GDT - Game #77: Red Wings host Blues (7:30)

It would be fair to say that DET face the proverbial “Gordian Knot” tonight when they host the Blues.  A quick check of the W.C. standings make the dilemna readily apparent.  DET will, in all likelihood, finish 2nd in Conference. ANA currently sit 7th in Conference with 84 pts. NSH is 8th with 84 pts, but one fewer win.  STL are 9th with 83 pts.  Wings fan have been praying for months that the team develop the intensity of play they displayed during last years run to the Cup.  Wings fan, as well as Coach Babcock, also realize the less travel the team has to endure during the playoffs, the better the chances for success.

Also noteworthy is DET’s success against the Blues this year, and Mason in particular (i.e. perhaps STL are a more “desirable” 1st round matchup).  STL are looking for their first win in six meetings this season against DET.  Mason is 0-3-2 with a 3.31 GAA in seven career appearances at the JLA, and has lost five straight to Detroit with a 4.21 GAA in that time.

STL are coming off a 3-1 loss in CHI last night, in which they managed just 7 SOG in the first 40 mins.  DET are looking to avoid their longest home losing streak of the season and seeking their first season sweep of STL since 2002-03; or are they?

DET:  76 g/p 49 18 9 107 pts (2 in Conf., 1 in Central), 279 gf, 225 ga, Last 10 6-3-1, Streak Lost 2

Jeff Sagarin NHL Ratings, from USAToday.com:

To make predictions for upcoming games, simply compare the RATINGS of
the teams in question and allow an ADDITIONAL .25 goals for the home
team.  Thus, for example, a HOME team with a rating of 4.43 would be
favored by .57 goals over a VISITING team having a rating of 4.11.
Or a VISITING team with a rating of 4.56 would be favored by .42 goals
over a HOME team having a rating of 3.89

NOTE: Use whatever home advantage is listed in the output below.
In the example just above, a home edge of .25 was shown for
illustrative purposes. The home edge will vary during the season.

Rutherford also penned a writeup following the STL implosion in CHI last night, St. Louis Post Dispatch:

After registering just three shots on goal in the first period Wednesday night against Chicago, the Blues certainly could do better in the second period.

And they did, posting four.

With the Blues’ playoff hopes down to the final six regular-season games, the offense flat-lined in a 3-1 loss to Chicago, mustering only 17 shots on goal, two more than the team’s season low.

Jeff Woywitka’s third goal of the season for the Blues, a power-play goal with 1.5 seconds left in the game, kept the club from its seventh shutout of the season, but that’s all it did.

“We got outplayed tonight,” Blues forward Keith Tkachuk said. “Right from the start of the game, they outworked us and competed better than us. That just can’t happen at this time of the year ... it can’t.”

“No reasons” for the lack of hard work Wednesday, Blues coach Andy Murray said. “It needs to be different. It has been different, but we were not ourselves tonight, and we need to get it back quickly.”
