GDT - Game #57: Red Wings at Ducks (10:00)

Apparently this years edition of the Detroit Red Wings is indeed man enough answer the bell.  Amazing game last night against the #1 team in the league, especially after DET dug themselves into a two goal deficit in the first ten minutes.  All of which prompted Babcock to ponder aloud:  “Our structure was way better. If you can do it against good teams why can’t you do it every night? That’s what we’ve got to talk about. Hopefully we’re on the path to getting better.”

On the glass half-empty side of last nights game, Kronwall sits tonight:  “He got slew-footed early in the game,” Babcock said. “He left the game (in the third period) and that’s not a good sign. He won’t play (tonight against Anaheim).”  Big E(rror) may get out of the doghouse early.

Huge game tonight for ANA (6-4 in last ten), who sit in 11th place, 5 points from 8th. ANA are coming off a 3-0 at FLA Monday.  Hopefully, DET can keep the train rolling.

Amazing game last night against the #1 team in the league.  Unfortunately, I feel asleep midway through the 2nd period.  Khan(!) did not, and has the scoop from Babcock:

“Our team did a good job back-checking, our structure was way better,’’ Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. “If you can do it against good teams, why can’t you do it every night?’’ . . .

“I thought we stuck with it,’’ Babcock said. “Our good players were good, our specialty teams were very good and we found a way to score enough goals to win.

“Our guys, (Henrik) Zetterberg, (Pavel) Datsyuk and Bertuzzi, playing head to head against (Joe) Thornton’s line (with Patrick Marleau and Dany Heatley) had a real good night.’’ . . .

“The key was we got through the neutral zone,’’ Babcock said. “Sometimes, we’re stubborn that way, we don’t want to just make the D turn around and we force plays instead of just going in and getting on their D and creating things in the offensive zone. I thought we had good physical play in that area.’’

. . . Meech was on the power play because defenseman Niklas Kronwall did not play in the third period, after tweaking his left knee in the first period.

It is the same knee Kronwall injured Nov. 21, causing him to miss nearly 10 weeks. He appeared to reaggravate the injury in Sunday’s loss in Pittsburgh.

Babcock said Kronwall will not play Wednesday night at Anaheim.

Helene St James, Freep.com, notes that Babcock hasn’t decided who is in net tonight:

Niklas Kronwall left early after hurting an ankle and tweaking his left knee. He’s only five games into a comeback after being out 30 games because of a sprained left MCL.

Babcock said Kronwall won’t play tonight at Anaheim. Babcock said he hadn’t decided whether Jimmy Howard, who made 32 saves, would be in net against the Ducks, too.

McCosky, DetNews.com, has a good take from McClellan:

“They hunted us down pretty good,” he said. “Their forecheck was real good. There was a point in the game where they decided they were going to get in behind us and they really came after us.”

Not much in the LATimes about tonights game:

Record vs. Red Wings: 1-1-1.

Update: Teemu Selanne returned from a broken jaw Monday and scored a goal, his 17th in only 31 games in an injury-marred season. Ducks defenseman Nick Boynton cleared waivers Tuesday and remains with the team. Detroit, hampered by injuries this season after consecutive appearances in the Stanley Cup finals, is one of the teams the Ducks are chasing for the final Western Conference playoff spot.
