GDT - Game #9: Red Wings at Wild (8:00)

By all accounts the Red Wings turned in a much better effort last night, and lost. DET (5-3) now possess the worst losing streak in the league. As you’d expect, there is great anxiety in the Hasek. The “19” are asking questions, and pointing fingers in all directions; Holland, Babcock, and the roster. A consensus is forming that DET “just aren’t good enough.” I’m not quite ready to hit the panic button, but I certainly can hear David Bowie exercising his pipes. Last year DET finished with a .634 point%, .622 in 09-10, .683 in 08-09; right now they are .625; so they aren’t terribly off the pace. Having said that, DET have scored only 4 goals during the losing streak, and the #2 line do not have a single point between them during the streak.
But hell, I’m just glad to see that DET finally turned in a good effort, and I expect the Wings to put in the same type of effort on a much more consistent basis. But it is damn sure time to post a W. LGRW.

The Wings are good enough. Whether they want it enough time will tell. But if the effort is there, I’ll take that anytime.
Thanks, Okie.
LET’S GO RED WINGS!!!!!

I tthought the number two line was good had good chances.. thought mickey was tough on them but they were going just not getting..
Top line was MIA first 6 games.. they definitely are missing swagger as a team…
I think there could be some merit to the team just not being great.. with the parity in the league skill is very evenly dispursed and we don’t look like a team that recognizes that. Against columbus they looked like they thought it was gonna be a cakewalk and got stuck in the mouth.. think the team thinks they’re better than tthey are and aren’t competing hard enough or persuing the puck like they used to.. will over skill

Good work as always Jeff.
As it’s still very early in the season, I wouldn’t necessarily say that I’m quite in panic mode over this team. It’s just that last night, having now played that team from San Jose 21 teams in slightly over two calendar years, I think some of us are starting to see some pretty clear trends that aren’t exactly reassuring.
It seems that they are now our measruing stick, and not the other way around. It bears repeating, but as I mentioned last night, I don’t think the gap between the two teams is huge by any means. I also don’t think it’s insignificant either. I think the Red Wings can hang with them, beat them even, but they have to play a damn near perfect sixty minutes in order to do so.
I guess the most glaring trend when these two teams meet is that whenever the game is on the line, it’s inevitably the Wings who seem to make the crucial mistake at the crucial moment and whenever those breakdowns occur, the Sharts make them pay by burying their chances. The Wings, on the other hand, are capable of carrying the play to them for long stretches, but they just don’t seem to have the horses to finish in close around the net with the same proficiency as San Jose.
To me it’s is simple as that. They have better offensive players at the top of their lineup and they capitalize on the Wings’ all too numerous breakdowns and blunders. It’s not panic, just a rational assessment. Ask yourself this. Do guys like Hudler, Cleary and Filppula even sniff top six minutes on SJ’s roster? Probably not.
Again, I don’t think the gap is huge, but I do think in order to move beyond a merely good team that will probably make the playoffs and possibly win their division—in order to regain their status as one of the teams to beat—the Wings need an infusion of sorts. Foremost, I think they desparately need to find someone to play alongside Datsyuk and Hank who can complement what they do and be a constant threat to score goals. That would allow Cleary to return to his “utility infielder” role. He’s so much better suited to the grinder, occasional complementary or secondary scorer who can plug in and be effective in a variety of roles.
I also agree with those who have suggested that beyond whatever talent deficiencies exist on the current roster, they could use a little fire in the belly as well. Granted we’re merely observers, but from where I sit at least, I gotta say it does look as though there’s not a helluva a lot of passion and that maybe the whole calm, buttoned-down approach that has been their trademark has reached a point of diminishing returns. The fact that their head coach has continued to question his team’s commitent and effort level over the past three seasons rather strongly suggests there might be some chemistry issues that need to be addressed.
Or maybe it’s just the way that three game losing streaks make me see things. I guess we’ll find out more about this team in a few hours.

Brunnstrom has been placed on waivers.
Well they were 5-0 when he was inserted into the lineup and they haven’t been the same since. Scapegoat?

But it is damn sure time to post a W. LGRW.
We should have had the last 2 of 3 or better. And, I want a far better effort than even last night.
Oh, and keep Homer in. He is a beast.
Thanks OAkie.

Maybe trying to sneak him through on a busy weekend? Doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense.

Or Tatar. It’s a curious move regardless.
