Datsyuk: Scrawny No Longer

He may be “past his prime”, according to John Buccigross and any idiot Pens blogger with access to a computer in between PE and the day’s first recess, but as the Boston Globe found out...his conditioning is as good as any player’s in the league.

The Wings’ workout room is located next to the main dressing room. Several of the Bruins have remarked on Pavel Datsyuk’s strength, so I took a peek at part of the center’s workout. First, while lying on the reverse incline bench, Datsyuk ripped off a string of situps while gripping a 45-pound plate to his chest. Minutes later, Datsyuk took two 45-pound plates, held them over his head, and swung his torso in circles. It’s all about core strength, and given the glimpse at his workout, it’s not surprising that Datsyuk is one of the league’s strongest players on the puck.

Some people seem to think that all the Byngs qualify Datsyuk as a soft player, but the guy knows how to hit, and rob him the puck is one of the hardest tasks in the League.

I’m looking foward to see him go head-to-head against Lidstrom in Vancouver.

I mean, I guess being merely a point per game player right now despite his history of slow starts means that he’s not really pulling his weight, but we all know that you can’t put all the emphasis on stats.  I believe I’m qualified to judge the intangibles of his play to this point in the season, considering I’ve seen every Red Wings game except the season opener.

Datsyuk is f*cking awesome.  He’s the hardest working forward on the Wings and has done nothing so far to fall out of contention for a third consecutive Selke trophy.  He sees the ice as well as anybody and knows how to thread the needle with a pass.  He’s a beast with the puck and slippery on the boards.

The thing that always makes me giggle is how many opposing players are required to get the puck away from him. No sooner do I mutter something like, “No, he can’t possibly...” and then, whatever it was I was thinking he couldn’t possibly, he goes ahead and does. As of now, he’s the least of the team’s worries.

If Dats shoots a bit more and gets off the perimeter his PPG pace will increase. The games where he puts up numbers are usually those that he’s not dancing along the boards, but rather coming in through the slot. He’ll be the guy to take our injured team on his shoulders. He’s just got to stay healthy.

Giggle is perhaps among the least manly words in the english language, but the perfect descriptor for that.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve laughed watching a Red Wings game to have my wife ask “What did Datsyuk do now?”

I usually don’t jump into the fray between the trolls and the “19”, as I don’t perceive much utility in the exercise.

However, I am often left to wonder, just how miserably boring the trolls’ existence is if they, apparently, have nothing better to do with their time.

Having stated my two-cents, here is some [sickening] news from Khan(!):

The flu bug finally is hitting the dressing room, as two more defensemen, Brian Rafalski and Niklas Kronwall, were ill and missed practice. Jonathan Ericsson, who missed the last game because of the flu, also did not practice. . .

Left wing Brad May, who didn’t skate, was scheduled to see team doctors later this afternoon . . . Babcock said May could be ready for Saturday’s game in Toronto.

Chris Osgood will start against the Bruins.

They skated with the same forward lines they used the last game, with the exception of Ville Leino replacing May:

Bertuzzi-Datsyuk-Holmstrom
Cleary-Zetterberg-Williams
Draper-Helm-Eaves
Leino-Abdelkader-Maltby

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:
