“Faux”...Interesting. Do You Use “Faux”?

Well, that was quite the day eh? The league came out and tried the “intent to blow” reach around. That didn’t work, because it’s a crock. But they tried, and now they’re even a bigger piss pot than they were before. You know our league is the absolute laughing stock of the sporting world when Tony Kornheiser is using it as a punchline because of the May no-goal.
The night it happened, we said it would be interesting to note how various people covered this farce. In my opinion, how various bloggers reacted said a lot about their character and their product.
For instance, it took a certain “national” blogger a matter of just a few hours, or even minutes, to use this as an opportunity to rub another shaft job in the faces of Wing fans. Then he spent the rest of the day defending his biases, dashing off emails or taking his case to Twitter. Yep, boy. Nothing like stating your case in 140 or less. Oh, and hey…
Would you use the phrase “et al” in conversation? If so, how would that work? Who does that? Am I being indignant, or is that just “faux indignation”? Curious about that one too. If you’re drinking some beers, watching a game or even a stripper, have you ever turned to your boys and said, “you know I’m really tired of the faux indignation?”
I guess so. “Faux” objectivity. “Faux” neutrality. “Faux” standards. Fee, Fi, Faux, Flat Out Joke.
The real bloggers, the ones who actually care more about what they write then whether their drooling readership gets a giggle, didn’t find time to take potshots. Not at Wing fans anyway.
Am I indignant about this? Yes. Is it “faux”? Well, if “faux” means “fake”, like I think it does? Hell no. That blogger used a shitty situation as an opportunity to pile it on. Screw him. And then he comes over here and tries to defend it, rambling on and on..whatever.
Dan Rosen, at NHL.com, has a job and gets a paycheck. He works for a living and sometimes when you do, you have to follow orders like it or not. You can argue, but not for long, not if you want to stay employed.
So he wrote this article. It’s a pathetic joke and it should be Gary Bettman’s ultimate manifesto. But it’s not Rosen’s fault. He did his job. Mike Murphy? A little harder to take. Now we’re talking about a guy who is compromising. Now we’re talking about a guy with something on his chin. Now we’re talking about a Bettman lackey and he should feel dirty that he actually uttered some of the crap that left his mouth yesterday.
“The way we’ve always handled it and the way we will continue to handle it until we have a procedure change is the referees call on the ice stands. He sees the shot and he sees the save and doesn’t see the puck in the net and kills the play or blows the whistle,” Murphy said. “It’s not when you hear the whistle blow, it’s when he intends to blow the whistle. There is a little bit of a gray area there between when he intends and when the whistle sounds.
“In this case Dennis LaRue was clear with what he saw and clear with what he interpreted and that was, ‘I had killed the play before the puck entered the net.’ When we scrutinize it and go through video review I think everybody would concede that the puck was in the net, and Dennis didn’t see that unfortunately.”
“We will continue to handle it….procedure change…intends to blow…gray area…intends..”. Blah, blah, blah…STFU.
One sentence, maybe two, or a few more, would have sufficed. “Dennis LaRue has been suspended. We are immediately revising the way situations like this are handled, with replay, on ice officials and the ‘war room.’ We boned this because Gary Bettman’s oversight of this league has led it straight into the toilet, but who cares, the owners make their money, bloggers on Yahoo get to laugh it off and the only ones who really suffer are the fans but in the long run who really gives a flying foxtrot about them because they’re saps who keep buying tickets, keep paying for center ice, keep drinking our kool aid. Idiots. How’s that Gary?”
Is that “faux”, et al?
And while we’re at it, you know, while I’m feeling it a little…I expected the trolls to come out of the woodwork yesterday. In fact, I had no doubt that the minute the Dallas game ended the same idiots would be here, and they were. They were expected and easy to deflect.
But if you’re a Wing fan and you came here yesterday to tell me this is overblown, or that the way we react to things is an “embarrassment”. Awesome. Get out. One of you is a friend of A2Y and a loyal Wing fan, and I blasted you unnecessarily yesterday. I apologize and you know who you are.
I’ll remind anyone else who cares or has read this far: I don’t do this for clicks, for money, recognition, attribution or for any other reason than this: I’m a Detroit Red Wing fan and I like to write about them, and I like to give 19 other fanatical bastards like me a place to do the same.
Everyone else? Suck it. Stay if you want, but never forget that this blog is for Wing fans. Paul has never asked me to change a single thing about what we do here. Not once. We’re not changing and we’re not compromising. We’re not selling out and this is who we are.
Deal with it or leave. But if you think you can use scenarios like this as an opportunity to pull out phrases like “tin foil hat” and giggle at the expense of people I respect, friends I’ve made here over three years? You’re going to get slammed. Not once. Repeatedly, until I’m bored with it. Again, don’t like the redundancy? Don’t frigging read it.
Would that be “faux”? No? I didn’t think so.

Every morning I thank the SBJ for this place. It’s one of the few places that I am not the craziest person in the room. So to speak.
Chief you do speak the truth, and for the record I never read Puck Fatty. The guy is a total douche. I’m in for the long haul because A2Y is my favorite nut house.

Wings got hosed for sure on that call and everyone knows it. But remember Z’s tying goal against SJ a few weeks ago? The one that he knocked in from under Nabokov’s pads? I don’t know if the Detroit feed showed this but on the SJ feed you could see the ref bringing the whistle to his lips to blow the play dead while Z was still skating towards Nabokov. So you win some and you lose some, and that’s pretty much the way it’s always been in the NHL.
Posted by Bob on 11/20/09 at 08:01 AM ET
But this wasn’t the same type of play Bob. May shot the puck, Auld failed to make the save, the puck went in the net, and then the Faux Referee blew the play dead. This call sets in stone the precedent that a Referee can wave a goal for no reason whatsoever.
Posted by Spocks Brain on 11/20/09 at 08:16 AM ET
Bob,
You’re missing the point. It shouldn’t be ‘you win some you lose some’. It should be ‘you win if you win’ not ‘you lose if a referee happens to not see what millions of those across the continent can clearly see’. It should be that the game is called appropriately, and when it’s not, some logical, reasonable measures can set things straight, for all teams.
Are we pissed it happened to our Wings? Oh yeah. Would we laugh our asses off if it happened to Anaheim, the Dive, or Pittsburgh? You bet. It makes you queasy just thinking of even being the beneficiary of such a travesty.
The whole point of yesterday’s argument is that the system and those in charge of it are inept. We don’t believe it’s directed at us. We believe that a referee made a wrong call, and was too stubborn to wound his own pride to make a mistake right. We understand the refs are human. We’ll be OK with it if, instead of pretending to be infallible, they can suck it up and set the record straight. We all do this on a daily basis. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to get rid of the ‘gray area’ and put in place a mechanism that would allow the proper call to stand.

It cracks me up how many people that are not Wings fans—and hate the Wings—come to this blog to complain about it and the Wings and their fans. And it really cracks me up when the nature of the complaint is that we’re “unfair.”
This is a GD Wings blog. What do you expect? If you aren’t a Wings fan, and I mean a crazy MFing Wings fan, don’t come here and expect to read things you like! It’s not rocket surgery.

Bob, I’d say a great deal of the 19 were absolutely shocked that they didn’t call that Zetterberg one against San Jose back on intent to blow and we wouldn’t be calling for heads to roll if it had happened in that situation. We’ve been screwed plenty of time on slow whistle goals just like every team in the league. What happened with May’s goal is just the boiling point. The league crossed the threshold of things that can be subjectively explained away by a referees intent and instead chose to back ineptitude over integrity.
I don’t think we’d be covering it as hard on A2Y if it had happened to another team or even to Dallas in that game against us, but I can say with 100% assurance that the 19 would be talking about such a thing as an example of a flawed system that badly needs to be fixed for the benefit of the game.

The only time I use ‘faux’ is with ‘faux-hawk.’ As in, “That’s a f*cking stupid faux-hawk that Mike Green is wearing.”
I’ve decided to start following the KHL. Partly to spite the NHL and hope, genuinely hope that for all their third-rate facilities and shifty infrastructure, they can become genuine competition to what is not the only hockey superpower in the world…But also because the unbridled greed and naked ambition of Russian oligarchs with checkered, redacted pasts is easier to take than obvious incompetence that is shrouded in corpospeak and cash-grubbing hands that take fan income for granted and whose single thanks thrown our way was putting ‘Thank You Fans’ on the blueline for one season after the lockout—the same hands that turn around and insist their single finger directed my way is all part of improving the game. At least with the KHL, I know that the owners and administrators won’t hold a gun to my head and try to tell me it’s a goddamn hair scrunchie.
“Intent to Blow” happened in Toronto last night. If it doesn’t even get the attention it deserves in the centre (misspelling intentional) of the hockey universe, then all hope really is lost.

“What is not” should have read “What is.”
put in place a mechanism that would allow the proper call to stand.
There already is a mechanism in place, there was when they replaced the goal judges with video review. But stupid me, video review can’t override the ref’s decision. Nor can the War Room. So if they’re looking to save money just like they did with the goal judges, there’s another couple things to cut.

One of your fellow ‘Red Wings fans’ posted this in another one of your posts. You need to see it, and perhaps learn a little about humility and moving on from things. Things are NOT always going to go your way, as one of your commenters says it should. The refs are human, the league is human, they’re going to make mistakes. To expect more is asinine.
Looking through these comments, I’m glad I never check Red Wings blogs like this. This is simply horrendous. You people make me embarrassed to say I root for the Red Wings, to say I’m from Detroit. I’m so thoroughly disgusted.
Some have suggested players try to INJURE refs? That sickens me, it truly does. Are we not proud anymore?
The Pens get on my nerves as much as anyone else, but why are we still claiming that it’s a conspiracy to help them win? In a blogpost about the Red Wing’s game last night, no less. These people are professionals. They don’t tank. They beat us. We need to start acting professional, not undercutting a young team’s success because they beat us. Yes, THEY beat us, not the refs, not the NHL, not Gary. Maybe it’s just a generational difference, but there used to be honor in losing. As a long-time booster of the team, I never saw this sort of behavior among my fellow fans. Never such hatred, such horrific vitriol.
Why can’t we respect our player’s efforts, and those of other people? Why do we have to bash, and make excuses, when we’re bested? When a call doesn’t go our way, why are people like ‘The Chief’ so quick to spew their hatred? There was bad call. That shouldn’t make you less of a fan. That shouldn’t make you hate the refs, our the league. You can be angry, and upset, but this is simply sad.
I pity people that have this sort of reaction. Have the younger fans, with out, heh, dominance in recent years, gotten spoiled, to the point where we hate and make excuses like bratty children? What happened to enjoying the game? Honor among fans?
I know I will never be back at this blog. I know none of you care, either. I just hope that things will change at some point. Hopefully we can learn to be gracious losers, and stop things like this blog. The last time I checked this blog was after our loss in the Stanely Cup, and I didn’t post then, but to pretend that we didn’t lose, like this ‘Chief’ did, was simply horrendous. These sort of things make me sick to my stomach. Can we grow up? This team and its fans are on a saddening downturn, and it just makes me feel awful to know I share seats at the Joe with them.

I know I will never be back at this blog. I know none of you care, either.
I care quite a bit, actually. Happiness is caring. I know you’re probably not around because, golly, it’s easy to believe that people actually leave after posting such bullshit calling out a blog and its commenters, but you’re an Uncle Tom of Red Wing fandom and I’m embarrassed by you.
To insinuate that we have no right to complain, no right to be angry when humans get things wrong WITH THE AID OF TECHNOLOGY THAT WOULD ALLOW THEM TO GET IT RIGHT is just absolutely f*cking stupid.
Yes, I admit that I’m the one who suggests players aim hard dump-arounds at the referees and I will continue to support that idea until I hear from the league that they are putting measures in place to correct what happened on Wednesday night. Players are responsible for the integrity of the game as much as referees and the league. If the last two of those things aren’t going to do a damn thing to make sure the game is called fairly, I want the first one to step up like they have in years past and take matters into their own hands. Just like the old days when teams had to employ goons to protect their star players.
there used to be honor in losing.
There also used to be slavery, Tom. I don’t mind losing on equal terms. When the Ducks eliminated us in the WCF, I was pissed, but accepted it.
Why can’t we respect our player’s efforts, and those of other people? Why do we have to bash, and make excuses, when we’re bested?
This is just your refusal to read carefully. It’s nobody’s fault but your own that you’ve failed or refused to see the admission by us that Dallas outplayed us. You’re not around enough to know what we say in defeat. Of course we’re the most angry at the blown call, it’s a part of the game that we know isn’t being fixed. If Ericsson blows a coverage and a guy scores, we get down on him sure, but we also know that he’s working to improve. The league is not working to improve the refereeing standard. Our anger is valid.

I forgot about this piece, and since Uncle Tom is trying to take me to task on this shit, here’s the low-down for people who aren’t around A2Y constantly and think they understand what they’re reading.
The pidgin writing in crayon in the rulebook signed by Gary Crosby was a f*cking joke. I can’t believe I even have to explain this to somebody. If you’re incapable of recognizing glibness when it’s so obviously spread, then I hope you never read The Onion or watch The Daily Show.

I didn’t really post yesterday.
I’ll admit, I wasn’t as worked up over the call-off as I maybe could have or should have been. I’m just getting numb to it anymore. Puck goes off the netting, falls to the rink, and then ends up in the net? Of COURSE that sort of thing happens against the Wings and is allowed. Goal called off because Holmstrom was within 50 feet of the crease? Of course, it always happens to the Wings.
This seemed like just another scar to paint onto the 19’s facemask, just another in a long line of screwjobs by officials.

funny, other sports have effective systems in place to make up for human error. so does the NHL…they just refuse to actually USE IT.
To expect more is asinine.
to be content with what we have is what is asinine. is expecting a “good hockey goal” (remember how much the league loves that phrase) to count, “expecting more”? no. it’s expecting THE BARE MINIMUM.

Why can’t we respect our player’s efforts, and those of other people.
I cannot speak for anyone else, but I think you have missed the issue.
The major points, that you seemed to miss, being that
(1) the Wings were obviously screwed by the officiating - - despite the fact that it was “reveiwed” by the “war room”, and the league somehow managed to still get it wrong, and
(2) there is probably nothing the league will do to correct the situation, and the fans will just have to continue to “be satisfied” with the league’s continuing ineptitude.
Hopefully we can learn to be gracious losers.
I’ll be a gracious loser when the Wings get beaten by a better opponent, on an “even ice surface.”
However, this instance, quite obviously, does not meet that criteria.

From Wakiji, Detroit News:
Goaltender Chris Osgood will play tonight for the first time since Nov. 7 at Toronto. He returned to practice this week after getting sick following the Columbus game Nov. 11.
Jimmy Howard will play Saturday at Montreal.
“Howie played good in Montreal last year, too,” Babcock said. “He took us to a shootout there and played well. This gives him just another day to have a breath and get ready to go again. But he’s been excellent.”
Daniel Larsson returned to Grand Rapids.
Kirk Maltby will replace May in the lineup tonight.
“May’s done a real good job, it has nothing to do with how he’s played,” Babcock said. “It’s just the lineup that they (Florida) have sets it up that we can roll four lines. We’re playing three games in four nights. It’s important to have four lines rolling out of the gate.”

Seriously? You are going to say someone else is unfairly attacking the reputation of others one day after you did the same thing to Wings fans, which btw, you do about once a month.

That is one ridiculous GAA. Its slightly higher than my blood alcohol level on any given wednesday afternoon. Of course I’m talking about Clemmensen.

Here is some good news, from George Richards, Miami Herald:
The Panthers defense has been much improved over the past few weeks, and it will be put to the test Friday against the defending Western Conference champion Red Wings.
And Scott Clemmensen, Florida’s most vocal defensive critic to date this season, will find out firsthand how much better things have gotten.
Clemmensen, who gave up seven goals against Washington on Nov. 7 and said playing behind the Panthers defense was ``kind of survival’’ afterward, will start in place of Tomas Vokoun.
Tomas Vokoun 16 G/P, 6-8-2, 2.76 GA/A, .922 sv%
Scott Clemmensen 4 G/P, 2-1- 0, 5.13 GA/A, .838 sv%

You know, I thought you were really spot-on about your analysis of the NHL’s “intent to blow” problems until you started unfaily attacking the reputation of others, which really undermined all of it.

I read that during a meeting this morning and literally laughed out loud. Probably the most hypocritical thing I’ve seen on the Gore.
Reminder:
Beyond Detroit losing a goal, the worst thing about this situation is that it’ll provide further fodder for the tin foil hat society among Wings fans, who are convinced that Gary Bettman and the NHL and the Illuminati and the Stonecutters are all conspiring in some secret cabal to undermine their franchise. Because what business would want one of its most popular, ratings-driving, star-studded franchises to, you know, succeed?
And this from the innocent victim’s Twitter.
Paul knows, like I know, it’s an act. His readers don’t. @bzarcher Kukla keeps letting him run off his chains makes me lose respect for Paul 39 minutes ago from web
You’re right Greg. I’m coming clean. It’s all an act.
Keep digging.

I’ll remind anyone else who cares or has read this far: I don’t do this for clicks, for money, recognition, attribution or for any other reason than this: I’m a Detroit Red Wing fan and I like to write about them, and I like to give 19 other fanatical bastards like me a place to do the same.
And that’s why we love ya, Chief.
Jesus, WizzDouchski. Give it a rest. No one here cares what you have to say. You just look pathetic.

Clemmensen might be their whipping boy, he seems to draw assignments against teams that have just been severely pissed off the game before.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.
