GDT - Game #72: Red Wings host Penguins (7:00)

The Wings are back at the Joe tonight after a stunningly successful three game Western Canada swing. The heart pounding Wings are apparently determined to give their fans their moneys worth. A must win in Calgary last Monday was accomplished by a Mule to Homer game-winning tip-in with 1:19 left in the 3rd. After the Wings took a 3 day holiday, they predictably failed to show up in EDM on time, spotting the Oil a 2 goal lead. Brain Rafalski maintained his excellent play from the Olympics, and with the extra skater on, potted the game-tying goal with tenths of a second remaining. Alas the Wings failed (again) at the shootout point. Sat at VAN. Zetterberg potted the winner with tenths of a second remaining in the OT frame. 5 of 6 points, wins against CGY and VAN no less. Those were clutch points, and the Wings have been clutch lately.
MIN won, in regulation against CGY Sunday afternoon. The Wings are two points up with a game in hand. The Wings are masters of their own fate. If they can keep up their gritty/intense play, they will be a force to be reckoned with. Skate to throat never seemed more appropriate.

Khan(!):
The Red Wings often are tired and sluggish in their first game after a trip to the West Coast. They lost 6-0 at the New York Islanders on Jan. 12 and dropped a 4-3 shootout decision in St. Louis on Feb. 9.
They hope staying overnight in Vancouver rather than flying home after the game will make a difference.
“Usually when we (fly after the game), we get home around 7:30 in the morning,’’ captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. “It’s hard to sleep on that flight, and all the sudden you feel like you have to sleep all day to catch up. I think it’s easier to spend the night and then have a travel day.’‘
Red Wings coach Mike Babcock added: “It’s a long travel day. Time changes are tough. It’s going to be a hard game, but we have to be mentally prepared.’’ . . .
They dealt well with their depleted depth at forward, missing Patrick Eaves (head injury) and Dan Cleary (groin injury), who are listed as day-to-day. It helped that Zetterberg turned in one of his best games of the season, registering nine shots on goal and a plus-3 rating to go along with a goal and an assist. He had good chemistry with Valtteri Filppula (goal, two assists), his linemate for the past five games.
“(Zetterberg) has been a lot better since he started playing with Fil,’’ Babcock said. “He seems to have turned the corner. He’s feeling better about his game. All athletes, I don’t care how good you are, confidence is fleeting. It’s great to have it back.’’ . . .
Todd Bertuzzi replaced Cleary on Zetterberg’s line and played his best game in several weeks. He had five shots on goal, crashed the net and was engaged physically. He ended his 19-game goal-scoring drought with his first goal since Jan. 23.
————————————————————————————————————————
McCosky, Detroit News:
The Wings’ penalty-kill unit hasn’t allowed a goal in eight straight games, killing off 24 straight. They have killed 52 of the last 55 opponents’ power-play chances.
... Danny Cleary (groin) and Patrick Eaves (head) will be evaluated this morning, though the Wings expect both will play tonight.
———————————————————————————————————————
From the Pittsburgh Post Gazette:
Probable goaltenders: Marc-Andre Fleury for Penguins. Jimmy Howard for Red Wings.
Penguins: Have three regulation losses in past 17 games. ... Have scored more than three goals twice in past 13 games. ... Four of past five games decided in OT have been losses.
Red Wings: Are 6-1-1 in past eight games. ... Are 8-5-3 vs. Eastern Conference. ... Todd Bertuzzi has one goal in past 20 games.
Hidden stat: Red Wings are among the leaders at home in power play (21.5 percent) and penalty killing (86.2 percent).

Just like the eigth spot in the West there’s been a curious reluctance to gain a decisive edge in the Division race between New Jersey and Pittsburgh. New Jersey wins the last game and sweeps the series before giving back the two points with substandard performances against Toronto and St. Louis. Pittsburgh, not willing to seem greedy, lose a largely uninspired game against Carolina.
What I’m trying to say is that there’s not a lot of predictability going around. Looking at Detroit and Pittsburgh, I think the teams are pretty evenly matched on paper with slightly different strength and weaknesses. But neither team have suffered from consistency. Right now Detroit has a motivational edge and better form, whereas Pittsburgh seem undecided as to either going strong for the division title or just coast lazily into the playoffs.
Therefore I don’t expect anything from the Penguins tonight. Lately, everything has revolved around Crosby’s effort due to lack of consistant secondary threats, and his efforts has varied quite abit post-Olympics, but I’m hoping that Malkin has refound some energy. Perhaps facing Detroit will activate some desire to win, or at least not get embarrassed. One can only hope.

Eric Duhatschek, Globe and Mail, thinks 96 is the magic number for the W.C. playoffs, and offers an interesting suggestion:
Comparing NHL regular-season point totals, pre- and post-lockout, is something of a fool’s game, given how the numbers are skewed by so many bonus points awarded for overtime and shootout losses.
Still, no team in NHL history has ever missed the playoffs after recording 96 points, which is what it may take to qualify for postseason play in the Western Conference, where the two teams that the Calgary Flames are chasing, the Nashville Predators and the Detroit Red Wings, refuse to lose.
Chasing the Red Wings, especially, poses a thankless challenge given how last year’s Stanley Cup finalists secured five of six points on their swing through Western Canada in the most unlikely way. Detroit defeated Calgary in regulation Monday by scoring with 1 minute 19 seconds to go, and then proceeded to win its next two – Thursday in Edmonton and Saturday in Vancouver in the final seconds of play. With 11 games remaining, a comparatively weak schedule and two dates left with the Predators, the Red Wings – currently at 83 points – could conceivably get to the century mark for the 10th consecutive season (and face an interesting test tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins, a rematch of the past two finals. Anybody else think they’re capable of doing it again to play the rubber match?) The Flames, meanwhile, cannot afford another stumble. After yesterday’s heartbreaking 4-3 loss to the Minnesota Wild, they play Anaheim at home and then depart for a three-game, make-it-or-break-it road swing that begins Thursday against the New York Islanders.
Up until now, the 2007 Colorado Avalanche are the team with the highest point total (95) that failed to qualify for the playoffs.
96 points?
DET are 71 GP, 35-23-13, 83 pts
13 points in 11 games seems extremely doable (6-5-1). 13/22 = .590 pt %. Right now, through 71 games, DET point % is .585.
Since the Mule’s return, DET are 8-2-3 = 19/26 = .731 pt %

Ahh, good to see The Instigator continue his stellar defensive play. Seriously…this may be deja vu all over again, but HOW does a player have that many points and still be a MINUS SEVEN?
But neither team have suffered from consistency.
Don’t know about yinz Pens fans, Moq, but I enjoy every minute of consistency. Unfortunately, it seems for the Wings we’ve had literally minutes of consistency this season, with hours if inconsistency. Sounds like the same thing in your camp.

Minus six, even. Not that that’s all that much better.
Great work as always, Okie. With great examples of your handiwork such as this, it’s only a matter of time before you bid adieu to the dust bowl. Like three days, for instance.

That’s what I tried to write. Unfortunately, I tried to be too clever and chose an awkward phrase.
Seriously…this may be deja vu all over again, but HOW does a player have that many points and still be a MINUS SEVEN?
There have been a few attempts at explanation. My personal opinion is that he chases the puck too much in the offensive, and the defensive zone, constantly ending out of position. Tries to do too much is the positive spin on that. The short story is that he still has a lot to learn defensively.
Posted by Moq from Denmark on 03/22/10 at 10:02 AM ET
It puzzled me too Paul, especially since Duhatschek plainly noted that DET had taken 5 of 6 points on the road trip.
This is the sentence from the article that grabbed my attention the most: Anybody else think they’re capable of doing it again to play the rubber match?
Despite his omission, Duhatschek is, in my opinion, far and away, one of the better hockey writers. He obviously thinks the Wings are poised for a run.

Fun with numbers from the CBC:
Pittsburgh dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the Hurricanes on Saturday and has now lost four of its last six games overall (2-2-2 record). The Pens have lost five of their last six OT/shootout contests since winning 10 of their first 11 of the season.
The Red Wings beat the Canucks, 4-3, in overtime on Saturday and are now 4-0-1 in their last five games overall. Detroit is 7-2-1 since the Olympic break.
The Wings have allowed just three power-play goals in their last 18 skates and their penalty-kill percentage is now 94.2 since games of January 29—best in the NHL.
Is Cobo Joes minor friendly? I’ll be traveling with my 17 y/o boy (Rambo a/k/a Christian) - who I promised I’d take to the JLA before he finished High School.

Jimmah is in net tonight - - good.
Eaves/Cleary not playing - bad.
Stuie questionable - UGLY.
Stuart did not skate this morning. Coach Mike Babcock said he was hurt in Saturday’s game in Vancouver but the club did not find out about the injury until today. Babcock would not reveal the injury, saying “he’s getting checked out right now.’‘
Forwards Patrick Eaves (sore back, neck) and Dan Cleary (sore groin) will not play tonight. Eaves said he doesn’t have a concussion and isn’t experiencing headaches, that the pain is more in his back and his neck. Cleary said he feels better today. Both said they hope to play Wednesday against St. Louis.
Derek Meech and Brett Lebda will dress again. Meech likely will take some shifts at forward. Lebda, who dressed but didn’t play Saturday, will play if Stuart can’t go.
Jimmy Howard will make his 19th consecutive start in goal.

Freaking car dealers…. I am buying a truck & the dealer is literally NEXT DOOR (50 feet away) to my day job. I started the process Friday & am picking it up today. I call and talk to the sales twit.. “get the bundle of papers ready and I’ll come over sign & drive off”.
An hour later, I head over… the sales twit “I’ll go find that paperwork.. wont be long’.
So he finds it 30 minutes later (on his desk where he left it Friday night). So he then says “hang out for a few & we’ll sign this stuff”. Blah blah blah… “Dude, I work next door & can go back to work and you call me when you’re ready for me”. Dumb dumb again “just hang on, it won’t take long”.... that was an hour ago. Still no call…. I hate playing this freaking game. I just want the payment book & my keys ferchristsakes. I don’t need to wait on you, your manager, your finance guy & no I don’t need anything else. Simple request, no? No wonder I hate buying stuff from “sales people”. GRRRRRR.
Hope all my fristration is directed at car dealers today & not a hockey team later tonight.

“Dude, I work next door & can go back to work and you call me when you’re ready for me”.

You still have to avoid the appearance protection package and extended warranty gauntlet.
God created car dealers so that lawyers would have someone to look down on.

You add faster than I do, and I started 30 minutes ago.

well it’s not like Stuart was there at game 7,heh,just ask Talbot.
needed to get that out,but really its a shame,he was starting to look semi decent with Kronwall last couple of games
did anyone notice Mule covering the blue line last game, always when Error and Kronner went to play forward, happened many times and he looked really good, better than those two at forward,so no worries

based on the 13 games the Wings have played with Franzen back, and a record of 8-2-3, extrapolated to 82 games that’s 50-13-19 for 119 points.
jus’ sayin’
btw, that would put them in first overall, 13 points ahead of Washington.

forgot to add: just triple shift Mule
and,I hope we dont get Phoenix in the first round,Gary.Ass owns them, their style of playing only carrer 2nd and 3rd liners is really effective also, constant pressure

Aw Crap, Eaves and Cleary AND maybe Stooie all out?
RSV.
Don’t know how many games we can pull off with 10 forwards. Does Meech see some forward time tonight then, with Big E and Lebda on Defense?
Good blogging Jeff from other sources.

Car dealers. F them. This is why I liked Saturn, and also buying thru my military bank USAA who prearranges pricing with selected dealers.
To quote Ted Stryker, “What a Pisser.”

With Leech and Mebda both playing, I wish I would have extended my anniversary weekend (no hockey or fake friends) another day.

Well, no Malkin tonight will at least somewhat offset the loss of Eaves and Cleary. Man I hope Stuart plays. I’m still deciding on whether or not to be here for the LB as I can’t stomach the trolls.

Get lots of shots on Fluery. Scuttlebutt around the ‘tubes is that he’s been letting in softies a bit too often for the fans’ tastes.
Of course, this is a big, playoff-like game, so we’ll see which Fluery shows up.
I’m looking forward to see which reffing standard they’ll be using. I’m guessing it will still be the playoff reffing standard that we’ve seen for the last five or six weeks. The reintroduction of interference has not particularly been fun to watch.
Great job, as always, Okie.
