Drew Sharp’s Nemesis

Foiled again. By now you’ve all read Drew Sharp’s column from last week suggesting the Wings should stop at fiscally nothing to lure JSG away from his comfortable Disney surroundings.
The bidding might reach $5 million a year. It doesn’t matter. Get it done and the Wings remain serious Cup contenders for at least the next two years.
Might reach 5 mil Drew? Might? Sharp says quite a bit. Lots of words. Except two: salary cap. Have no fear, though, little Drew. Spector’s here to help you…again.
The argument that the 30-year-old Giguere, who’s eligible for UFA status on July 1, would benefit the Wings long term than the 42-year-old Hasek is a good one, but doesn’t make any financial sense for Detroit.
The Wings presently have just over $31 million committed to next season’s payroll for 14 players, and at first glance it would appear they have plenty of room to absorb Giguere’s anticipated $5-6 million per season salary.
However, the Wings also have to consider re-signing defensemen Chris Chelios, Mathieu Schneider and Danny Markov and forwards Todd Bertuzzi, Robert Lang and Kyle Calder.
Take Lang and Calder out of the equation and you still have a blue line to deal with and money that needs to be spent, money Ryan Smyth is going to need to be happy and healthy in our little town. Money that is not going to end up with JSG. He’s going to get his, but that check’s going to be bigger than the Wings could afford and it’s going to have a Duckie icon on it.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
