Geebuz, Santa Claus delivered the goods to the Wingnut’s house this year, he even managed to whip up a blizzard for an honest to goodness white Christmas, the first one since I left Michigan. Maybe, or hopefully, he also delivered the goods for the Wings, like the occasional goal to snap the Wings 141 minute futility streak. Perhaps too, Santa also delivered some magic elixir or magic dust (try starting the clip at the 1:30 mark) to cure the Wings injury woes; Wally is coming off IR tonight, and Raffi should be back too. Santa may also have delivered an opponent that is actually having much more significant issues than the Wings, the BJ’s have gone 1-7-3 in Dec, and have lost 8 straight.
The holiday spirits are aligned with the hockey gods, tonight the Wings get BJ’s and a happy ending to their 3 game skid. Game on, bitches.

As bad as the BJ’s are, at least statistically, the Wings are only 6 points ahead of them in the standings; and that is flipping scarry.
From Khan(!) :
Filppula, out since Oct. 29 with a broken right wrist, will return Saturday, when the Red Wings host the Columbus Blue Jackets. . .
Columbus might be the ideal opponent for the offensively challenged Red Wings. The struggling Blue Jackets have the third-worst goals-against average in the NHL (3.34).
Goaltender Steve Mason, last season’s Calder Trophy winner as rookie of the year, ranks 46th in the league in both goals-against average (3.40) and save percentage (.887).
The Red Wings whipped the Blue Jackets 9-1 at Nationwide Arena on Nov. 11. The teams meet again Monday in Columbus.
Eric Duhatschek, Globe and Mail, via George at Snapshots, beating the Fire that Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man drum?? :
Nobody would fire a coach at Christmas, right? Not even the Columbus Blue Jackets, whose bench boss, Ken Hitchcock, was feeling the heat thanks to a dismal December in which the NHL team went 1-7-3 to slip to the bottom of the Western Conference? What ailed the Blue Jackets from the start was goalie Steve Mason’s sophomore slump, in which he was consistently giving up goals early and often, putting his team behind the 8-ball. More recently, the Jackets look like a fragile team, their confidence in shreds, skating as though on eggshells. . .
Finally, from Aaron Portzline, Columbus Dispatch:
The last time the Blue Jackets played the depleted Detroit Red Wings, the Jackets suffered a humiliating 9-1 loss on Nov. 11 in Nationwide Arena, the worst home defeat in franchise history.
Since then, the Red Wings have suffered even more blows—three more defensemen and All-Star center Henrik Zetterberg out because of injuries. . .
The Blue Jackets have their own issues to deal with right now. An eight-game losing streak overall and 10 straight losses on the road have made for a fragile group of players. A 2-11-5 run has threatened to end any hope of playoff contention before the halfway point. . .
But the Wings are still without forwards Dan Cleary, Jason Williams, Johan Franzen and Zetterberg, as well as defensemen Jonathan Ericsson, Niklas Kronwall and Andreas Lilja. Keep in mind that they lost Marian Hossa, Mikael Samuelsson and Jiri Hudler through free agency.
Those losses are a big reason the Red Wings have scored just 37 goals in their past 19 games, five of them shutouts. . .
Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock has been stressing better 5-on-5 play. The Jackets have scored 62 goals at full strength but have allowed 88, the most in the NHL.
All the numbers, stats, cold goalies, return of Wally and Raffi, all say the Wings win tonight and get off the schnide, right, right?

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
