GDT - Game #58: Red Wings at Kings (4:00)

Matinee today against the Kings, the hottest team in the Western Conference, winners of a franchise record-tying eight straight games. Anze Kopitar is on fire, he has at least one point in each game of the Kings’ winning streak (7 G, 8 A), and he tied a career high with a four-point game on Thursday (2 G, 2 A).  The U.S. Olympian, Jonathan Quick, who leads W.C. goalies with 33 wins, has a 2.20 goals-against average in the Kings eight game win streak.  Hopefully, Quick will play to his usual form against the Wings, he is 1-5-0 with a 3.19 GAA in his career against DET.

The Wings task isn’t made any easier as Niklas Kronwall will not play after having injured his knee during the Shark game.  With the Wings reaching desperation measures, they have not won back-to-back games in nearly a month (Jan. 7-9), Howard is in net again today.

The W.C. standings have COL in 6th with 68 pts, NSH and CGY round out the 8 with 66 pts.  DET has 64, DAL and ANA each have 61.  It would take a major miracle for DET to reach the 4th spot (PHX 75).  Given DET’s play of late, 3-4-3, it may well take a minor miracle for DET just to make the playoffs this season.

Standings:

DET:  57 GP,  27-20-10, 64 pts (9 in Conf, 3 in Central), 147 GF, 152 GA, Last 10 3-4-3, Streak Lost 1

Khan(!) says Jimmy starting, no Kronner, and Maltby in for May:

Defenseman Niklas Kronwall (knee) did not skate and will not play Saturday against the Los Angeles Kings (4 p.m., Fox Sports Net Detroit). . .

Jimmy Howard will start in net for Detroit. Kirk Maltby will be back in the lineup, replacing Brad May.

Here are the lines they skated with:

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Holmstrom (Franzen working in)
Bertuzzi-Filppula-Cleary
Draper-Helm-Eaves (Leino working in)
Maltby-Miller-Williams (May working in)

Lidstrom-Rafalski
Stuart-Ericsson
Meech-Lebda

Howard
Osgood

———————————————————————————————————————————

From the LATimes.com:

With a point today, the Kings’ Anze Kopitar, who has seven goals and eight assists in his last eight games, would set a career best with points in nine consecutive games. When he scores a goal, the Kings are 17-3. Goaltender Jonathan Quick is 13-3 in his last 16 games. Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk has four goals and four assists in his last six games. The Red Wings, struggling after reaching the Stanley Cup finals in each of the previous two seasons, are 1-2 on their trip and 3-4-3 in their last 10 games.

Morning Okie, well done once again.
I’m on the fence about the El Bee today. I have things I could, would or should do… but ya know.
The streaking hot Kings and our flat lining team don’t make me too anxious for the game… heh.

Thank you Jeff for your hard work today.

As for me, I’m keeping the faith. You know, believing in things unseen. Bitches.

Thanks, Okie.

I think Cal and his wife are going to the game this afternoon, so he could be wearing the gamewrecker tag.

Miracle shmiracle. Hard work will be rewarded, except when it’s not. Like when they run up against a hot goalie. But other than that, hard work will be rewarded.

I’m channeling my inner Babcock this morning. That, or there were too many shots of espresso in my americano this morning.

the Wings have traded Ville Leino to Philly for a fifth round pick in 2011 and defenseman Ole-Kristian Tollefsen ($600,000). No word from the Detroit media just yet (of course).

Detroit, MI… Detroit Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Holland today announced that the club has traded forward Ville Leino to the Philadelphia Flyers. Not really a surprise.  A healthy scratch for the last 6 or 7 games.

With the way this team has been playing lately it’s hardly a gamewrecker tag anymore.  More like an “enabling assist”.  Anyway we’ll still be cheering for the Wings and hoping for the best.  2 days of rest and an afternoon game may provide the background for some fiestyness.  Either that or it could be a blow-out… and not the good kind.

So, how much cap rooms is freed up by this and the waiving of Tollefsen?

Not really a surprise at all. Sometimes a player, for whatever reason, just doesn’t fit. I have thought that from the beginning. To me he never seemed to care enough. The bar is set pretty high when you finally get your chance to show “how bad do you want it?”

Apparently not bad enough.  If he was good enough to make the grade he would still be in the system.

I think it is more about staying under the roster limits without having to clear waivers when sent down.  I am assuming of course that Tolefson can be sent down without the waiver wire.

Just a reminder:
I was the first to point out that Leino was E/Conf material.
