A few stats for your perusal this Friday evening. And for comparison’s sake I’ll throw in how they ended up last season, and how they finished in 01-02.
* Power Play: the Wings have skyrocketed to 22nd (15.4), thanks to their current hot streak with the man-up. They’ve now scored a PP goal in 7 straight games.
05-06: 1st, 22.1%
01-02: 2nd, 20.3%
* Penalty Kill: Still lingering in the middle of the pack at 17th (82.4).
05-06: 3rd, 85.5%
01-02, 7th, 86.0%
Hard to imagine either unit falling below their present rank, and both will most likely end up top 10 by season’s end.
*The Wings are 9th in the league in points (40), but 5th in winning percentage at .667. Naturally, that doesn’t take into account OT or shootout losses. If that were the case, their percentage would be right at .600.
05-06: 1st in points with 122, 1st in winning percentage at .756
01-02: 1st in points with 116, 1st in winning percentage at .707
* Detroit now sits second in goals against/game (2.17) but maintain a strong lead in shots against (22.4).
05-06 GAA: 3rd, 2.51. Shots against: 3rd, 26.6
01-02 GAA: 3rd, 2.28. Shots against: 13th, 26.3
* The Wings also lead, by a wide margin, in winning percentage after scoring first (.867).
05-06 WP after scoring first: 6th, .745
01-02 WP after scoring first: 2nd, .739
* And the Wings lead the league in faceoff percentage 54%.
05-06 Faceoff percentage: 3rd, 52.8
01-02 Faceoff percentage: 9th, 51.4
Oh, and just for fun…here are Hasek’s stats for this year, 05-06 and 01-02.
06-07 GAA: 1.90, SV%: .910, Shutouts: 4
05-06 GAA: 2.09, SV%: .925, Shutouts: 5
01-02 GAA: 2.17, SV%: .915, Shutouts: 5

Gramps is right, but the stats are interesting anyway. The overall message is that the Wings are at least a competitive team, despite what the CBA has done to them. The most important stat is Hasek’s play. I think the Wings’ brain trust is handling him perfectly. And Holland made a great call in hiring him. Holland really got the best bang for his buck. Granted, I would rather have Luongo, but that was never going to happen. Oh my gosh, I am glad we didn’t get Crazy Eddie! Speaking of Goalies, when is Ozzie coming back from his “rash”? What the hell? Chicken pox? And…Howie is finally starting to ” get it” in Grand Rapids.

Did anyone ever think their Power Play had no where to go but up? They’ll be middle of the pack on the Power Play this season. But I still think they’re too predictable on the Powerplay and teams will shut it down come playoff time

5 out of the last 7 games were against very weak teams, one woud correctly assume their PK & PP would be better under those circumstances. The other 2 games were losses..
