Deadline Eve Odds and Ends

A few little ditties to point you to this evening as you all grapple with the sniffles and the tummy aches and whatever ailments will keep you home from work tomorrow.

Dallas seems to be mentioned in every rumor out there. Why do you care? Because Bubba’s uncle is only six points back, even though the Wings have two games in hand.

Scott Burnside

Sources told ESPN.com Monday night that Chicago is believed to have made an offer for Richards, but the Blackhawks were told there was another team involved in trade discussions and the Lightning had to mull over the other offer before they could respond to the Blackhawks’ interest.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are believed to have strong interest in Richards, looking to add a top-flight center to play with Rick Nash, but the NHL source said he believes it’s another team. “I think it’s Dallas,” he said.

They’re feeling it in Dallas.  They’re sensing the West isn’t quite the two-team race we all thought it would be, and that they’ve joined the Poultry and the Wings as tri-favorites.  Thy’ll make a move tomorrow, a big one.

Craig Custance at the Atlanta Journal Contitution breaks down the likely destinations for the inevitably jettisoned Thrashers, and feels the Wings could very well be the right fit for Marian Hossa.

He’d be a great fit for: Detroit. Rival Colorado just got better by signing Forsberg, and adding Hossa would allow the Red Wings to keep up. Among the interested are Montreal, San Jose, Anaheim and Ottawa.

Yes, Craig. The Wings are interested.  Yes, they’ll make a strong pitch—if they haven’t already.  But, not because Denver signed Floppa.  Once again they’ve stocked up on offense, and once again they have nothing whatsoever that can stop even the most mediocre opponent.  In other words, Ken Holland is not going to make a move to offset anything the Dive do…because the Dive aren’t making the playoffs.

Well Andy?  Looks like the timetable’s been moved up on the captain’s return.  Andy Strickland, a Klessel groupie who seems to have a little obsession with bashing the Wings, cited his highly-placed sources again this week when he said Lidstrom would be out for two months.  And again, he’s proven himself a bitter Blues tool.

ESPN

On Friday, Detroit coach Mike Babcock said that Lidstrom’s timetable had been moved up: “He’s two weeks [away]—max.” This is encouraging to those who are awaiting his return for the fantasy playoffs, so just hold tight if that’s you. If you need a stopgap for these two weeks, Lidstrom’s teammate (and name mate) Niklas Kronwall is widely available and will be leaned upon for production until Lidstrom and Brian Rafalski return.

It’s a fantasy hockey column, in case you were wondering about the Kronwall is “widely available” comment—as I was.  And no, Andy, that’s not the last time I’ll be bringing that up.

Khan(!) confirms Lidstrom’s timetable, and the fact that Strickland is—in fact—a tool.

Update from practice Monday in Edmonton: Wings general manager Ken Holland said defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom (sprained MCL) should begin skating later this week and estimated that he could return in 10 to 14 days from today. Despite persistent Internet rumors that Lidstrom has a concussion, Holland and coach Mike Babcock both categorically denied that claim.

“Zero, none,’’ Babcock said of a possible concussion. “He got dazed.’‘

Said Holland: “There’s a chance he can skate by the end of the week, and then you’re hoping he’s a week to 10 days away (from when he first skates). I still think he’s 10 to 14 days away from today.’‘

Big day tomorrow. Rest up, or don’t if it means it’s easier for you to appear sick.
