GDT - Game #71: Red Wings at Canucks (10:00)

Somewhat predictably, DET fell to EDM last night in OT.  Only a miraculous game tying goal by Rafalski with two-tenths of a second remaining in the tilt, allowed DET to escape with a point.  CGY beat SJS 4-3, last night.  As a result, DET and CGY are tied with 81 points each.  DET still lays claim to the 8th spot, as they have a game in hand on CGY.  That game in hand is tonight at VAN, and it will be no small task to claim points at GM Place; on back to back nights no less.

VAN are 7-2-1 since the Olympic break, including a 3-2 win over fellow division leader SJS Thursday night.  At GM Place, the ‘Nucks have a 26-8-1 record,  3rd best in the league. Henrik Sedin is a scoring monster, in 71 games he has 28 goals, 66 assists, and is +32 (#2 in points,  #1 in assists, #3 in +/-).

The Wings still control their own fate in the quest for 19 straight playoff appearances.  But, they are going to have to fight for their right to party this postseason, and 60 minutes a night would certainly help.

Khan(!) on last nights result:

Detroit forward Patrick Eaves left the game with a head injury after taking a hit with about 13:30 to play in the second period. He said he isn’t sure if he’ll be able to play Saturday night in Vancouver.. . .

The Oilers jumped all over the Red Wings from the opening faceoff, scoring twice in the first 5 minutes. Edmonton held a 13-2 edge in shots at the midway mark and might have blown it open if not for Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard, who made several key stops. . .

Ryan Whitney scored at 4:58 after a pass by Cogliano sailed right past the blade of Zetterberg’s stick.

Babcock called timeout at that point to settle his team, which was being outshot 9-1. Detroit finished with a 33-24 edge, including a 17-3 advantage in the third period.

“We took that timeout, and once we settled down, we started to play a lot better,’’ said Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom, who played his 1,400th game. “In the second and third, we took the game over but their goalie played well.’‘

Said Babcock: “They were better than us at the start, and we cost ourselves a point at the start of the game for sure. We didn’t play hard enough at the start. They were quick, we were slow, they were better.’‘

I hope Jim’s in tonight. We need the point(s).

And of course, set fire to Ericsson.

(and any other news on Eaes? Or will we have to endure Bertuzzi and Meech on the offense?)

Red Wings’ Patrick Eaves (head) taken out as a precaution, not sure of his status for Saturday
By Ansar Khan
March 20, 2010, 1:07AM
EDMONTON, Alberta—Post-game update on Detroit Red Wings forward Patrick Eaves:

He basically said he had his bell rung and they decided to play it safe by pulling him from the game after the second period. He said it’s too early to tell if he’ll be available for Saturday’s game in Vancouver.

“I didn’t see who hit me (it was defenseman Aaron Johnson) Collision at the blue line,’’ Eaves said. “I talked it over with Piet (trainer Van Zant). I was a little bit off there. We thought it was necessary to play it safe.’’

Asked if he has a concussion, he said, “I think it’s just precautionary.’’

If Eaves is unable to play, the Red Wings can insert defenseman Derek Meech into the lineup as a forward Due to salary-cap constraints, they have no spare forwards and cannot recall a forward from Grand Rapids (AHL) until the start of the playoffs.

Kool-aid talking:

All things considered, Bert looked pretty dangerous last night.  It looks like he’s starting to come out of his slump and is only barely missing doing the right thing now instead of doing the exact opposite of that.  He showed that “starting to heat up” jump right before he caught fire the first time this season.  Having him on another 8-game tear would sure as shit be nice.

Of course, if he’s only good for one more 8-game tear this season, I’d prefer that it wait until June.

My current opinion of Bert looking good has to do with the quality of the competition.

Thanks, Jeff.

Well, I’m hoping for a Vancouver win. Just to keep the playoff race tight, and the A2Y interesting to read.

A game winner from Hansen would be ideal.

The Canucks are playing as good as anyone in the NHL right now, they are a joy to watch. Confident and disciplined, with a balanced scoring attack. I just hope they can maintain their form into the playoffs.

In spite of this being Babs first return to his Gold Medal home, I hope their are no ceremonies for the Detroit Olympians, just seems like we need to put that behind us now. However, seeing as this is a HNIC game, I suspect there will be some recognition.

Bertuzzi is such an under-achiever, so frustrating to watch him aimlessly skating around. He deserves to be playing in Atlanta or something.

Personally, I’m cheering for the Flames to grab the 8th spot but I have a ton of respect for the Wings. They definitely deserve to be in the playoffs. Can either/both of them chase down the Preds?

Gonna be a good one boys, go ‘Nucks!

I don’t know what to say about Bertuzzi.  Never has there been someone with so much potential, do so little.  Not in a Red Wings jersey anyway.  I know there is a ton of things to consider regarding Bert, but still I can’t think of any situation in which I wouldn’t rather have Abdelkader out there.  But I’m not a GM or coach and probably don’t know shit.

As always, well done Okie.
No batting practice this morning but we had our first weekend baseball practice of the year, so I’m hoping the good juju from last year carries over.
I’m not sure which team will play tonight, hopefully it’s the one that played in the 3rd last night and not the first period.

No Eaves tonight.. sigh..

Red Wings won’t have Patrick Eaves’ services vs. Vancouver
By George Malik
March 20, 2010, 2:11PM

According to the Detroit Free Press’s Helene St. James, Red Wings forward Patrick Eaves won’t take part in tonight’s tilt against the Vancouver Canucks (10 PM, FSD/CBC/WXYT):

March 20, Detroit Free Press: Eaves collided with Oilers defenseman Aaron Johnson during Friday’s 3-2 shootout loss at Edmonton. Eaves played through the second period – even scoring a goal – but didn’t return for the third period, saying afterwards he was pulled for precautionary reasons.
General manager Ken Holland said Eaves is “day to day” and hope is he’ll be ready to play Monday when the Wings host the defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins.
The Wings didn’t hold a morning skate today, but in the past they’ve used defenseman Derek Meech up front when needed.

Great info as usual JeffOK.

Tall order at VAN tonight agaynst a streaking team and talented offense who are tough at home.  If you want the Wings version of Jordan Tootoo, then you’d put Abdelkader out there.  50 games, 6 points, -11.  No thank you.  But I understand cap issues prevent any personnel movement at this point anyhoo.

The top 2 teams have hit a wall, even if temporary, but can certainly snap out of it.  The Peloton of Suck still exists but stays mired well below DET and CGY, for now.  The top 9 are spread down pretty evenly.

This shows teams 1-13, last 10 games only.

I made a bet with the boys at practice in a timed sprint drill kinda drill, for each second they beat their previous individual time, I’d do 10 push-ups per second to the good, they’d do 10 push ups per second to the bad against the stop watch.
I did 120 push ups in about 8 minutes.  big surprise
2 of the boys had to do a 10 push ups each.
D’oh.

This will be the fourth time he has started both games when the team has played on consecutive days. In the second game of the previous three occasions, he defeated Vancouver 3-1 on Nov. 12, when Chris Osgood had the flu, lost to Chicago 4-3 in a shootout on Jan. 17 and lost at Anaheim 3-1 on Feb. 3.
