GDT - Game #35: Red Wings at Stars (3:00)

After weeks of intense contract negotions, addressing issues including, but not limited to, the assumption of liability and the payment of fees and costs; the principals at the Empire and at their subisidiary, A2Y, have decreed that it is time to reinstitute the GDT(!)  The main objective of the GDT, as in seasons past, being the sharing of useful and relevant statistical information (juvenilicousness abounding at A2Y, stats, not so much).  However, this season the GDT will also be partially devoted to exorcising the Red Wing injury plague, any and all suggestions will be considered; but the volunteer of such suggestion agrees to assume sole liability for the same, and to hold harmless the author of the GDT from any and all adverse consequences which may be forthcoming from members of the “19” should such suggestion backfire.

Feel like a number?

Khan(!) tells us that Jimmah is starting this afternoon, and Helm returns:

Detroit Red Wings center Darren Helm practiced Friday and will return to the lineup for Saturday’s game in Dallas. . .

Henrik Zetterberg’s shoulder injury has prompted coach Mike Babcock to move Justin Abdelkader to line with Ville Leino and Patrick Eaves.

Here are the lines they’ll use for Saturday’s game, at least at the start:

Bertuzzi-Datsyuk-Holmstrom
Leino-Abdelkader-Eaves
Draper-Helm-Miller
May-Newbury-Maltby

They rotated the defense freely and expect to use several different combinations.

Babcock said Jimmy Howard, coming off his first career shutout, will start against the Stars and Chris Osgood will start Sunday in Chicago.

More from Khan(!) on the ridiculous, insane, curse; and a surprising by-product:

Coach Mike Babcock’s message to the team has not changed: Do not dwell on who is out, work with what you have.

“Someone wrote the other day that I think (the injured players) are dead; that’s not what I think at all,” Babcock said. “I just think there’s nothing we can do about it, so let’s just keep keeping on.

“I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. You got to knock on wood, you got to hope that we’re going to be healthy and get a chance to get playing like we’re capable of playing. But in the meantime, we just got to grind it out and find a way to win games.”

Through the adversity, the Red Wings are showing some positive signs. They have allowed only eight goals in their past six games, climbing to eighth in the NHL in goals-against average (2.49).

They have killed 36 of their past 37 shorthanded situations to move up to 14th in penalty-killing. Goaltender Jimmy Howard, who will start Saturday, is 10-4 in his past 14 games, moving up to eighth in the league in goals-against average (2.27).

From the CBC.ca:

Jimmy Howard’s 11 wins are the most in the league among rookie goalies.

Dallas is on a 1-1-4 stretch and continues to struggled in games that go beyond regulation, going 4-11 while dropping seven of nine games via shootouts.

Mike Heika, Dallas Morning News tells us that DET’s favorite whipping boy is in net today, apparently ATL whips on him too (see below):

The Stars and Wings have split two games in Detroit this season. ... Marty Turco will start in goal for the Stars. He is 5-12-5 lifetime against the Red Wings. ... The Stars are 6-2-11 in one-goal games. ... Despite all of the injuries, the Red Wings have won four straight, including two in overtime. Goalie Jimmy Howard has allowed six goals in his last five games.

Five for Fighting, Fort Worth Star Telegram, after the Stars 6-5 loss to ATL:

The Stars allowed three power play goals for the second game in a row. They had spotty goaltending, as Alex Auld was pulled after allowing three goals on 15 shots, and Marty Turco then allowed three goals on 10 shots. . .  But the bottom line is this Stars team finds new and frustrating ways to lose games every night. They now are 14-9-11, including 1-1-4 in their last six games. While that might look like .500 hockey, it feels like 1-5 hockey. And it seems very clear the team is frustrated and looking for an identity.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
