GDT - Game #6 : Red Wings host Flames (7:30)

Detroit begin a four game home-stand, spread over 17 days, with a tilt tonight against the Flames; and play 10 of their next 13 at JLA. In their first five games, DET has managed to amass a respectable 7 of 10 points.  Most would agree that after looking swaggerish in their first two games (outscoring opponents 7-2), DET has looked rather pedestrian in their last three (being outscored 7-10).  Uncle Mike thinks his team has yet to “engage”, whatever the hell that means (more on that below).

I believed the hype that DET have 3 “talented” lines, and a relentless-grinding 4 line.  So with all that skill, isn’t their 2.8 goals/game (good for the league median) pretty absurd (last seasons edition managed 2.72)?  Shouldn’t DET be a helluva lot better than 16% on the PP (last yr 19.2%)?  Injuries, or something else?

There is some good news for the offensively challenged Red Wings.  After taking an elbow to the melon, and missing the better part of two games, Johan Franzen will return to the lineup. Maybe he will bring some scoring with him.  Lord knows DET could use some.  On the circus line, only Magically Delicious has found the net (3,1), Hank has 4 pts, but no goals (0,4), and Homer has nada; combined they are -1.  That is not a typo, -1; with the Selke owner and another “magnificent” two-way player on that line.

The Flame, even more offensively inept (29) than DET, are coming off a 1-0 OT win at Bubba’s place, and the Kipper stole that for them (34 sv).

Game On, Bitches(!)

Happy Birthday Rumbear.  A win for the birthday would be nice, scoring more than three goals would be even better.

Khan(!) has all the news from Wings practice Wednesday:

Babcock said he’ll stick with his regular power-play lines (Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom and Franzen-Hudler-Filppula/Bertuzzi) after switching Zetterberg and Franzen for half of Monday’s practice.

Here are the lines and defense pairings they practiced with:

Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom
Franzen-Filppula-Bertuzzi
Hudler-Modano-Cleary
Miller-Helm-Eaves (Abdelkader)

Lidstrom-Stuart
Kronwall-Janik
Kindl-Salei

Howard (starting)
Osgood

Abdelkader (ribs) said he hasn’t been told yet if he’s cleared to play. Defenseman Jonathan Ericsson (back) has not been on the ice in 12 days.

And the bad news, Nails is out 4-6 weeks due to sports hernia surgery.

———————————————————————————————————————————

Engage.  Engage my ass, pc bullshit for time to play like it freaking matters:

“I think our team has to engage,’’ Babcock said after Saturday’s 2-1 overtime win in Phoenix. “What I mean by that is the game’s a real simple game. You got to compete harder than the other team. If you do that, you can win.

“If you want to skill yourself around the rink you’re not going to win very many nights. On a consistent basis, (you need) wave after wave going after the other team, winning all the loose puck battles. Our power play will be better when that happens.’‘

The (F)Lames lines:

Who schedules this league, a chimpanzee with a dart board?

They tried to get him, but he was busy coming up with the EU’s plans for budget cuts, so they had to settle for Bettman.  But they DID get a hobo with a Sterno habit to provide some much-needed brains.

Kipper’s been in decline for years now (that’s what happens when you ride a goalie hard), but he still has the capacity to steal games, so let’s not play this one entirely in our own end and rely on Jimmah to stand on his head.  A lineup this talented shouldn’t have Whiskey Dick.

Speaking of which, no GDT cockblock here.  Nice work as always, Okie.

via Flames Insider,

Just in jest (we think), Olli Jokinen predicted a 5-1 victory tonight for the Calgary Flames over the Detroit Red Wings.

People on the outside may be down on his game, but Jokinen was in a fantastic mood as the Flames prepare to take on Todd Bertuzzi and the Wings tonight at Joe Louis Arena.
“You always get up for it when you’re playing Detroit,” Jokinen said. “They’ve been a top team for a reason for a long time. I don’t know how long. But as long as I’ve been in the league, they’ve been good.

“You always want to play well here. It’s not like you don’t want to play well every game, but somehow the team is usually really good here.”

Dart-throwing chimps, lewd animal acts and a sword-swallowing commish are precisely what make this league great.  Four games in thirty-nine nights?  No problem.  The game of hockey, as far as I can tell at least, is merely a minor sideshow spectacle in this here circus we call the NHL anyway.  “What do you call this act?” the man asked.  A smiling Bettman coyly replied, “we’re called the Aristocrats!”

Anyway, the buzz word for tonight’s game is apparently engage.  With that in mind I’m aboot to head out, get some grub and engage with some alcohol before game time.  Per RWBill’s recommendation, we’re gonna check out Detroit Beer Company before heading over to fhe Joe.

Yes that’s a serious commute!  DBC is only aboot a 5 minute or less walk from the Fox parking deck behind Hockeytown, and when you exit Beer Company on Broadway turn right one block gets you on the People Mover.  If you ask the ladies behind the bar they may give you a couple of tokens.  If you take the PM after the game get off at Grand Circus Park if you parked behind Hockeytown.

I got fooled into drinking their seasonal called “Black IPA”, which was pretty much a stout.  Nothing wrong with that it was just on the opposite end of the spectrum from what I was thinking of.  They had a seasonal Double IPA which wasn’t available, and from what I remember from H2H their regular IPA was not that remarkable, at least compared to one of tne San Diego style IPAs.  It’s all fun anyway so no matter.

When he played for Phx not too long ago I remember asking Phx fans, at the hockey game, if they’d allow him to watch their kids for them in the event they had tickets and Olli was a healthy scratch.

The answer was a unanimous:  “how good of seats are we talkin’ here?”

Just Curious. How does does daylight saving time actually save daylight? Whether your government tells you it’s 6 o’clock or 7 o’clock, physics and topograhy have already determined how much daylight you’ll have on a particular day in a particular place.

Dude, I have no answer to that… it’s darker when I wake up, it’s sunny until after 7pm… that’s it.

Don’t punch me.

I believe the hype that DET has 3 “talented” lines, and a relentless-grinding 4 line. Fixed. Thanks OKie. Bitches.

it’s based on sleep patterns.  by adjusting the time that shows on your clock in relation to dusk/dawn, you are changing when you wake in relation to dusk/dawn.  it’s about how many hours PEOPLE are up during light, and trying to save electricity…or something.

my favorite was when I heard some farmers complaining that it messes with their cows’ feeding times.  because, I guess, cows can read clocks.

Adding daylight to afternoons benefits retailing, sports, and other activities that exploit sunlight after working hours,[3] but causes problems for farming, evening entertainment and other occupations tied to the sun.[4][5] Traffic fatalities are reduced when there is extra afternoon daylight.[6] Its effect on health and crime is less clear. Although an early goal of DST was to reduce evening usage of incandescent lighting, formerly a primary use of electricity,[7] modern heating and cooling usage patterns differ greatly, and research about how DST currently affects energy use is limited or contradictory.[8]

Reminds of me of “Time Enough for Love” when Heinlein’s character, based on himself, is bitching about how cows need to be milked twice a day but as long as it’s twice a day they don’t care when.  So 6 AM and 6 PM is way too fuching early for him, so he switches it to 9 and 9.  Only to have the experienced farm hand he hires switch it back.  To which he’s like “Look, if you really wanna wake up ass early, be my guest, I was simply trying to keep one from having to wake up early.”  Common theme in that one, hating on waking up early.  I’m all for it.
