GDT - Game #65: Red Wings at Blackhawks (12:30)

“Detroit has been Chicago’s nemesis. The Blackhawks have challenged the Red Wings but have never been able to overtake them. But this year, Chicago leads the Central. The United Center will be filled with 20,000-plus fans screaming their lungs out. It will be raucous,” so says Mike “Doc” Emrick. Doc is also a subscriber to Uncle Mike’s theory: “Detroit is starting to get healthy and you wouldn’t want to run into them in the first round. They will be one of the foremost interesting teams to watch down the homestretch.”
All of that presupposes that the Wings can survive the Peloton of Suck. Since the Olympic break DET looked very good at COL, then imploded against VAN, and followed that up with am impressive win against NSH. DET, when they are on their game, look dangerous. But, shockingly, their play has been erratic and inconsistent. The stress train siren, she is calling again, and it is sure to be a wild ride. Todays destination CHI, where the ‘Hawks are an obscene 25-6-2.
Matinee today bitches, all aboard.

For a change, Uncle Mike is sticking with his winning formula, Khan(!)
Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock will stick with the same lineup and line combinations he used Friday against Nashville for Sunday’s game in Chicago (12:30 p.m., NBC). Brett Lebda stays in on defense, but Babcock said Jonathan Ericsson will be back in the lineup Tuesday against Calgary.
Here are the lines and defense pairings:
Franzen-Datsyuk-Holmstrom
Cleary-Zetterberg-Williams
Miller-Filppula-Bertuzzi
Draper-Helm-EavesLidstrom-Rafalski
Kronwall-Stuart
Lebda-Lilja
Meech-Ericsson (scratches)Howard (starting)
OsgoodThe Blackhawks are coming off a 6-3 win over Vancouver on Friday. They are 6-1 in their last seven and tied for the top spot in the Western Conference with San Jose. Each team has 91 points. Washington leads the league with 94 points.
Then there are these comments:
The Red Wings were much more physical in Friday’s win over Nashville than in their previous game, an ugly loss to Vancouver. If they continue to play that way, the offense will come, Babcock said.
“Dan Cleary, Bert, all these guys, they got to be way more physical and harder to play against. When you do that the goals will come,” Babcock said. “Worry about playing hard, worry about taking the puck to the net, playing good without it, and the rest will happen for you.”
Penalty-killing improves
Being able to use role players like Darren Helm, Patrick Eaves and Drew Miller on the penalty-kill, instead of over-using stars Henrik Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Franzen has made a huge difference. The Red Wings have allowed only three power-play goals on 34 chances in their past 11 games and rank 15th in the NHL in penalty-killing (82.1 percent).
That’s a significant improvement from last season (78.3 percent in the regular season, 73.2 percent in the playoffs).
“It’s come a million miles since the start of the year and since last year it’s done a really good job,” Babcock said. “Your goaltending bails out your penalty-kill lots of times.
“But you add it all together and I think we got a good scheme. We got guys that are blocking shots, like Eaves and Helm and Miller. The back end’s done a good job. With (Andreas) Lilja coming back it helps solidify our third pair and gives us another penalty-killer.”

For a change, it will be the same. Love it.
Won’t watch because I’ll be at a party, but I hope the Wings can play the way they have potential to play.

Williams made Z and Buckets look much better than ‘Tuzzi. Sorry to say it Unibomber, but on the second line you don’t belong.

Screw the hawks, its time the wings take it to these little ucks and show who their daddy is like last years games. The hawks are getting a bit too bold, for my liking and its time the wings spank them around today. If they play physical like Friday they can do it. Franzen should steal 20 cents mouthpiece to set the tone early today.

For a while now, Iv’e been thing that McCosky at the Detroit News, was a much better Digger than his counter-parts; that is until today when I read this:
Even though Chicago and San Jose have been resting comfortably at the top of the heap all season, and the Wings are fighting like dogs just to make the playoffs—there isn’t such a wide disparity between them.
Really?
CHI are 2 in scoring and 1 in GAA, they rank in the top 5 in every major stat category except PP (7). DET, not so much.
DET: .563 point% (13), 2.59 g/g (19), 2.59 ga/g (10), 0.88 5-5 f/a (25), 19.1 pp (10), 82.1 pk (15), 33.1 s/g (2), 30.2 sa/g (15), 51.4 fo% (7).
CHI: .715 point% (2), 3.17 g/g (2), 2.37 ga/g (1), 1.29 5-5 f/a (4), 22.2 pp (7), 86.2 pk (5), 34.0 s/g (1), 24.2 sa/g (1), 55.9 fo% (3).
Yes, I know DET’s season numbers are skewed because of injury. But they are what they are.
Geebuuzus, I am all for rooting for the home team - - but lets be a little realistic too.
Todays game is an opportunity for DET to make a statement - - and hopefully an emphatic one.

Thank you, Okie.
I’m looking for a Wings team that wants to make a statement today.
NBC, national tv, center stage, Red Wings / Blackhawks, original six, playoff runs in motion, Detroit healthy and claiming they belong - Uncle Mike talking “preparation” and what is & isn’t “acceptable”.
ALLLLLLL a-BOOOOOOOOOOOOOAARRRRDDDD!!!

Really, not much disparity between the Hawks and Detroit? Do these guys watch or even pay attention? That’s almost Khan!-like.
Not saying Detroit can’t compete and win, but the first 65 games not even close.
Hossa 40 games under his belt already? An impressive 19+19, how we could sure use another pt per game.

Great point about Eaves and Helm and MIller successfully employed on what has been a rockin’ good PK the last… 30? or more… If Z and Dats have energy for skating hard on regular shifts they are dominant against any line in the league.
Adding Franzen has really bumped up the scoring capability to additional lines, finally.

^^ More from above ^^
Yes, I know DET’s season numbers are skewed because of injury. But they are what they are.
I got to thinking - - scarry I know - - we all should agree that DET’s number are skewed because of the absurd rash of injury.
BUT, they are also skewed because of - - Osgood’s terrible play:
Chris Osgood 22, 7-8-4, 2.97, 0.890. 2.97 would have DET ranked 23 in GA/G
Jimmah, on the other hand is 46, 23-14-8, 2.33, 0.925. 2.33 would have DET ranked 1 in GA/G.
Note: I am pretty certain E/N are included in team GA/A, but not in goalie stats, so the numbers are a little off.
BUT - - Jimmah’s point percentage 31/46 = 0.6739 would have DET ranked 4th in the league, behind CHI, ahead of PIT.
Yes, Virginia, there is great reason for some optimism. We are getting healthy, and getting hugely improved goal-tending.
If I had tons of time, I would go back and pull out the team stats for all of Jimmah’s games. But that isn’t going to happen.

I am not all that excited going into today’s game. What hasn’t been discussed is whether or not Nashville brought their best game on Friday. I do expect Chicago to be playing their A game today. Even if the Wings play them head to head, with both teams showing up, Chicago (like 27 other teams) will have the edge in goaltending.
That is my gut feeling…..and I hope I am wrong.
NHL games played before 7:00 PM shouldn’t even count.

^^ More ^^
IF, I repeat, IF DET can get their G/G up around 2.75 (which right now would have them ranked 10th ) for the remainder of the season - - should they get in the playoffs, they will be a force. (Assuming Jimmah holds to form).
I’ll track the numbers since the Olympic break, and continue till the end of the season:
COL 3-2 win
VAN 3-6 loss
NSH 5-2 win
AVG: 3.67

The Leastern Conference is home of the backchecking dynamo, Rosby. It must be a defensively solid conference. /sarcasm
You’d think that at some point a team would emulate the success of the Devils in the Eastern Conference. Just like in the West we have teams modeling themselves after the Organ-I-zation.

If the Lebda/Lilja pairing plays today like they played against Nashville, I wonder if Uncle Mike will keep his promise and let Ericsson in another game. Those two played one of the best 3rd-pair games the Wings have seen all season and I don’t want them broken up until somebody pinches me and I wake up and realize Lebda still sucks.
