GDT - Game #69: Red Wings at Flames (9:30)

Three straight wins, the impossible dream, right? The Wings have not won 3 straight in almost 3 months, since Dec. 11-17. Ironically, the last time DET was in position to win three straight was on March 9th, when they hosted CGY, and played well early, before ending in an ugly, heartless 4-2 loss. But, the Wings are heating up lately, winners of four of their last five and six of eight. The team claim they are looking for redemption this evening.
Meanwhile, CGY lost on the road at VAN last night 3-1. Kiprusoff was in net last night, but got the hook after the 1st - - more out of mercy because his team was flat early on. He faced 20 SOG and surrendered all 3 VAN goals in the 1st period. CGY played inspired the remainder of the game, they outshot VAN 27-8 over the final 40 minutes, including 11-0 in the third period. By virtue of their loss, CGY have slipped to 9th.
The Wings now hold the 8 spot entering the game tonight, it would be nice if they could keep it for more than 1 day. Another huge game tonight.
Standings:
Both VAN and MIN helped the cause yesterday. VAN beat CGY 3-1, and MIN beat STL 4-2. LAK failed to beat NSH 3-2. Today, the Wings are in.

Khan(!) has a whole lotta nothing in his Wings article today:
The Flames lead the season series 2-1. The road team has won all three games. The Flames stunned the Red Wings with three unanswered goals in the third period for a 4-2 win at Joe Louis Arena on March 9.
“I think we owe Calgary, especially after they embarrassed us in our own barn in the third period,’’ Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard said. “We’ll be prepared and come out and play strong.’‘
Said coach Mike Babcock: “It’s a big opportunity for us to go to Calgary and make amends for the way we played when they were here.’‘
The Red Wings are 5-2 since the Olympic break, including a 3-2 overtime win over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.
Special teams have been strong the past several weeks. They have scored at least one power-play goal in nine consecutive games (11 for 35, 31.4 percent). They have killed 43-of-46 shorthanded situations (93.5 percent) over their past 15 games.
“Our penalty-kill has gotten better and better as the year’s gone on,’’ Babcock said. “Guys have done a real good job of blocking shots, we’re getting good goaltending in those situations.
“The power play since Mule (Johan Franzen), (Niklas) Kronwall and (Jason) Williams have come back (from injuries), we just have so much more depth. It’s made it a lot easier for us to generate offense.’‘
Winners of their past two games, the Red Wings have not won three in a row since their season-high four-game winning streak from Dec. 11-17.
——————————————————————————————————————
Steve McFarlane, Calgary Sun, didn’t mince words about the Flame’s performance last night:
No one expected the Flames to win all their remaining games.
Counting on seeing their best effort on a nightly basis, however, isn’t too much to ask.
What makes the 3-1 loss to the Canucks so tough to swallow is the fact the Flames were trying. They never quit.
They were simply dismantled by a better team — one that has taken full control of the Northwest Division and made the Flames’ goal of just making the playoffs a little more difficult in the process — in a span of 17 minutes they never recovered from.
“They were obviously a lot better than us in the first period,” said Flames captain Jarome Iginla, whose team was behind 3-0 by the first intermission. “We weren’t ready to go full kilter the way we have been lately. We’ve been jumping on teams early lately.

I believe it was Bowman who said if you’re performing well you should add your PK and PP percent, and the result should be over 100.
so this gives them a tidy 124.9 over that stretch. having red hot special teams is going to be huge WHEN the Wings are in the playoffs. seeing Lidstrom picking it up is so comforting.
Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach on 03/15/10 at 08:59 AM ET
It can be the closest to the playoffs we’ll get. Or we can just win this fauxing thing and get to the real stuff.
No loss, not even in OT (they would pass us on wins). Dare I say, must-win on the road?

Worrying is our raison d’etre.
Silly, I know, because there is no way that if Detroit just plays 0.500 for the rest of the season they can miss the playoffs, because Minnesota would have to play like 0.800 ball to catch up, and what are the chances ... game 163 ... freaking Randy Marsh ...

Wasn’t it adding your PP rank and PK rank, and if the result wasn’t ten or lower, he lit somebody’s ass on fire?
Whatever. Huge game. Again.
And this thread was stuck in under my admittedly massive nose, thus causing me to post five posts in a row in the previous one. Okie, I’m holding YOU responsible. Damn good work anyhow.

We’ll know the character of the 09-10 wings after this
game, because threy still have every oportunity to make the playoffs if they mail this game in and the flames don’t.
If the wings blow this game, they’re still the favorite to win
almost every ge left, and they have two “four point” games vs. Nashvile. Calgary doesn’t have those luxuries and is probably out of the playoffs of they lose in regulation tonight. If the wings mail another one in, and fail to bring the streak to 3, I still expect them to make the playoffs, but they won’t go far because the heart and work ethic that made them champions is still MIA.

Is that some sort of baseball reference?
Yesterday, ESPN America, which is among my most reliable sources for North American sports, showed Collega Basketball (almost) all day despite several good hockey game alternatives. College Basketball is a completely useless sport in my opinion, and I rate it above baseball. I just can’t find excitement in that sport.
But I suspect that North American sports fans feel the same way about soccer.

It is BIG, and I am looking forward to it…
Not a good position for any team because struggling for/struggling to… hold onto the final playoff position means you have to play playoff hockey for the remaining 16 games of the regular season. The fatigue factor weighs in here, bigtime, going into that first round. I remember before the Salary cap, Scotty would rotate 4 players in the press box to give everyone a break trying to avoid that fatigue going into the first round.
Nice preview, Jeff.

That didn’t always work out so well for him. In his 9 seasons of coaching the Wings, they were eliminated 4 times in the 1st or 2nd rounds.
I seem to recall many of the early round Wings choke jobs were at the hands of teams that were playing playoff hockey for the last month of the regular season in order to just qualify for the playoffs.

We can agree on that, Primis. I enjoyed watching quite a lot of NBA in the late 80’s and early 90’s, but I can’t sit through a NBA match these days. Either something happened to the game or I became more sensitive about wasting time. College basketball is at least watchable.

RWBill, I meant to post the other day when you mentioned OCC. California’s continual budget crisis has had it’s biggest impact on education. The community colleges (called junior colleges, or JCs, out here) have been especially hard hit. Reduced course offering and overcrowded classrooms are the norm.
If your daughter hopes to transfer to a 4 yr college (particularly a UC school), other JCs have better transfer rates, like Santa Monica and Pasadena.

Thanks, that’s great info. I know Santa Monica is one of the JCs she is considering, about 4 right now she’s narrowed down to, but still open. That’s good info to know. I think one in Glendale too and a 4th - in the OC, can’t remember the name. The transfer of credits is a big thing I told her to make sure we knew before she enrolled.

The problem is that tuition never covers the cost of running a college or university. If tuition rates were raised to actually cover the cost of running an institution of higher education than only the Slim’s, Buffet’s and Gate’s kids could afford to attend.
UC actually saved money by cutting its enrollment

Bingo. If it were that simple, then with more students the colleges could simply hire a few more part-time faculty and schedule more classes in the evenings or on weekends to accommodate the extra students. Unfortunately not the case.

And with returns on endowments down, and alumni feeling pinched, they can’t afford the financial aid they used to ... so the only students getting in are the ones who can afford it, and there are fewer of them because THEIR parents are hurting ...

The team held an optional skate on Monday. Chris Higgins was wearing a walking boot and went for brief skate this morning. There has been no official word, but he looks doubtful.
The only other players who skated were - Nigel Dawes (probably in for Higgins), Brian McGrattan, Mikael Backlund and Adam Pardy. Goaltending coach Jamie McLennan stepped between the pipes for the skate. - TSN
Projected Lines vs. Red Wings
Forwards:
Bourque - Stajan - Iginla
Higgins - Langkow - Kotalik
Hagman - Conroy - Moss
Glencross - Nystrom - Mayers

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Don’t worry, with a victory tonight you’re virtually certain of making the playoffs barring a complete meltdown. Even a win for Calgary wouldn’t cause unnecessary distress if I were a Red Wings fan. The chances of Detroit losing out to both Nashville and Calgary down the stretch looks rather remote given schedule, form, and a healthy Wings roster.
So don’t worry, be happy.
