For The Record

Errors, errors everywhere. I feel like the Tiger pitching staff.  Thanks to Matt for pointing out that my public castration of Brett Lebda yesterday was unwarranted.  Lebda wasn’t on the ice for the Wolski goal--that was Franzen with the assist.

Thanks, too, to Left Wing Lock for reminding me our young friend Ozzie was also a key component of The Rivalry.

On to some Thursday deep digging.

Helene St. James, despite the Worst Headline of 2007 ("Kronwall Shows Pluck With Puck"), highlights the Red Wings’ version of Damon Bailey (anyone who can explain that comparison without looking it up gets an A2Y-sponsored block of cheddar cheese).

A perfect opportunity to overturn a disappointing first half presented itself Sunday at Anaheim, when Mathieu Schneider left with a strained knee. (Schneider is expected to return Saturday.) Kronwall ended up playing a career-high 30:55, and followed up with 25:16 on Tuesday. His duty has increased on the power play, where he has taken over Schneider’s spot opposite Nicklas Lidstrom on the first unit.

After rarely taking more than a shot or two a game the first couple of months, Kronwall has gone to his stick with a vengeance, taking 13 shots in the past three games.

In St. James’ defense: she doesn’t write her own headlines.  Late night staffers typically write those after the stories have been submitted and chopped.

Former DD Captain Ted Kulfan, after months of research and Woodward-like tenacity, finally broke the news that Dominik Hasek is 42.

Coach Mike Babcock said Wednesday Hasek will start tonight against the Phoenix Coyotes. That will be Hasek’s 34th game this season, likely more than anyone expected to this point of the schedule.

“At this point I expect to play around 60 games,” Hasek said. “Actually that’s close to my usual number. I don’t expect it to be a problem and it’ll get me ready for the playoffs.”

Kulfan went on to say that Hasek “...expects Osgood to see the majority of action later this month.”

Really?  Back-to-back on 19 and 20 January against the BJ’s and Dique. But other than that it’s pretty much every other night the rest of the month.  I’ll be curious to see what the Czech translation of “majority” is after we get through the next three weeks.

Khan(!) went a little further and said Hasek’s statement was a result of conversations with Daddy.

Babcock said Chris Osgood will start Saturday at home against Chicago. Another reason Hasek has played more than expected is because of Osgood’s broken wrist that idled him for five weeks.

“I spoke to the coach last week and he told me in the next few weeks, even if it’s not back-to-back games, we will play Ozzie more than before,’’ Hasek said.

While we’re on the subject of Khan(!), Father Mike and coach-player relationships, I’m assuming you’ve seen the captain’s blog entry from Tuesday?  Jason Williams was irked at how Babcock let him know he was press-box bound Sunday in Anaheim.

“He’s the coach, he makes the decisions. I don’t really like the way he did it. I just have to control what I can control.’’

How did he do it?

“Just coming up and giving me a tap on the shin pads (after the pregame warm-ups), that’s how he normally does it, but he could have come to me before the game and said, “We’re going to probably sit you out tonight,’’ or something like that and explain it to me. It’s the way he wants to handle it, he’s going to control the situation how he wants to control it.’’

So...he did it how he normally does it but he should have done it differently than normal?

After reading something like that I’m always left wondering what a player like Jason Williams thinks he’s accomplishing by going to the Diggers with his complaints.  My advice: shut the Hell up and be thankful Babcock’s given you the opportunities previous Wing coaches haven’t.  I think my opinion of Williams on the point during the power play is well known here.  In case it’s not:  it’s a frigging disaster and has been for 18 months.

From Bruce MacLeod:

Defenseman Andreas Lilja was caught at the Colorado blue line in the third period, Tuesday—a mistake that led to a 2-on-1 and the Avalanche scoring a goal that put them ahead 3-2 with 16:13 to play. Lilja was benched after the play, getting just one more shift in the third and none in overtime. He finished with a season-low ice time of 8:21 despite the game lasting 65 minutes.

Williams should really keep his mouth shut, especially after Babcock let him go in the shootout (I realize he said these things before that).  I’m still scratching my head about that one.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:
