GDT - S.C. Finals, Game 4: Red Wings (2-1) at Penguins (1-2) (8:00)

Do the Wings take a strangle-hold on the series tonight, and have an opportunity to hoist Lord Stanley at the JLA on Saturday?  Or will they be facing their first real adversity in this SCF?  We know that Kris Draper, the 2003 Selke winner (and Det’s leading faceoff player) is in tonight.  I would imagine that many of the “19” have made engaged in numerous pagan rituals to assuage the hockey gods into allowing the 2008 Selke winner (2009 Selke and Hart finalist) to take the ice tonight. According to “The Highlander” he practiced “hard”, and was centering Fil and Hoss on the 1A line.

Malkin is a Red Wing Killer, and is pretty much, single handedly, carrying the Pens (assist on PIT lone goal in Game 1, scored PIT lone goal in 2, and 3 assists in game 3).  Adding Datsyuk into the line-up gives Uncle Mike greater flexibility in trying to defend Malkin.  It also should give the Wings more time with the damn puck, Datsyuk plays with it like it is his personal yo-yo.  Datsyuk should also create some matchup issues for Bylsma.  Maybe, just maybe, he and Draper will help DET’s ridiculously inept PK, it has to doesn’t it?  Thankfully DET still owns 5-5 play.  As an aside, can you imagine where the PENs would be without their Hart finalist?

It is game 4 tonight, time to unleash the Hoss!  I’ll be seeing you on the Hasek.

Jeff Sagarin NHL Ratings, from USAToday.com:

To make predictions for upcoming games, simply compare the RATINGS of
the teams in question and allow an ADDITIONAL .25 goals for the home
team.  Thus, for example, a HOME team with a rating of 4.43 would be
favored by .57 goals over a VISITING team having a rating of 4.11.
Or a VISITING team with a rating of 4.56 would be favored by .42 goals
over a HOME team having a rating of 3.89

NOTE: Use whatever home advantage is listed in the output below.
In the example just above, a home edge of .25 was shown for
illustrative purposes. The home edge will vary during the season.

Wednesday Wings practice, from “The Highlander”:

Babcock just said that Datsyuk is a game-time decision. “We have an optional skate tomorrow morning and we’ll see how he responds after that and after today. I have to talk to (trainer) Piet (Van Zant) and see how (Datsyuk) looks.” Datsyuk also said that he would be a game-time decision tomorrow.

That said, Datsyuk was practicing hard today, doing drills for the first time in a long time. The practice lines were shuffled as though they were preparing for Pavel being back. It sure looks like Datsyuk will be back unless his body takes a step backwards after today’s workout.

Also, Babcock just confirmed that Draper is back in the lineup, but said that he doesn’t know who’s out. Well, it sure looks like Abdelkader is out. Leino and Maltby were Draper’s wings in practice. Draper, Maltby and Leino were off the ice for a half-hour while Abdelkader worked out.

----

Pavel Datsyuk is practicing right now as though he’s going to play in tomorrow’s Game 4. First, he’s working through all the drills and looking good. Until this point, Datsyuk (foot) was just skating on his own, not doing drills.

Also, Datsyuk is centering a line at practice with Valtteri Filppula on one wing and Marian Hossa on the other. There is no reason to shuffle the lines like that unless the Wings believe that Datsyuk will likely be available.

So that said, here were the practice lines ...

Franzen-Zetterberg-Cleary
Filppula-Datsyuk-Hossa
Hudler-Helm-Samuelsson
Leino-Draper-Maltby

Lidstrom-Chelios
Kronwall-Stuart
Ericsson-Lebda

This series isn’t making me hate the Penguins.  Far from it.  I turned the corner on Crosby earlier this year.  I don’t see him crying to the refs, I see him talking to them like any captain would.  The foot slash on Maltby?  Big deal.  I think it’s great to see Malts finally got under somebody’s skin again.  I don’t see him taking dives out there.  He’s working very hard and getting shut down by two players that should be shutting him down.

Malkin’s not a fighter and I can give him the benefit of the doubt on simply forgetting that his stick was in his hand when he started cheap-shotting Zetterberg.  I don’t like the fact that he did it, but if I’ve forgiven Samuelsson for his edge at times, I can forgive Malkin for that.

Kunitz is still a Duck. F*ck him.

Brooks Orpik is playing hard and has caught some players coasting or with their heads down.  That’s hard, clean hockey and I can appreciate it.

Matt Cooke sucks.  If you did a full body scan on him, I’m sure you’d find that his rectum actually terminates right at the top of the spine, explaining why he has shit for brains.

Jordan Staal and Ruslan Fedotenko each seem to have a lot in common with their numerical counterparts on the Red Wings (11 and 26).  Tyler Kennedy has shown nothing but dogged determination so far.

To top it off, they have a guy like Dan Bylsma running the club.  Any surprise that the one coach we’ve faced in this offseason that hasn’t whined has also been the best coach we’ve faced?  Too bad that he’ll probably never get the chance to be a Jack Adams finalist after being handed a well-stocked team.  We all know what it’s like to watch that happen though.

The Penguins are a great organization and a team I can respect.  Too bad that 95% of their fans are f*cking crybaby moron hypocrites.

From the CBC.ca:

As much as the Penguins are motivated by their Game 3 win, there’s one other battle that must start going their way for them to have any chance of taking the series.

For the second straight Cup final, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has been systematically eliminated from the series by the smothering checking of Zetterberg.

Through three games, Crosby has one assist, that coming on a Pittsburgh power play Tuesday night.

Break down this head-to-head showdown and the man they call Z scores all A’s. While Crosby puts a minus-two rating next to his lonely assist, Zetterberg is plus-three, with a goal and two helpers.

Teammates aren’t surprised to see Zetterberg dominating this duel once again.

“He’s been big, battling hard,” Detroit defenceman Brad Stuart said of Zetterberg. “He’s a leader for us, all year long. He’s really stepped up and taken it to another level.”

Babcock sees a different Zetterberg in the playoffs than he saw during the regular season. “Z didn’t have a big year for us during the regular season by any means for his standard,” Babcock said. “I mean he was a great player, don’t get me wrong, but not for his standard.”

It’s challenges like this that fire up the soft-spoken Swede, and once again, he’s rising to the occasion.

“I believe he has a will tank deeper than anybody I’ve ever been associated with,” Babcock said. “His drive train is fantastic.”

-From a Penguins fan,

I’m excited to see Datysuk back in Detroits lineup for the simple reason that the Stanley Cup should be won with no exceptions or asterisks.  If the Penguins are to win the cup this year, I want to see them dethrone the Red Wings at the top of their dynasty.  Should be a great game tonight as well as the turning point in the series.

haha I’m glad you’re confident in the Wings as you should be.  They are a deep, talented, and experienced team.

I wouldn’t be so quick to call this series in 5 games though.  With all three games being decided by the bounce of a puck here and a powerplay there, the rational thought process would be to assume nothing less than 7 games.  7 games means that the fans got a special treat.  7 games is what it will take to crown a champion.

7 games is also what the league wants.  and what the league wants, they hint to the refs to provide.

just watch.  whichever team is down at the halfway mark of the third period will miraculously get a gift of a power play.

Great work, Jeff.  I’m still on the premise we’ll for sure at the warmups if Datsyuk will be in.  At this point, I’m still hesitant he will be in for tonight’s match.

Great to see Draper pencilled in.  We know of his great ability to win the important faceoffs but watch it.  The refs will try to minimize that advantage for the Wings by chasing him out of the faceoffs.

MATTHEW BARNABY: I’m going after it every single chance I get, and I’m sure Pittsburgh will too.

Here’s a thought, Steve and Matt: maybe that’s not the best message to be sending to our young people? Isn’t there enough evidence of the decline of sportsmanship in our society without you guys adding your own greasy thoughts to the mix? Not everyone is watching the game while waiting for ultimate fighting to come on. Out of all the possible compelling points of discussion, maybe you guys just don’t have anything intelligent for your viewers?

Nah, just Kunitz (who can’t get the Duck stink off himself) and Talbot (who had his career night on Tuesday and won’t be heard from again). As far as the fans, Pittsburgh is a football town. They have their Super Bowl championship, so they’re happy. They will be quite content with losing the Cup again to the superior franchise.

I’ve read the last few posts and comment sections and decided to reply...I think it is unfair to label all Pens fans as incompetent, etc, etc. about hockey.

Yes, Pittsburgh is a football town, for sure, but just because a few fans post comments here and they may or may not agree with your opinion doesn’t mean the rest of the town is the same way.

Every team has their own bunch of homers, yes, even Detroit.

With that being said, the refs blow on both sides and everyone has to agree with that.  We can sit hear all day and argue that one side got more bad calls than the other and no one would be right.  The wings do interfere during the entire game and they make it look flawless (legal).  The pens getting the non call on the too many men.  Hossa hook/slash on Dupuis (i think game 2) that lead to a goal.  Gill holding up attackers.  Interference on Malkin off the draw which leads to the slap shot goal.  Blah blah blah.  I just wish the refs would either call everything or nothing at all.

The conspiracy thing is unreal, anyone who believes that probably believes we didn’t go to the moon.  Bettman doesn’t have the sack to try and pull something like that off.  The sh*tstorm would be indescribable throughout sports.

Pens fans, quit b*tching...Wings fans, do the same.  “Its a hockey night in Pittsburgh!”

No other fanbase wished for anyone’s mom to have had an abortion.  Not even Anaheim.

No other fanbase had an impossible time understanding that what they called a penalty wasn’t a penalty, but what is called “defense,” a concept that may be unfamiliar to them - but is an essential part of hockey.  Even when it was an ILLUSTRATED EXPLANATION.  LIKE WITH PICTURES.  SO EVEN THE ILLITERATES COULD FIGURE IT OUT.

Of course all Pittsburgh fans aren’t like that - but no one else but Pittsburgh fans have shown up with that level of ignorance, stupidity, and venom in this entire playoffs.  No one.
