GDT - Game #57: Red Wings at Ducks (10:00)

Apparently this years edition of the Detroit Red Wings is indeed man enough answer the bell.  Amazing game last night against the #1 team in the league, especially after DET dug themselves into a two goal deficit in the first ten minutes.  All of which prompted Babcock to ponder aloud:  “Our structure was way better. If you can do it against good teams why can’t you do it every night? That’s what we’ve got to talk about. Hopefully we’re on the path to getting better.”

On the glass half-empty side of last nights game, Kronwall sits tonight:  “He got slew-footed early in the game,” Babcock said. “He left the game (in the third period) and that’s not a good sign. He won’t play (tonight against Anaheim).”  Big E(rror) may get out of the doghouse early.

Huge game tonight for ANA (6-4 in last ten), who sit in 11th place, 5 points from 8th. ANA are coming off a 3-0 at FLA Monday.  Hopefully, DET can keep the train rolling.

Standings:

DET:  56 GP,  27-19-10, 64 pts (8 in Conf, 3 in Central), 146 GF, 149 GA, Last 10 3-3-4, Streak Won 1

Amazing game last night against the #1 team in the league.  Unfortunately, I feel asleep midway through the 2nd period.  Khan(!) did not, and has the scoop from Babcock:

“Our team did a good job back-checking, our structure was way better,’’ Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. “If you can do it against good teams, why can’t you do it every night?’’ . . .

“I thought we stuck with it,’’ Babcock said. “Our good players were good, our specialty teams were very good and we found a way to score enough goals to win.

“Our guys, (Henrik) Zetterberg, (Pavel) Datsyuk and Bertuzzi, playing head to head against (Joe) Thornton’s line (with Patrick Marleau and Dany Heatley) had a real good night.’’ . . .

“The key was we got through the neutral zone,’’ Babcock said. “Sometimes, we’re stubborn that way, we don’t want to just make the D turn around and we force plays instead of just going in and getting on their D and creating things in the offensive zone. I thought we had good physical play in that area.’’

. . . Meech was on the power play because defenseman Niklas Kronwall did not play in the third period, after tweaking his left knee in the first period.

It is the same knee Kronwall injured Nov. 21, causing him to miss nearly 10 weeks. He appeared to reaggravate the injury in Sunday’s loss in Pittsburgh.

Babcock said Kronwall will not play Wednesday night at Anaheim.

Helene St James, Freep.com, notes that Babcock hasn’t decided who is in net tonight:

Niklas Kronwall left early after hurting an ankle and tweaking his left knee. He’s only five games into a comeback after being out 30 games because of a sprained left MCL.

Babcock said Kronwall won’t play tonight at Anaheim. Babcock said he hadn’t decided whether Jimmy Howard, who made 32 saves, would be in net against the Ducks, too.

McCosky, DetNews.com, has a good take from McClellan:

“They hunted us down pretty good,” he said. “Their forecheck was real good. There was a point in the game where they decided they were going to get in behind us and they really came after us.”

————————————————————————————————————————————
Not much in the LATimes about tonights game:

Record vs. Red Wings: 1-1-1.

Update: Teemu Selanne returned from a broken jaw Monday and scored a goal, his 17th in only 31 games in an injury-marred season. Ducks defenseman Nick Boynton cleared waivers Tuesday and remains with the team. Detroit, hampered by injuries this season after consecutive appearances in the Stanley Cup finals, is one of the teams the Ducks are chasing for the final Western Conference playoff spot.

Well done Okie.
Be interesting to see how the boys perform tonight. IF last night was the cliche “statement” kind of game we need to keep the train at full steam ahead.

Okie, just curious: where do you take the “Hot/Not” from? Why is James hot only in the last 2 games? One (me) could say he’s hot since December (.935), or January (.938), or the last 3 games (124/129).

Does anyone have a video of this alleged slew foot? It seems apparent to me that Kronwall really probably twisted a knee, ankle, or groin when his right skate decided to explode.

This guy can’t catch a break. I just said on the main page that I almost wish it had been a dirty play like a slew foot, because at least then it wouldn’t be so far from the realm of the absurd…

Moving on, Meech played well last night, and Lebda wasn’t bad, so it should be interesting to see how Ericsson responds to being back in the lineup.

This was when Buckets scored.  If you watch the NHL.com highlights video, follow Kronner as he was trailing the play.

Herm a/k/a T-Bone, the Hot/Not comes from the TSN Gameday previews.

The Hot/Not is generally worthless with regard to the Wings, most of the “19” know who is playing well and who isn’t.  Although they are good for following multigame point streaks.

I like the Hot/Not for the opponent, gives an indicator who is playing well.

Go to the game,
The fact that it is the first home game after a 6 game road trip far outweighs the 2nd of a B2B.
Ducks have had only 1 day off since playing in FLA..
Best guess:
They come up flat, negating the Wings errors due to mental fatigue.
My main concern is surviving with no injuries.

The news so far on defenseman Niklas Kronwall, who tweaked his left leg Tuesday at San Jose, is that he definitely won’t play tonight, when the Detroit Red Wings take on Anaheim. . .

Jonathan Ericsson, who was benched Tuesday, will be back in the lineup tonight. Holland said Jimmy Howard will get the start in goal.

Just noticed the glazing on the inside is very thin, and not smooth to the touch….They must have reglazed the outside and rim only.

I’ve run across this before, and it requires a brillo pad to keep the inside stain (and mold) free.

After what happened toChicago’s Niemi in VAN on the 2nd of a B2B, I don’t think it is a good decision.  Mental fatigue effects goalie’s more than skaters.  If Jimmy appears slow or comatose tonight, perhaps overplaying the puck….
I hope I’m wrong…

ANA started their backup in the 2nd of a B2B on 1/19, and Hiller had to finish the game….
I guess it can go both ways…

Khan(!) says May in for Maltby tonight, against the ‘Ucks, maybe not a bad idea:

Jimmy Howard will start in goal tonight against the Ducks. It’ll be the third time this season he has started on back-to-back nights. He is 1-1 in those games, defeating Vancouver 3-1 on Nov. 12 when Chris Osgood had the flu and losing to Chicago 4-3 in a shootout on Jan. 17.

The only change up front sees Brad May replacing Kirk Maltby.

This is the Ducks’ first game back home following a six-game road trip (3-3).

Sure.  Don’t put that beautiful pass from Rafalski to Eaves in the “best” highlights.  Nope, Flip to Buckets wasn’t quite good enough.  I guess Jr. is the best in the NHL at skating with one blade.

That’s Redonk.  I seriously thought he had had his dome smashed and was going straight up Andreas Lilja.  Really happy that was “just a blade” but the skate folded back under his knee gives me the creeps to look at it.

Rafalski’s always heads up see down the ice style is a real plus for us, no matter the occasional defensive fart.

Even Zetterberg coughed one up to give away the first goal but he and Dats looked good the rest of the way.

My countdown to 94 points, a totally bogus and arbitrary objective.  A couple of weeks ago I said I was only comfortable with a minimum of 98.

Bill, I did some number crunching back on December 4th, almost exactly 2 months ago.

Since the Lockout, here are the point totals of the 8th seeded playoff team in each conference:
.
.
...............East….....West
2009…....93…..........91
2008…....94…..........91
2007…....92…..........96
2006…....92…..........95
Average..93…..........94 rounded up the next whole point.

That is an average of 1.134 points-per-game (ppg) in the East and 1.146 ppg in the West. Through 27 games, the Wings have averaged 1.111 ppg.

There are 34 games before the Olympic break. The Wings need to average 1.176ppg over that stretch (40 points in 34 games) to be at the average ppg for 8th place in the West. And the 8th place average does not guarantee a playoff spot.

The Wings were in 10th place when I wrote that. Now, through 56 games the Wings are averaging 1.143 ppg (season), are in 8th place and have a razor thin 2 point cushion over the 9th place team. The surge in the standings is equal parts Wings’ wins in December and Calgary’s Collapse.

I don’t think 94 points is going to be enough. Can you give us a graph to 98? There are 36 games remaining and 34 points to gather.

Anaheim is 6-4-0 in their last 10 while the Kings are an amazing 9-1-0 and are riding a 7 game winning streak.

<cliche>We need the Wings that showed up last night in SJ to show up tonight and Saturday afternoon.</cliche>

In the 29 games since December 4th, the Wings garnered 34 points, or 1.172 ppg. That’s almost the 1.176 ppg I calculated it would take to be in 8th by the Olympic break. The Wings have definitely improved since the woeful months of October and November, but without Calgary falling apart, they would still be on the outside looking in.

Now, at least, there are no more teams to leapfrog. Whether the Wings make or miss the playoffs is entirely withing their control and not dependent of the failure of other teams

We desperately need a winning streak and I hope and pray it started last night.

Here are the pregame notes from the Orange County Register. 5-3-1 on the back end of B2B’s is pretty impressive.

How they match up

Ducks How they match up Red Wings*
2.70 Goals per game 2.61
3.00 Goals-against avg. 2.66
19.2% Power play 17.6%
80.6% Penalty killing 81.2%

Outlook

Detroit had suffered losses in seven of nine games entering Tuesday’s game at San Jose, but four of those losses came in overtime or a shootout to help it secure at least a point to stay in the thick of the playoff race … The Red Wings have won two of the first three meetings this season, with G Jimmy Howard in net for all three games … Detroit is 5-3-1 in the second of back-to-back games this season … C Henrik Zetterberg has three goals and four assists against the Ducks this season … Detroit entered Tuesday’s game ranked 26th in the NHL in five-on-five scoring.

My countdown to 94 points, a totally bogus and arbitrary objective.  A couple of weeks ago I said I was only comfortable with a minimum of 98.

50 wins and 110 points or bust my friend.  Anything less would be uncivilized.

Sniff, sniff. That brought tears to me eyes, WFiBL.

I love the irony of the corn dog pic, since it looks like he was giving it a BJ.

Detroit is 5-3-1 in the second of back-to-back games this season …

Just to put a wheelbarrow full of coal at the end of that rainbow…
Anaheim is 7-2 in 1st home games after a road trip,
one of those victories was against Detroit January 5.
The Wings outshot the Ducks 39-34,
Hiller kind of stole the game 4-1, including an ENG.
There were 16 minor penalties,
No PPG,
Saku Koivu opened the scoring in the 1st with an unassisted SHG

Referees
St Laurant
Watson

The Red Wings didn’t have Henrik Zetterberg or Dan Cleary

“We weren’t prepared to play, for whatever reason,” Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. “It was our worst game in a while. We let ourselves down here. I don’t think you can even find out how good you can be unless you play as hard as you’re capable of playing, and we didn’t do that tonight. Too many turnovers and poor execution, especially early.”

Gramps, how are CafePress products? I’m thinking of ordering something, my lady wants a shirt and I’ll get some magnets to give at the blog.

Herm, I have ordered some shirts through CafePress before - the graphics were sharp and the color didn’t bleed more than expected (I usually toss a color catcher sheet in with my laundry when I do bright colors and generally wash in cold water to limit bleeding and shrinking).  Same kind of quality you would expect in an department store, not cheap flimsy stuff that falls apart the first time you wash it.

I think you would be happy with it.  As for the sizing, I always size up because I need a little more room than most women, so I usually ignore sizing charts.

How is your back?
Your slapshot may be required for the playoffs.
