What a great end to a great season.  No doubt we made a huge down payment on this thing in February when we learned to stick together through tough times and not let things snowball.

Some people thought the one word difference that would define this series between the Penguins and the Wings would be “Age” .  We just changed their word.

Experience.

I now don’t have to hear the name Crosby nor the word obstruction the rest of the summer. Kudos to Pittsburg, despite the giftwrap efforts of the officials. They really came on the back end of the series, particularly MAF. The pressure that kid handled at that age amazes me. I mean, the only thing I was stressed about at that age was exams.

And I swear, if I meet any guy named Michel this summer, he is getting hit. I don’t care if its on top of a 14,000 foot mountain, he’s getting a 2,000 foot cross check.

Credit to the Pens. After game 2, I was listing off Western Teams that could have beaten them in the finals… That list grew significantly shorter as this series progressed.  I would not be surprised to see the Cup back in the Mellon Arena (or the new arena they’re building) in the upcoming years.

For Grandpa. He left in February and we sucked. My freaking Uncle (who I almost never talk to) called me after the first goal tonight. We did the same thing me and Gpa did almost every game - a call after each Wings goal. After we won he called and said “To Grandpa - here here.”

So - To Grandpa!  He enjoyed all 19 of us because we don’t get good hockey news in Georgia. I printed A2Y posts, Deteoit Free Press and other articles for him in his last days. He especially enjoyed the glossery Bill. And that game you gave me your log in to NHL.tv was the last Wings game he saw… Even if it was on a laptop it brought a smial to his face.

Thank you everyone.

Thanks to all The 19.

This series was gift wrapped repeatedly for Gary’s Baby Boy and his mates, but the Wings continually overcame the 8 on 6.

Don’t forget folks the NHL Awards program, as painful as the MC always is - it’s the guy from CBC.

Thanks Wings...my liver can now heal, my sphincter can loosen, and my heart-rate can be somewhere closer to normal!!!

Thanks for all the awesome posts and live blogs, chief. I love your writing and this community, even if I mostly lurk. I was riding the Hasek all the way with you guys.

I’ve given out some dedications to the Wings, feel free to add your own if you like.

http://dirtygames.wordpress.com/2008/06/05/your-stanley-cup-champions-the-detroit-red-wings/

for Niklas Kronwall, who realized that it’s much more fun to hurt other people than hurt himself. And who will be putting fear into the heart of opposing forwards for years to come.

for Pavel Datsyuk, who doesn’t need to speak proper English with hands like that.

for Darren McCarty, who represents the best and worst of all of us, and got the second chance we all deserve when we need it.

for Kris Draper, who gave that second chance to his old friend, and trusted when he could easily have turned his back.

for Jiri Hudler, Brett Lebda and Valtteri Filppula, three kids who are now men. Damn fine men at that.

YEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSS~
The city of Pittsburgh can offically kiss my ass. Their fans were rude and obnoxious with a majority of them booing the Stanley Cup Champs and the Conn Smyth winner.

Sour grapes from a bunch of whiners…....kid of like Crosby and Therrien? Yes, I guess the whole city if full of friggin whiners.

Anyway! Awesome job by the boyz tonite wrapping it up and ending it for good. As always they were on a man disadvantage because everyone now knows the Pens were exposed and had no chance at even strength. I swear I am so glad that the “7 on 5’s” are over…..it’s really hard to win a championship when you are playing the 5 guys on the ice plus 2 of the zebras each game.

WAY TO GO RED WINGS!!!

Cindy Crosby can do whay she does best…........SUCK IT.

It was a fun year, and having friends to laugh with, cry with, scream with, plan animal sacrifices with, and commiserate with made it all the more fun.

What a season.  It’s going to be so boring to go back to normal life - but nice to have my heart rate slow down and breathing return to normal!  smile

Thank you, Chief.  Thank you to all of you silly Red Wings fans out there.  I remember listening to Bruce Martyn on WJR as a youngster on the way home from the Findlay Hancock County rec center or the Tam O’ Shanter rink in Sylvania outside of Toledo.  Or going to watch friends play in the periodic “Hockey Night in Detroit” pickup game at the Joe on off nights.  Back then I thought that I might not ever see a Wings Stanely Cup.  I was at sea in the Navy in 1997, but we pulled in in time to see game four and McCarty’s brilliant strike.  For game three I had the chief IC or ops petty officer wire armed forces radio into my headset.  The next morning the captain wondered what all the noise coming from the bridge was about.

In 2002 I got to watch game three with my Dad, and watched game five and the Cup with close friends from southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio.

God bless all of you.  God bless Detroit, may that city one day emerge from its economic funk.

God bless the Detroit Red Wings.  Stanley Cup Champions for the fourth time in eleven years.  Eleven-time Cup Champions all time.

Every Cup is just as sweet as the last one.
Congratulations to the Wings and their fans. Oh, I guess that’s us. I discovered this blog somewhat belatedly and am impressed daily by the passion and erudition of the fans here.
And congratulations also to the Penguins (who could have folded and didn’t) and all their fans, especially them who stuck around for the Cup presentation and hand-offs when they had to be feeling almost as bad (no way they felt worse) as I did after Game 5, which far exceeds the Michigan-Colorado football game and the Piston inbound giveaway against Boston as my personal worse losses ever as a Detroit sports fan. I’ve been on f***in sucide watch since Monday after about 2 1/2 hours sleep. Subsequently my internet activity has been minimal because of the danger represented by the cord on the mouse.
Tonight I discovered a solution to playoff anxiety- a Xanax before the game and one more during the second period, washed down with the better part of a 6 pack. I think it’s the only thing that kept me from destroying something after that cheap call on a very weak hook that had absolutely no effect on the play that was called only to create end-of-game drama with the clock winding down resulting in a Pittsburgh PP goal. After letting the two teams skate the entire period that obligatory penalty and it’s potential effect on the game and the series was predictable, I guess, but I really didn’t need that stress after Game 5.
Oh, one more thing. F**k you Bettman. The only thing that would have made this better would have been to have won at home and had boos and octopi rain down upon you.

Posted by BobS.  on 06/04 at 11:58 PM

Bob that call was just incredible BS.  The fix was really in on this series.  What made that call even more incredulous...Datsyuk was ripped right off his skates at center ice but no call, which led to the last chance by the Pens.  What BS.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y.
