The Attendance Dilemma even has the reputable mainstreamers sniffing glue. Bob Duff, who typically keeps a level head for the Windsor Star, has bought into the Euro-conspiracy.
Study the history of this so-called Hockeytown and one thing you’ll learn is this: They don’t take a hankering to foreigners.
When things went wrong for the Wings in the 1990s, it was always Sergei Fedorov’s fault. Hasek and Datsyuk took much of the heat for last season’s playoff departure.
And…
Whether they come on four wheels or two blades, the Motor City won’t pay for imports.
Hasek and Datsyuk took much of the blame for last year’s playoff loss? I’m sorry. What? Says who?
Peel another layer back Bob. Yes, Datsyuk took his fair share of abuse due to the postseason “failures” of his past/youth. But last year?
Yes, Sergei Fedorov was a lightning rod for criticism. But so was Paul Coffey and so was Manny Legace. But, see, whether the fans hated them or liked them, they still paid to see ‘em.
I’m not gonna buy into this anti-Euro garbage. It’s a crock and it’s a crutch. Detroit doesn’t “take a hankering to foreigners”? Dammit Bob. You’re right. Hockeytown hated them some Russians didn’t they? Larionov? Run out of town. Fetisov? Despised. Kozlov? Well, he took his fair share of abuse, but he was a streaky little bastard. And Wing fans don’t like streaky. Almost forgot about Konstantinov: hated, right Bob? Not to mention all those Canadiens, since they’re technically “foreigners”.
I’m not talking about attendance anymore. I mean it this time.

I may be setting myself up for abuse here, but being a born-and-bred native of southeastern Michigan (call it Metro Detroit if you will), I always thought we were more like Canadians than other Americans. Must be something about driving SOUTH to get to Canada. My sister thinks we’re honorary Canadians, and that Washtenaw, Wayhe, Oakland and Macomb counties are ripe for annexation.

I think Duff just called all Wings fans and all Michigan people biggots. Classic Canadian snobbery. Up yours, Duff!

@ AndrewFromAnnArbor:
Canada and the US are both really large countries. A resident of Wyoming or Montana probably has a lot more in common with a resident of Alberta than either would have with someone in Toronto or New York City. And it’s even more difficult to tell a Canadian and a Minnesotan or Yooper apart from each other. ![]()
And annexation of the Great Lakes region would hopefully help with the issues of conservation of the water resources, since Wisconsin and Indiana are being stupid about it. Plus the hockey coverage would improve!

Right on with that one, Baroque. As an unofficial Yooper — a decades long resident but considered unofficial by most “real” Yoopers because I wasn’t born here — I have been asked several times at conferences and such, mostly by folks of the southern persuasion, if I was Canadian. (If I were Canadian? Whatever.)
Apparently they think I have acquired some sort of accent… of course, I know in my heart that they are actually the ones with an accent!

You mean on a team dominated by European players, it’s more likely the fans will blame a European player? who the F else is there to blame?
simple common sense. you can’t blame American players if there aren’t any. ditto Canadians.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Seems pretty stupid to be talking about any large American city not “taking a hankering” (which doesn’t even make sense, the illiterate moron) to foreigners…considering that Chicago has more Polish residents than any city in Poland but Warsaw, and Detroit has a large population of Arab descent, and San Francisco has many residents that trace their heritage to Asia, and Miami has a ton of Hispanic residents, etc. etc. etc…..
Americans are a nation of mutts.
(The entire human race is, actually.)
