Deadline Day On Speed: Your Wing Bloggers

Sometimes, when I’m alone and it’s raining, I think I’m actually Pete at Yzerman Is God.  The way he writes is the way I speak, and I dig that.

Speaking of extensions, there is no fu*&ng way we get Hossa and extend him. It’s just not going to happen. Unless we trade Zetterberg, or Lidstrom, or Datsyuk, or Rafalski. You just can’t have five guys making 6M+. Take your pick. I’ll go with the four we got. Same argument goes for why we can’t trade for Jokinen.

Yes, I edited the F bomb out.  Many of you have written and asked about the lack of colorful language here at A2Y. It would seem natural that the occasional effectively placed mother&*&*r would have a home here.  Typically, I find that term can be used in most any situation.  I have a variety of inflections and I love them all. But here?  I’ll be honest.  My daughters read this blog sometimes and, well, you get the idea.

But Pete?  He has no governor and that’s cool with me.

Baroque at Hockeytown Todd’s?  Much more deliberate.  Each word seems to be considered, weighed, typed slowly then checked to see how it fits with the rest of the sentence.  Does it detract from the message? Does it place the right emotional accent? Is the verb active, passive, actually—you know—spelled correctly?

That is why I’m worried that Holland might do something because of what another team does or because of injuries that he might regret later. A trade does not magically become a better deal because it is the deadline when it was a bad trade a week ago, and I know he knows that, but the auction mentality is powerful enough to make smart people bid higher and higher until they find themselves really hoping someone else matches their bid because they were so focused on winning the bidding that they didn’t realize how high the numbers had gotten.

Actually, with that run-on sentence Baroque does sound a little like me.  I like run-ons.  Like mother&*&r, they too can be effective.

Then you have George.  George Malik.  Thoughtful, eloquent, verbose and hockey-smart.  Logical to my reactionary.  I know there are certain things that will get George going, and I admit sometimes I write a post and chuckle—not giggle like a Dive fan, but chuckle like a guy chuckles—knowing George is going to spin up.  Attendance, John Hahn, Tenacious D—all subjects I know George can’t resist.

George’s real strong suit is breaking down what the Wings say into a digestable form, paraphrasing where necessary.

Holland says that much of what constitutes a deadline deal is the result of the careful preparation that the Wings’ pro scouts and management has prepared in anticipation of the goings-on—in the same sense that fundamentals are to goaltending. You prepare, you practice, and in the end, it comes down trusting your instincts.

George has literally changed the way I blog because he’s much better at getting the stories you like to read and pointing you to them.  I used to do that but when I’d see Malik doing it better and faster, that would make me sad so I quit it quick.

Christy at Behind the Jersey says a lot of the things I think, but am fearful to express because I don’t like it when I talk like a chick.  When Lidstrom got hurt, I think I said this:  “MotherF*)K.”  Notice, you don’t always need the “er.”  Christy?

While trying to skate to the bench, he looked like a little calf trying to walk for his first time.

Chicky, but accurate.

Gorilla Crouch’s Dave is a little like Pete at YIG, only Dave spreads the wealth to a few more Michigan sports.  Analytical when necessary, emotional if the situation calls for it.  He’s everyblogger.

Let’s just say in a city where Bob Probert, Joey Kocur and Darren McCarty are folk heroes Aaron Downey stamped his citizenship papers in Hockeytown. He’s officially one of ours from here on out. The fact he went on to include a comment about how they played hockey in Roman times only makes him more likeable. We don’t expect him to be a historian, just to understand his role. He clearly does.

Matt Saler and his crew at On The Wings are the kings (and queens) of the game recap.  Again, something I used to do but it made me tired and cranky so I quit that too.  Plus they nail it at OTW.

The recaps are great and we all appreciate them.  But what I like best is when Matt gets pissed off.  And, like with George, I’d be lying a little bit if I said I didn’t try to push his buttons from time to time.

Dion Phaneuf’s vicious hit to Tomas Kopecky’s head was the pinnacle of the night’s nasty physicality, but Jarome Iginla made a nice showing of classlessness with a childish crosscheck/two-handed slash on Mikael Samuelsson late in the second period. I hear all the vaunted language of respect that is constantly used to describe Iginla and I’d like to believe it. It’s just that every time I see him play, I find reason to respect him less.

So there you have it, a sampling of Wing blogs for you to choose from should a trade go down today.  All will have opinions, and there’s a good chance I’ll cut, paste and plagiarize every one of them.

Because, motherf&*kers, that’s how I roll.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
