Confirmed: Maltby and Wings Reached 3-Year Deal Before Playoffs Started

Updated 1431 CST with quotes from Maltby below

The worst-kept secret in Detroit?  Kirk Maltby’s contract extension, or re-signing, whichever you prefer.

DETROIT The Detroit Red Wings recently re-signed forward Kirk Maltby to a three-year contract. It happened before the playoffs, but both sides decided it was best not to talk publicly about the deal—until now.
Detroit hosts the San Jose Sharks tomorrow in a best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal that is tied at two games apiece.

Maltby has one assist in ten playoff games this season and 28 points in 129 career postseason games, all with the Red Wings since 1996. He helped Detroit win Stanley Cups in 1997, ‘98 and 2002.

More from Detroithockey.net,

The deal will pay Maltby $2.65 million.

Maltby has been with the Red Wings since 1996, when he was acquired for Dan McGillis from the Edmonton Oilers. He was thrilled to be remaining with the team.

“Definitely happy, extremely happy,” Maltby said. “Proud, and so fantastic we could get this done. I wanted to stay here. That was the ultimate goal.”

As Red Wings general manager Ken Holland does not negotiate contracts during the playoffs, this deal was reached before the start of the postseason.

“We worked it out a few days before the playoffs began, and not that my signing would be much of a distraction heading into the playoffs, but we knew the media would find out about it sooner or later,” Maltby said.

That better be 2.65M for the life of the contract and not per year!

Eh, I was actually looking for a breakdown of who the Wings have locked in for the coming seasons, and for how long.  I hate to admit it, but I ignore all contract talk until about this time of the year…very little clue who this year’s UFAs are.

This is a key signing.  I couldn’t care less how many points Maltby puts up.  Same for Draper.  It’s not their role, and they chip in big goals when we need them, so that’s good enough.  They are invaluable to the Wings.

I’m happy with how next year’s 1-2-3 punch is shaping up:

Datsyuk/Zetterberg
Filpulla/Hudler
Draper/Maltby

Even the fourth pairing of Lang and Bertuzzi might score once a while, delivering the proverbial kick in the ‘nads at opportune moments like Wednesday night.

Lang won’t be back.  Unless he’s willing to take quite the paycut.  Reality is that there is better out there for the money that the Enigma is making now.

There is far better (on the whole) for half the money Lang is making.
