during the powerplay

If it’s any consolation, I tried literally 30-40 times in FF and IE combined. Initially it crashed both, then just IE, then FF would display the empty screens and the annoying euro-guy, IE wouldn’t display any controls whatsoever and if I tried to navigate to the Center Ice tab it still crashed immediately. Eventually FF relented with the semi-maximize trick, never could figure out how to fullscreen it.

Hope the hospital visit was minor.

Hey, TeamDub…  except for the end result, it sounds as though we had similar experiences.  I worked on it for about 40 minutes tonight, mostly in FF, before I finally got it to work in IE.  Last night I spent well over an hour, trying both IE and FF to no avail.  I guess we’ll see what tomorrow brings…

Trying to save time and words, I didn’t describe the hospital thing well.  First, it wasn’t me…  I went to visit my future mother-in-law who just had hip replacement.  Second, it’s really a convalescent home, not a hospital, though you couldn’t tell the difference from the inside of the rooms.  I didn’t mean to mislead, and I appreciate your words of concern.

Wednesday video update:  Today I accessed Center Ice video without any problem — 1st attempt in both IE and FF.  I’ve had both browsers open at the same time throughout the MTL vs. NYI first period…  Video quality in Firefox is significantly better than in IE. In FF I can see the puck always and read the ads on the boards.  I can’t say that for the IE video.  (BTW, I’m using a 5MB/sec cable internet connection.}

If I couldn’t have my Center Ice on cable TV and the FF quality here is what I’d see all season, I’d seriously consider it.
