I guess since every newspaper within 50 miles of an NHL city is doing a “Chelios is really frigging old” story, the Detroit News decided to jump on board.

And in the Wings’ last victory, a 2-1 nailbiter over the Dallas Stars a week ago, there was no hesitation from Babcock about which defensemen to put on the ice in the final minute of the game.
Over the boards came Nick Lidstrom, the team captain, and Chelios.
“The thing I know about Cheli is, when the game’s on the line, he knows where to be, he knows what to do and he’s gonna make the right decision 99 percent of the time,” said Babcock, who is 15 months younger than Chelios.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Babcock’s comments indicate that he IS in tune with his players as individuals. One of the knocks on him is that he ignores his players’ individual strengths and weaknesses, resulting in ineffective lines & matchups. Maybe that is the case, and maybe Babs is looking for lines which bring out even more in his individual players. At some point, he must stick with what works.
