Crazy Czech: Wings Need “One Timer On The Power Play”

Out of the mouths of the insane, only in this case our sociopathic goaltender sounds fairly reasonable.

‘‘We have lots of passers, lots of skilled players who can pass the puck, that’s why it wouldn’t hurt to get one player who can have one-timer on the power play, something like that,’’ Hasek said.

Not a bad article from Helene St. James appearing in tomorrow’s Free Press.  It’s becoming pretty clear to everyone that Ken Holland’s plan to stand pat (and we all know that’s what he intended if the lineup was intact) is falling by the way side pretty damn quickly.

Dominik is crazy, but he’s also a smart man who speaks his insane mind.  He’s right—you know that the PP needs a one-timer when the most effective one-time play has been Nicklas Lidstrom skating up the left side, a la Steve Yzerman, to rip shots from the faceoff dot.

Didn’t Dom break his stick over some guy’s head when he was playing forward in a Czech beer league?

Maybe he’s the one-timer we use.

Hudlum needs to step up.

I think they should try changing the PP units. Break up the top PP unit to spread the wealth. I think Dats and Z play better together 5-on-5 anyway—they might get the value they’ve been looking for splitting them up on the man advantage.

Wings need someone to pull the freaking trigger, period!!

Sammy, at times (especially last year), has shown a tendency to shoot from anywhere—although you have to wonder if he could hit a barn door with his shot.  But that hasn’t been the case so much this year.

You have to keep in mind players TOI, but look at the top fifteen players in number of shots this season, through 58 games(NHL.com):

1 Henrik Zetterberg 257
2 Pavel Datsyuk     193
3 Mikael Samuelsson 185
4 Daniel Cleary     161
5 Nicklas Lidstrom   150
6 Brian Rafalski   126
7 Johan Franzen     118
8 Tomas Holmstrom   115
_________________________________________________
9 Jiri Hudler     86
10 Niklas Kronvall   86
11 Valtteri Filppula 84
12 Brett Lebda     80
13 Kris Draper     80
14 Tomas Kopecky   54
15 Chris Chelios   50

Homer is averaging just a hair under 2 shots per game.  Hudler, under 1.5.

You can see that the top line of Hank, Pav, Homer, along with D pair Nick and Raffi have taken 841 shots, so average 14.5 over the 58 games—nearly half the team average of 34.4/g.

No wonder Babs has been preaching to shoot more.  Kinda hard to score is this league if they wont try to put the puck on net.

Wing’s need a shooter in the worst way, especially since their #4 shooter is out!!!  No one left to shoot.

Oh—Dom’s right (in his psychopathic way). Somebody shoot the freaking puck (somebody besides Sammy!!).

It’s seemingly easy to assume that Hasek is right when it comes to shooting.  I’ve tried to read between the lines and I’m guessing that he means we need to shoot more on the power plays.  Wings lead the league in SOGs but that’s a cumulative total.  I think Hasek wants more SOGs on the PP.

The Wings are almost too patient on the PP lately. There doesn’t appear to be much urgency. They seem content to cycle the puck back out to the point and “reset” rather than firing rebounds quickly back on net. The problem with this strategy is that it also allows the goalie and defense to reset. Maybe they need to approach every PP—regardless of the score—like they’re down a goal or two late and need to catch up.

YZ: you got that right.
Babs seems to go into the game telling the players to set up in the corners and just pass it around.
Then after the game he tells them to shoot more.

My only positive outlook is he has not exercised his option for the extra year.
