GDT - Game #64: Red Wings host Predators (7:30)

Panic in Detroit? With the Wings fighting for their playoff lives Wednesday night against the Canucks, the Red Wings failed in spectacular fashion. If you won’t take my word for it, this is what Coach Babcock had to say after that disaster: “We were poor. We were poor in goal, we were poor in the back end and we were poor upfront, we were poor in the work ethic department,” “We didn’t look like a team that’s dying to get into the playoffs in any way, shape or form.” At Thursdays practice, he restated his sentiment: “I just, I didn’t like any of it. “I liked one line; I didn’t like any of the others. We’ll see what happens tomorrow. … I can’t explain it. It’s unacceptable. I said it last night, and it’s still unacceptable today.”
But Coach Babcock isn’t only pointing the finger at the players, he rightly recognizes his responsibility as well: “For a long time this year we had so many injuries that we just battled to stay alive,” he said. “We don’t now. There’s no reason for us not to be a good hockey club. So will and determination, leadership and coaching, all these things, you look at them and you can’t give them a very good mark.”
The general consensus, out amongst the intertubes, has been that 94 pts is the magic number to make the playoffs in the W.C.. DET have 70 pts, and 19 games left to play. The issue then, is whether or not the Wings can manage to win 12 of the remaining 19 games (.631 win%). An objective look at their 63 game sample suggest it may be a very tall task. DET are 29-22-12 and have a .556 pt % (.460 win %). Granted, the Wings have been ridiculously shorthanded for the vast majority of the season, so the 63 game sample is skewed. But that certainly does not explain Wednesday nights embarrassment, and general lack of work ethic. Coach Babcock is spot on - - it is unacceptable, and un-Red Wing like.
There are games left, and the Wings have time to right the ship; but that time is right the fuch now. Coach is juggling lines, and banishing non-performers; E-52 is in the pressbox tonight, and Howard will be looking to revert to form. As a certain Sailor once told me, nothing is ever easy. Every game counts, especially against teams the Wings might catch, tonight it is Bubba. L.G.R.W. No more excuses.
Standings:
DAL got smoked by hard-charging STL last night (6-1), and Bubba had an impressive win against LAK (4-2).
Suddenly, there are 7 teams fighting for 2 spots.

Bert dropped to 3 line. Lebda in tonight, paired with Pylon; E-52 watching from the pressbox, nothing personal according to Uncle Mike:
Jimmy Howard, pulled during the second period of Wednesday’s 6-3 loss to Vancouver, will start Friday against Nashville. The only change in the lineup, coach Mike Babcock said, will see Brett Lebda replace Jonathan Ericsson on defense.
“I thought Ericsson was fine last night,’’ Babcock said. “Lebda’s been a fine player and has played well with (Andreas) Lilja over the years and he’s back in with Lilja.’‘
“I liked one line (Wednesday), I didn’t like any of the others,’’ Babcock said. “We’ll see what happens tomorrow.’’ . . .
Franzen-Datsyuk-Holmstrom
Cleary-Zetterberg-Williams
Miller-Filppula-Bertuzzi

Helene St James, Freep.com:
“One of the things we’re trying to figure out is why we can’t be more consistent,” captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. “Especially when we get behind, we’ve been able to battle back in some games, but in some of the games, we just haven’t had that second gear to get back on teams.” . . .
“You’re all right one night and then you’re not the next night,” coach Mike Babcock said. “Good teams are good every night. Now, every once in a while things don’t go your way, but that wasn’t the case last night. ... It was we weren’t good enough and we didn’t compete hard enough for long enough to be successful, and that includes goaltending, defense, forwards and coaching.” . . .
————————————————————————————————————————-
Dana Wakiji, Detnews.com:
Coach Mike Babcock still was angry Thursday about the way his team played in a 6-3 loss to Vancouver.
“I can’t explain it,” he said. “It’s unacceptable. Usually I’m way better when I’ve slept on something, but for a team that had 20 games left and 12 at home and a big game with a team that had played the night before, to play like that is un-Red Wing-like and it can’t happen. We’ve talked about it, addressed it and now we’ve got to do something about it.” . . .
For a guy who’s played two games in a little over a year, Lilja doesn’t seem to have missed a beat. In the two games since his return from a severe concussion, he has one assist and is plus-1.
“Lils is a real good player,” Babcock said. “We understand that and know that he’s a big body.
“The one thing about being big, you always go out there, you’re 6-4 every shift and 240 or whatever. I thought he made lots of good plays last night. You can just tell that Lils is talking to ‘em and so suddenly they’re better in their own zone, and that’s positive for us.”

“I didn’t have them prepared—you can’t play like that if you’re prepared. They weren’t prepared.” (Babcock)
Hmmm….... Uncle Mike, not to second guess or anything, but I wonder if that may have something to do with what you have been FOCUSED on for the past few weeks, as in NOT the Red Wings.
But, what the hey….. you and Sid got yer gold medal. Enjoy.

As long as we are quoting sailors, a sailor also once said “obey the first rule of sailing, never piss into the wind”. Mr. Wingnut, I believe you just brok the first rule of sailing.

It certainly does seem like now that the Olympics are over that suddenly Babcock is all hard ass and really invested. Funny it didn’t seem that way for most of the season..

FIX IT.
Or else I’m briging a .22 and a high-powered scope to H2H to get some frickin’ motivation into this team. If Uncle Mike can’t motivate them, Uncle Remington will.
And where the hell is Lilja4ever when you need him around to gloat?

Thankfully a place to come and flagellate myself with other like minded, obsessed idiots.
I wasn’t going to post this yet again, but each day it becomes more and more obvious what a good thing winning is. At game 52 the Kings and ‘Yotes were right with this pack of non-performers but have since played in a different universe (remember when the Wings played the Kings with an opportunity to jump 1 point ahead of them?).
The Flamers and and Cold Wings have moved basically sideways and let a gaggle of other teams catch up with them, not the least of which is Saint Louise. Winning is awesome.
Just concentrating on the POS teams…. RSV.

First time I’ve stumbled across the Bleacher Report, but they have a good analysis of the road ahead:
With 70 points and just 19 games remaining, it is estimated that the Wings will need to accrue somewhere between 24 and 28 points in that span in order to secure the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.
If that estimate is correct, that’s a minimum of 12 wins in 19 games.
Now, a couple overtime losses could be sustained (and likely will be as the Wings lead the league in that department with 12) that could still add to their point total and thus, perhaps reduce their needed wins to 11.
But, considering that eight of those next 19 games are against opponents who themselves may be battling for the eighth and final spot (Calgary, Nashville, Minnesota, and St. Louis) turning these matchups into three point games could prove fatal to the Wings’ playoff hopes.
The margin for error is razor thin, and though they still cling to the eighth seed, there’s too many teams within striking distance to think that anything short of a monumental turnaround to their season is going to allow them to hang on to it.

This is what will be their downfall. The first tiebreaker is wins. I foresee us beating the Blackhawks on April 11th, ending up in a 4 way tie for 8th place, and not making the playoffs because of too many OTLs and not enough Ws.

Jeff I was looking at the same obsessed pcts and games remaining this morning and updated this chart I made 8 games ago with 1/3 of the season left. Since then, 27 GR, the Wings have played .500 and if continue like the past 8 games playing .500 over the remaining 19 games, will finish with 89 points.
Need at least 11-5-3.

Blame Canada if Wings miss playoffs
Yzerman and Babcock deserve gold, but Olympic pressure didn’t help Detroit
DETROIT—Who would have thought that after 18 consecutive postseason appearances—including back-to-back stops in the Finals the past two seasons—the Detroit Red Wings would begin March fighting for their playoff lives?
But that’s exactly where they are and, well, it’s a bit unnerving for the good folks of Hockeytown.
“Injuries,” 22-year-old fan Andrew Nendrzychi said. “We’ve had a lot of injuries this year. More than I can ever remember.”
Indeed, with seven players placed on injured reserve before Christmas—including star forward Henrik Zetterberg—the team started 2010 having already surpassed the 187 man games missed because of injuries it suffered all of last year.
But I gotta tell ya, while I don’t question whether injuries have contributed to Detroit’s current predicament, I can’t ignore the nagging little voice in the back of my head that keeps repeating two words: Blame Canada.
I don’t mean in the way Red Wings senior vice president Jimmy Devellano blames Canada. (He feels the compacted NHL schedule to accommodate the Olympics is part of the reason for his team’s rash of injuries.) No, I’m blaming Canada because so many people who are critical to the Wings’ success were involved with Team Canada.
I’m not hating because the U.S, finished second. I’m just offering a theory as to why the Wings are barely holding on to eighth in the Western Conference.
Usually when we talk about the Olympics, we focus on the toll it takes on the players and the split loyalties between NHL team and country that occurs when a tournament is held midseason. Then there’s the drop in focus that can happen when teams take two weeks off. But as I peel back the layers regarding the Red Wings, I can’t help wondering if it was some of the team’s leaders, and not the players, who were distracted most by the Olympics.

Great write up again, but WTF 41-14 !! That is Smokin’ Hot! I’m sure we were bitchin’ about giving up a 2 goal lead in the 3rd and relying on a late goal to pull it out.
It is all about perspective, isn’t it? Last seasons mantra was “the next three goals are huge” - - but, more often as not, DET could score three (they averaged 3.62/game).
This seasons 2.56 is anemic by comparison. Note that Hoss/Hudler/Sammy had about 70 goals at this point last season which would equal 165 +70 = 235/64= 3.67 g/g. The obvious conclusion is no-one is picking up the slack, but thats not true. Look at 08-09 going into game 64:
Pavel Datsyuk 62 25 50 75 28
Henrik Zetterberg 58 24 32 56 14
Brian Rafalski 63 8 43 51 14
Nicklas Lidstrom 60 12 32 44 24
Johan Franzen 52 25 14 39 12
This season:
Pavel - 17
Hank -17
TPH - 7
Raffi - 4
Mule - 5 (discount for long term injury)
So it isn’t so much that the “team” hasn’t “picked up the slack”, rather that, as Uncle Mike says, your best players have to be your best players.
Granted this seasons GAA (2.60) is +0.34 compared to last seasons 2.94.
G/G 3.63 - 2.56 = -1.07
GA/G 2.94 - 2.56 = +0.34
But the difference is -0.73.
Which all goes to point out, as Capt. Obvious told me; Wings aren’t winning because they cannot freaking score.
Next three goals are huge is now an understatement. The next three goals are likely all DET will get.
E-52 may, or should be, seeing a whole lot of the press box.

Seems the lawyers over at Four Habs Fans have co-opted RWBills clusteraux to the playoffs, but have not yet appropriated the peleton of suck:
As a result of all that, your clusterfuck this morning is Habs in 10th, and Atlanta holding the 8th spot. Atlanta? Atlanta.

in the next two seasons things will have to change drastically, this team is misplaced in time, it has been almost the same players for too many seasons now, and offcourse as the time moves ahead so do the teams in the leauge, others rejuvenated, adapted,inovated,....
but Wings are the same old team, and evolution is mercyless, there are too many players on the team whos time is passing rapidly bye, many players whos time hasnt even come yet,and just about half a dosen of players that are in their actual prime years,
that is a team that cannot survive the change of competition
so in the next two seasons I believe that we will need to aquire 2 wingers and a defenseman, all below 30 years of age and actually proven to be consistent at playing their game, I know its easy to talk, but future could be grim if a big change doesnt come

this is an excellent point. the Wings were pioneers of their puck-control high-finesse style in the 90s and first half of 00s. so other teams reacted and adapted to compete. now it’s time for the Wings to react and adapt to THOSE teams to be able to compete with them consistently.
it’s like the arms race - you make better armor, your enemy makes a better bullet…so you make better armor, and then your enemy makes a better bullet.
the Wings were the better bullet. now other teams have armored up and the Wings are the same old bullet.

I’m not disagreeing, but what you’re talking about costs between $7-25M in cap space, depending on how “proven” they have to be. I wouldn’t mind if the Wings went after Anton Volchenkov (age 28) in the offseason, but I think he’s going to be due for a big raise over the $3.2M salary (and $2.5M cap hit) from this season.
Frolov would also be great, but he’s going to command somewhere in the $4.75-$6M range.
Colby Armstrong, Thomas Plekanec, Lee Stempniak, Marek Svatos, are all 27 and are probably going to be individually affordable, but they also come with the risk of being somebody not as proven.
I’m personally pulling hard for Ritola and Tatar to develop, as well as Kindl. I think they can be our two young wingers and young D man that make a big difference. It sucks that the Wings haven’t had a can’t-miss draft pick in just about forever, but unless we’re talking about Kenny blowing up the lineup and getting rid of some big names, I can’t see where that happens.

the list of U/RFAs after this season is huge. if there is to be a shakeup, this is the off-season to do it.
Helm
Miller
Eaves
Williams
Meech
Lidstrom
Holmstrom
Bertuzzi
Lilja
Maltby
Lebda
May
that’s a lot of money sitting on the table.

That’s true. Honestly, what’s your take on them? Individually, here goes:
Helm: Re-signed, $500K-$1M more cap space than last contract
Miller: Casualty
Eaves: Re-signed for about $500K more
Williams: Imminently replaceable (even though I like him)
Meech: Spare parts, bye bye
Lidstrom: Signs for $4.5M (please, please, please)
Holmstrom: Re-signs for the $1.5M range (savings of $750K)
Bertuzzi: Tougher call than Williams, but bye-bye
Lilja: If he’s willing to sign for the same $1.25M he’s at now or possibly as high as $1.5, I’d take him.
Maltby: Brought on as assistant coach in charge of checking your ego at the door for the sake of the team
Lebda: HA!
May: Goodbye.
That gives us, what, about $7M to play with for next year and a roster that looks something like this?
Holmstrom-Datsyuk-Zetterberg
Franzen-Filppula-???
Cleary-Helm-???
Eaves-Abdelkader-Draper
Lidstrom-Rafalski
Stuart-Kronwall
Lilja-Ericsson (Kindl?)
I put Cleary on the third and Eaves on the fourth as placeholders. I know they can each move up a line, but I’d rather have the flexibility to have somebody above both of them on the depth chart. Of course, you can also switch Homer and Cleary around, but the point is that I think we need Wingers for the 2nd, and 3rd lines.
I think with the need to fill other depth gaps, we’re probably looking in the $3-4M skill player range for a splash offseason signing.
Note, there’s an enormous chance I have no idea what the hell I’m talking about.

About damn time. He should have done it the first week of February. February had to be one of the worst months I can remember without resorting to Wikipedia. Two wins and four losses in eleven days. He needed to perform those sacrifices during that awful west coast roadie.

Spot on JJ. Goal scoring is the glaringly obvious problem. See Above.
I’d even keep Bert at 1.5, his 35 pts (15 goals) and his size make him a value on the 3 line, plus he can move up in case of injury.
I’d spend the rest on one very talented Winger for the 2 line.
The Wings need goals in the worst possible way.
And Stonehands: Uncle Mike is resorting to animal sacrifices? Whatever the fuch works.

Keep Helm, Miller, Eaves (what additions those last 2 have been), Lidstrom, Holmstrom, and.. *gulp*... maybe even Lilja.
Say goodbye to Williams, Meech, Bertuzzi, Maltby, Lebda, and May. Sayonara.
That’d be my wish list.
JJ if they let Miller go I will never, ever forgive Kenny, Mike, or Steve. Ever.

At least in the peloton we still have a chance. I guess it’s better than being in the autobus with C-bus, or God forbid, fighting it out with edmonton for the lantern rouge.

everybody keeps forgetting about Tollefsen sitting in GR. he’s 25, 6’2” 211 lbs, has played 160+ NHL games for an overall -6 (not bad considering he was a BJ), is not shy of fighting, and does this to people:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzEtEXmyDjo
plenty of his fights listed in the related videos, too.
I want to see him and Kronwall play together. 400 pounds of asskicking defensemen running around the ice knocking people into next week. I can’t wait!
he hasn’t had a stellar career, but he’s just the kind of solid young player the Wings frequently manage to fit right into the system and extract his full potential.

You know, you’re right. Despite that you’ve been singing his praises for the past few days, I still overlooked him, my bad. Of course, he’s an RFA at season’s end. I would assume that he probably fits the signing as a depth defenseman role. I wonder if he’d take another $600k contract. Maybe bump him up to $800K and let him replace Ericsson on the depth chart, who we can trade for draft pick(s).
I know a lot of people don’t want to give up on Jonny Ericsson just yet, but he’s been just terrible this year. Tollefsen is younger than Big E and has more NHL experience. Maybe Jonny has more potential than Tollefsen, but OKT seems like he needs miles less coaching. I lean towards keeping him, but if he’s gone, I’m not crying. Also, if keeping him means we can’t afford a 2nd-line winger, then I say cut him loose.
JJ if they let Miller go I will never, ever forgive Kenny, Mike, or Steve. Ever.
Miller is a battler and he’s been forced to play in situations above his skill set for most of the year. I like his grit and determination, but he needs a lot of polish. There’s just a lot about him that would make him a healthy scratch on my ideal Red Wings lineup most nights. I guess we could keep him around in case there’s an injury on the 4th line, but I don’t want him near a power play or even a 2nd liner’s minutes until he can consistently get past making 65% of a really good play.
Posted by J.J. from Kansas on 03/05/10 at 04:28 PM ET
Ericsson was told to play defense upon coming over to the US…how feasible would it be to see him play forward for a spell during training camp?

If i could get greedy with my 2nd line Winger - - I’d pick one that tries to be like Homer, park ass in crease (but faster).

Like Ville Leino or Jonathon Ericsson, for instance.
