Current Roster? Uncle Mike Likes It

Have you been wondering today, for several consecutive hours, what The Literate One thinks of all this trade talk?  I know you have.  And I’m here for you.  He’s not liking it.  What he does, apparently, like is the team as-is.

Shawn P. Roarke

“Bert was a great addition to our team, but he’s gone two months later. That’s a pretty expensive deal. I think it makes it hard.”

Babcock also joked that he would remind Holland of the Matthias deal every day until the Feb. 26 trade deadline – and the ensuing temptation to make another big deal – passes.

“I’m going to grind him for the next month every single day, as much as I can,” Babcock said, laughing.

It is hard to argue with Coach Babs (especially when you have to think twice about what he said).  You already have the best team in the league:

OVERALL 41-13-5 (1st in NHL, lead DAL by 12 pts)
CONFERENCE 35-11-4 (1st, lead DAL by 12 pts)DIVISION 7-8-2   (1st lead NAS by 21 pts)
HOME 21-6-2
AWAY 20-7-3
LAST 10 6-3-1

So the issue is, do you mortgage your future in the hope that your rental player(s) adds that extra missing ingredient (which you are not really sure you need in the first place)?

Would it be a good thing to have somebody willing to shoot the puck on net—I believe so, love to see a power forward in the “Winged Wheel” that likes to shoot (accurately) more than pass.

Will the organization pay the steep price in this “sellers market” to get that player—and maybe for only a few months?  Not, apparently, if Babs has his way.  And it really is hard to argue against that position.  What would the rental bring to the table, at what cost, and would he “fit in”?

Despite the recent slump, the Wings numbers are:
.737 win% (1st),
3.20 G/G (2nd),
2.14 GA/G (1st),
21.0% PP (3rd),
84.2% PK (8th),
34.6 S/G (1st),
SA/G 23.6 (1st).

Am I worried about about Sasquatch and that team of physical players in a seven game series—Yup.  Will one or two “physical” rentals make a difference—I don’t see how.  DOWNEY can!! But a scoring power forward (which I think the Wings need most)—that player can even the top two lines and maybe keep Sasquatch from setting his sights on Z or Dats quite so much.  But as far as changing the dynamic against the Poultry—it won’t matter who is on the ice for the Wings, they are going to get run—alot.

It’ll be interesting to watch the trade deadline.  But I wouldn’t bet the farm that the Wings make a “huge splash”—not for a steep asking price—unless the Wings want to trade some current roster spot for an upgrade (Hudler maybe)?
