Did You Say The Wings Would Be Sellers? Don’t Be A Dumbass

Seriously. Did you really think there was even a possibility the Detroit Red Wings would be anything other than potential buyers at the deadline? According to Craig Custance, the best hockey writer in Detroit, the thought has never crossed the mind of one Tick Tock Kenny Holland.
There has been speculation the Red Wings might deal one of their potential restricted free agents to clear room for signing Marian Hossa and Johan Franzen. So we asked G.M. Ken Holland: Any chance the Wings will be sellers? “No chance,” Holland told SportingNews.com. “We’re going to give this team every opportunity to be as good as we want to be. We’ll worry about the 2009-10 season as soon as this one is over.”
A couple things. Holland could be lying to us. You know it and so do I. And, stop me if you’ve heard me say this before, we frigging dig that. Lie to us about injuries, trades, standing pat, UFAs and UFOs. Do. What. You. Have. To. Do.
Secondly. I had a second point but I forgot it. I’m serious. Dammit. Huh, well. If he’s not lying and he’s standing by this team? Another good move.
We trust you Kenny. It’s your world big boy.

These memory lapses should not concern you Chief. It tends to happen after 40. If age does not get you, the alcohol will. Ha Ha.

Reminds me of last year when everyone outside of Wings fans were claiming we needed to make a huge deal at the deadline if we wanted a chance at the cup…hmmm.

Hockey’s Future has ranked what it thinks are the top 20 Wings prospects.
Shockingly, Leino is rated 8th and Helm is rated 11th. Not surprisingly, Larsson is rated way above Howard.

The salary cap and all the free agency stuff add a whole new angle to building and maintaining a hockey team, and I sure don’t know all the angles of it. With all the talk I thought they had to make a deal. Sort out a few issues, play consistent, stay healthy and prepare for the playoffs.

Just wondering if anyone thinks that Holland’s thinking may change if they have a poor couple of games before the deadline. If we lose to SJ, LA, and the Preds before next Wednesday, would he feel more inclined to make a deal?

Nope. Holland isn’t one to panic. Worst that happens is Ozzy does not start the playoffs and Cheli sits.

Actually, Nate, that’s the best that could happen. ![]()
No offense to Cheli, but it’s time to hang up the skates. And if Ozzie’s mask, pads and skates get hung up at the same time, so much the better.

The only thing the Wings are selling at the trade deadline this year are tickets for the first round.

Heh, true enough. We’ll say that’s the most drastic thing that might happen.
And its not that a trade absolutely 100% wont happen, but if it happens, it wont be because of 2 or 3 games just prior to the deadline. It’ll be something that’s been in the works for a couple weeks prior to.

I prefer Matthew Wuest’s rankings rather than HF. That guy is closer to the prospects than anyone else.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.
