GDT - Game #11: Red Wings at Oilers (9:00)

Game 11 finds the Wings posting an impressive .750 pt percentage, 3rd best in the league, yet DET are in 3rd place in the Central. Some say DET’s 2-1 win at CGY was their most impressive of the season: “Detroit’s dominance wasn’t merely reflected in the lopsided shot total - 33-17, Wings - but in the utter ease with which the mission is accomplished.” Perception is a funny thing, isn’t it? All I know about the CGY game is that the dreaded 3rd line looked - dangerous? For the first time in forever, the 3 line had real scoring chances, and cashed in for a combined 2 G, 1 A,. And wait for it, - - - were a +4, a shocking reversal of fortune (going into that game they were -16). Somewhere, Jiri Hudler is surely seeking some professional help.
Oh wait, that is what the Oil spill are doing. The Oilers have hired Amirault, the NHL’s only woman sports psychologist and a highly sought-after motivational speaker for companies, to help them think the game as well as they hope to play it. I guess if your team is 3-5-2, won’t shoot the puck, has the leagues worst PK at 68%, and occupies the W.C. basement, all options are on the table. For some reason the inner Mandingo is telling me to be afraid tonight. Game On, Bitches.

As most of you know by now, Mule has a hip flexor problem, Happy is probably watching again, and Raffi practiced:
Johan Franzen didn’t practice Thursday at Rexall Place because of a hip flexor injury that flared up, but he thinks he’ll be able to play Friday against Edmonton. . . .
Jiri Hudler practiced in Franzen’s spot on the line with Valtteri Filppula and Todd Bertuzzi. If Franzen plays, it appears Hudler will be a healthy scratch for the third consecutive game. Red Wings coach Mike Babcock wouldn’t confirm that but indicated he’s not likely to change a winning lineup and won’t break up a third line (Mike Modano, Dan Cleary, Justin Abdelkader) that played well in the 2-1 win against the Flames. . .
Defenseman Brian Rafalski participated in his first full practice Thursday since having his right knee scoped Oct. 12. . .
“If I’m feeling good Monday, I’ll take it from there,’’ Rafalski said. “Monday’s a possibility. I don’t know what the odds are. Thursday for sure.’’

Wings should sit Franzen tonight.
Now what to do with Happy? Do you let him play on the 2nd line after being benched for two games or do you move somebody up from the third and plug happy back in down there?
Sounds crazy, and is probably stupid, but I say put Abdelkader up on that line and put the third line back together the way Babcock wanted it in the first place. Gives Happy-Mo-Buckets a chance to play together again and I think Abby can fit into Mule’s role on the second line as well as any of the other three.

Cleary is usually the line jumper with Babs. If Franzen can’t go, I’d expect to see him on Fil’s wing with Bert. I’m not sure if I agree with that or not. I’m sure they’ll be shuffled at least three times if Franzen does sit out.

TSN Icechips:
Johan Franzen, who sat out practice on Thursday because of a hip flexor, expects to play tonight against Edmonton. If he can’t play, healthy scratch Jiri Hudler would skate alongside Valtteri Filppula and Todd Bertuzzi. Chris Osgood ruled himself out for both of the remaining games on this trip because of a groin injury. - Detroit Free Press

Here is an interesting bit of understatement from Oil D-man, Ryan Whitney:
A model of consistency, the Red Wings have not had to go through a rebuilding process the likes the Oilers are currently experiencing. It’s been over 20 years since Detroit has failed to make the playoffs.
“It seems like it’s never going to happen,” Whitney said. “But we’ll see when Lidstrom retires, that might hurt them a little bit.
“He’s obviously at least probably top five of all-time defencemen. He’s not the best at anything, he’s just so good at everything. He’s so good positionally — that’s probably one of his best things — he gets a lot of shots through and he has a great stick, probably one of the best sticks I’ve seen. He’s pretty impressive.”

tied with Chicago, btw. but we have FIVE games in hand against them. Thanks Gary. Ass.

For some reason the inner Mandingo is telling me to be afraid tonight.
One of the things that makes A2Y such an awesome website is the fact that we, the 19, can find some reason or another to be afraid EVERY night, despite the opponent, or circumstances.
We would find cause for concern if we had an 8 game win streak, and were playing a beer league team on their 5th straight back-to-back game. I mean, we might only score 2 goals, right?
Posted by dougie on 11/05/10 at 12:09 PM ET
Happy can be a competent second liner. He’s played second and third line for the Wings before. He might need to work a little harder, and sitting a pair of games might inspire that.

For interpretation sake if you read the Det News, here are the teams’ records.
DET (10-7)
EDM (10-3)
This follows the revolutionary format indicating GP-W (TM Kulfan), rather than W-L.

Especially when it takes 3 goals to win in the NHL these days. Not to mention trying to crawl back from a 3 goal deficit after the first 20 minutes.
Fuch, I love you puke covered, soiled pants, Hasek ridin’ bitches.

Khan(!) says Mule is in - - and so is the Hooker!
Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said forward Jiri Hudler will return to the lineup tonight against the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place (9 p.m., FSN)
It’s surprising because forward Johan Franzen (hip flexor) will play tonight, so Babcock must scratch somebody from a lineup that has been sharp the last two games.
“I got to get Huds back in the lineup, he’s too good a player and I need him,’’ Babcock said. “But everyone’s played good, so what do I do? That’s why I got the afternoon to figure it out.’‘
It’s doubtful that Babcock would sit anybody on the third line (Justin Abdelkader, Mike Modano, Dan Cleary) after those players played so well in Wednesday’s 2-1 win in Calgary.
That means a winger from the fourth line is likely to sit, either Drew Miller or Patrick Eaves.
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Quest for 12 on 11/05/10 at 02:44 PM ET
Jiri Hudler would skate alongside Valtteri Filppula and Todd Bertuzzi
haha, one of these things is not like the other
Posted by FranzensMouthguard from Chicago, IL on 11/05/10 at 02:58 PM ET
I think St. James has it right. No way they’re breaking up that 3rd line.
The odds are heavily on Patrick Eaves. He’s been wearing a thick ice pack on his left ankle for three days, and while he said he’s good to play, it’s certain the odd man out will be from the fourth line because the top two lines have been excellent and the third line is coming off a banner night.
That would make the lines:
Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Holmstrom
Franzen-Filppula-Bertuzzi
Abdelkader-Modano-Cleary
Miller-Helm-Hudler
I think Miller would be sitting if Eaves was 100%.
Posted by Mandingo from The Garage on 11/05/10 at 03:16 PM ET
Great job Jeff…...tell Rambo to bring the thunder tonight! Tune up for the playoffs.
That means a winger from the fourth line is likely to sit,
Sit the Goalie…from what I read we won’t need one tonight.
but we have FIVE games in hand against them.
Has any of the 18 of the 19 that are smarter than me looked forward to see what impact these multiple weeks of four days off betwixt games will have on the late season schedule? Are the Wings going to get stuck with an inordinate number of back to backs while other teams sit, healing, resting, chasing puppies later in the year?
Call me a cynic. Go ahead. Thanks Gary, Ass.
