Franzen at 39?

Got up at 0400 and spent the next five hours pouring over Corsi numbers.  Awesome stuff.  I think my next project will be to develop my own system and rate the bloggers here at KK.  The results, I’m sure, would be interesting.  I’ll let you guys consider the criteria.

Also saw a ditty over at the Fanhouse, a listing of their top 50 NHL’ers.  They’ve gone through 50 to 9 and today, at number 8, is Hank Zetterberg.  Read the article to see what they had to say about our future Captain.  Something else in there made me shake the Corsi cobwebs out.  Ready?

According to Fanhouse’s Adam Gretz, the following players are all better than Johan Franzen—arguably the best playoff performer in the league.  Mule’s at 39.

No. 38—Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles Kings
No. 37—Jay Bouwmeester, Calgary Flames
No. 36—Jeff Carter, Philadelphia Flyers
No. 35—Dion Phaneuf, Calgary Flames
No. 34—Jason Spezza, Ottawa Senators
No. 33—Marian Gaborik, New York Rangers
No. 32—Daniel Alfredsson, Ottawa Senators
No. 31—Evgeni Nabokov, San Jose Sharks
No. 30—Thomas Vanek, Buffalo Sabres
No. 29—Sergei Gonchar, Pittsburgh Penguins
No. 28—Alexander Semin, Washington Capitals
No. 27—Martin St. Louis, Tampa Bay Lightning
No. 26—Mike Green, Washington Capitals
No. 25—Niklas Backstrom, Minnesota Wild
No. 24—Marc Savard, Boston Bruins
No. 23—Mike Richards, Philadelphia Flyers
No. 22—Zach Parise, New Jersey Devils
No. 21—The Sedin Twins, Vancouver Canucks
No. 20—Rick Nash, Columbus Blue Jackets
No. 19—Ryan Getzlaf, Anaheim Ducks
No. 18—Eric Staal, Carolina Hurricanes
No. 17—Chris Pronger, Philadelphia Flyers
No. 16—Dany Heatley, Ottawa Senators
No. 15—Marian Hossa, Chicago Blackhawks
No. 14—Vincent Lecavalier, Tampa Bay Lightning
No. 13—Ilya Kovalchuk, Atlanta Thrashers
No. 12—Zdeno Chara, Boston Bruins
No. 11—Martin Brodeur, New Jersey Devils
No. 10—Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers
No. 9—Joe Thornton, San Jose Sharks

There is a slim chance I may be biased, but I’m going to revise that list to include only those I believe most GMs would take over Franzen if they had to choose today.

No. 35—Dion Phaneuf, Calgary Flames
No. 31—Evgeni Nabokov, San Jose Sharks
No. 20—Rick Nash, Columbus Blue Jackets
No. 19—Ryan Getzlaf, Anaheim Ducks
No. 14—Vincent Lecavalier, Tampa Bay Lightning
No. 13—Ilya Kovalchuk, Atlanta Thrashers
No. 12—Zdeno Chara, Boston Bruins
No. 11—Martin Brodeur, New Jersey Devils
No. 10—Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers
No. 9—Joe Thornton, San Jose Sharks

Phaneuf, Nabokov, Getzlaf are debatable too.

A few of the ones I lopped off? Gonchar, Green, Bouwmeister….all defensemen, depending on your definition.

As for the rest of the list after Zetterberg?  Well, Lidstrom and Datsyuk haven’t been mentioned yet.  Who else?  Chris Osgood.  Think he should be in there?  Well.  He’s got Nabokov, Backstrom, Brodeur and Lundqvist.  I’d bet most GMs, based on Osgood’s playoff pedigree, would take him over Nabokov and Backstrom.

As for Zetterberg at 8…we can assume the following will fill out the remaining 7, Gertz’ choices as better players than Z….Dats, Lidstrom, Luongo, Ovechkin, Malkin, Rosby and who?  I’d say Tim Thomas, but I could be missing an obvious one because my head still swims with Corsi numbers.

Enjoy your Sunday.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y.
