Friday Odds and Ends

Back in Tennessee for the weekend.  Pleasant to be reminded that teeth, nouns AND verbs, and the merits of relationships outside the traditional family tree are all still considered overrated here.  Oh, c’mon Bubba.  You know I’m just teasin’.  Speaking of Bubba…

18 games left for Detroit, 17 for Bubba.  Of those 18, the Wings will face Chicago, Columbus and St. Louis a combined 7 times.  Bubba’s got them 3 times.  But all of a sudden I’m looking at the standings, and that one seed doesn’t seem as appealing as it did just a few weeks ago?

Why?

(Notice the influx of hard returns...my testament to the Delicate Genius) Because, as I think you’ve noticed, “if the playoffs started today” you know who we’d face don’t you?  Yep.  Our boy Marty.  That’s right.  The Team We Don’t Speak Of sits 2 points behind Dallas and that makes me feel warm and secure.  Nashville walks away with the division and the 1 seed and they get Calgary.  Do the Flames scare me the way they would have in recent years?  Not really. But I’d still take Dallas because of our ownership of Turco.

Double Disc Trouble.

So Bertuzzi’s out two to three more weeks as he recovers from surgery to repair a herniated disc, or something similar.

MLive/Khan(!)

Bertuzzi, who will wear No. 44, practiced for the first time Thursday as a Red Wing and stayed out for the entire time, which surprised the coaches. Bertuzzi, who has played in only seven games this season because of a back injury, is probably two or three weeks away from his debut with the Wings.

Zetterberg’s out “two to three weeks” because of a herniated disc.

Detroit News/Kulfan

“You get closer to the playoffs, you just want to be going and get ready for the playoffs,” Zetterberg said. “But I’m not going to be able to do that, just rest and rehab and slowly get back.”

On Bertuzzi...anyone been discussing whether this is truly the “rental” some seem convinced it is?  Me? I’m not convinced of that at all.  I think he comes back 17 March in Vancouver, plays well the rest of the regular season, makes an impact in the playoffs and signs for 3 years over the summer.  I’ll go ahead and give that an (e4).  I’ll be waiting on that phone call today, Sportsnet.

Finally, if some of you haven’t notice there is quite the interesting discussion going on in the comment section of this post.  Thomas, a ‘Dique (pronounced “deek") fan is going one on five with several A2Y regulars and it’s been entertaining to follow.  Keep in mind, Thomas is a typical Dive fan in that he’s delusional enough to really believe there is a future for his little team.  He’s atypical, though, because he can actually hold a conversation and defend himself where necessary with something other than “wing fans and bloggers are mean.”

You lack the understanding of the game to go toe-to-toe with me, so you just call me “deluded” and act as if *I* am the one who doesn’t know what he’s talking about. You bury your head in the sand and pretend I didn’t just rip you a new one, because that would force you to admit that there’s an Avalanche fan who knows the game a hundred times better than you do.

Not bad.  Admirable, in fact.  Thomas acquits himself well and his stuff is fun to read.  But the fact still remains that no matter the arguments he presents, he’s still the worst kind of Dique fan...one who has Michigan ties. That, my friends, is downright criminal.

I have no problem with Thomas disagreeing on hockey with any of us. He clearly knows the game and I wouldn’t dispute that. I have a problem when he wastes his good comments and discussion by adding ungrounded attacks on Wings fans. It only makes he arguments look weak, when they shouldn’t.

And just an FYI, I believe our pal Khan(!) corrected the Freep the other day and specified that Z has an inflamed disc, which is considerably better than a herniated disc.

Holland’s M.O. in acquiring legit top line/pairing/starting goalie talent via trade is to retain them.  Hasek, Chelios, Schneider, Lang, Murphy (sort of) all fit that bill.

My impression is that if the organization thinks the guy is good enough to move assets for the collorlary is he ought to be good enough to re-sign if reasonable terms could be reached.

C’mon IWO, we have learned to embrace out of town RW fans and when necessary even tolerate ‘em.  But what planet do you live on that makes you think we will tolerate a Big Bert for 3 yrs rumor.  He had like one good game in Van last year as they crashed and burned in the playoff run.  A major didappointment in Fla, and main reason they had a fire sale this year.  No one is convinced here that he can still skate on single blade skates without a walker, he has Ewe Krupp tattooed all over his back, and you think Holland should give him a 3 yr contract.  Send me some of whatever you been smokin’.

Not a rumor Gramps, simply a guess based on Holland’s past history.  If Bertuzzi’s back allows it, I think he’ll be a force.

I agree.  If Bert’s back holds up and he heads into the summer healthy, and we can re-sign him, this deal could wind being a steal for Kenny Boy.  Getting a top-six power forward without giving up a roster player?  Sounds good to me.

One of my sisters moved to Tenn with her second husband. After a few years she moved back home and said to me that “The collective IQ of the whole state is that of a moron.” Then she moved back down there with her third husband. Uhhh… did the collective IQ go up or down when she moved back? How about when you got back there Iwo?

Well Hippo, I went for a run this morning and saw quite a few cars on blocks and plenty of tires on roofs, as usual.  I stopped to talk hockey with a local but when I mentioned the word “Predator” he got nervous and asked if I was another guy from Dateline coming to interview him.

Ornery little cuss, isn’t he?

Last time anybody associated with the Avs got that worked up, doors in the homestead were ripped from their hinges.

couldnt agree more IwoCPO.  I was just posting about this the other day.  Provided he plays well(and he is EXACTLY the type of power forward the wings have needed), i think hes in the long term plans.  AFter his last season semi-unproductive with Vancouver, coupled with the injurys, its quite possible holland could get him to sign for 2-3 years for 4mil/per(ish).  Then he signs datsyuk for his 6.5(ish) long term..Lang maltby and schneider are probably gone.. kindl and say.. quincey come up as 6/7.  Grigorenko comes over, and hudler and filppula take a more prominant role. so you have datsyuk/z/homer as #1, bertuzzi,/hudler/grigorenko, franzen/filppula/sammy and draper/cleary/kopecky.  Should still be well under the cap, and holland wont even have to get involved in UFA bidding wars.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

How Others View The A2Y 19

"Hell, I guarantee the content co-opters at Abel to Yzerman were about to link this article under the heading “Bitter Blues Fans” again right up until they just read that last half-sentance. Thanks but no thanks, you Kukla hangers-on."
--St. Louis Game Time

"I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site."
--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields

"I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season."
--Mile High Hockey

"I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…"
--In The Cheap Seats

"It's just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don't deserve their team."
--Thhom

"I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think."
--Drew Sharp

"Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players? I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better."
--A2Y Fan, Jeff Beaumont

"Have you ever *read* A2Y? Its the most opinionated, juvenile stuff i've read."
--Paul Nicholson

"I actually like the Detroit team and have a sh&% load of respect for them, but their fans are the biggest douches next to Canadians."
