SCF Game 6, and the Wings have an opportunity to hoist Lord Stanley at Mellon Arena, for the second consecutive year. No need for storylines, numbers, quotes, or anything else, the Holy Grail will be in Pittsburgh and only for the Wings. The only question is whether Detroit will be flying high again.
I’ll see you Bitches on the Hasek, and in the true faith of Kate: Let’s Go Red Wings!!!!!

Jeff Sagarin NHL Ratings, from USAToday.com:
To make predictions for upcoming games, simply compare the RATINGS of
the teams in question and allow an ADDITIONAL .25 goals for the home
team. Thus, for example, a HOME team with a rating of 4.43 would be
favored by .57 goals over a VISITING team having a rating of 4.11.
Or a VISITING team with a rating of 4.56 would be favored by .42 goals
over a HOME team having a rating of 3.89NOTE: Use whatever home advantage is listed in the output below.
In the example just above, a home edge of .25 was shown for
illustrative purposes. The home edge will vary during the season.NHL 2008-2009 through 2009 June 6, Saturday - finals

Wings report from Monday, post-practice, via The Highlander:
Coach Mike Babcock just said that Dan Cleary will definitely play in Game 6. He also said that Pavel Datsyuk will start the game on Henrik Zetterberg’s wing. So, it looks like the same lineup as in Game 5. . .
Although he left practice early today, Kris Draper just said that he’s perfectly fine for Tuesday’s Game 6. . .
No Dan Cleary on the ice as the Red Wings just started their drills. They’re working, however, as though Cleary will play in Game 6, using Ville Leino as a placeholder. Cleary missed practice time leading into Game 5, including the morning skate, but played in the game. All the other lines are the same with Pavel Datsyuk on Henrik Zetterberg’s wing.

Ken Holland beleives it is Henrik Zetterberg’s talent and will that is the difference in shutting down Crosby, from Mike G. Morreale, NHL.com:
Detroit Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland pondered and then smiled when asked about the star-powered matchup between Henrik Zetterberg and Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby in the Stanley Cup Final. It’s been a classic confrontation and, as it stands right now, Holland’s guy is winning the battle.
Zetterberg, deemed worn down by some Pens players just two days ago, has not only posted two goals and six points in five games against Pittsburgh, but has played a huge part in limiting Crosby to a mere mortal-like goal and two assists. Crosby entered this best-of-7 Stanley Cup Final series with 14 goals in 17 games.
“Sid is going to get his points, but it’s just a matter of limiting the damage and Henrik has done just that,” Holland said. “The thing I love about Henrik is that he not only has talent but incredible will.” . . .
You can have skill, but if you don’t have will and determination it’s pretty tough to advance,” Holland said. “At the end of the day, it was will that got us through the Anaheim series with the amount of injuries we had and knowing how mentally tough they were. We found a way to get through that series and I think our will allowed us to get through the Chicago series.”

Don’t think we can expect another 5 alphabetically scored RW goals tonite, but 5 or 6 would be fine with me as long as the waterfowl pot 4 or less [in regulation please!].

Very excellent write up, Jeff. Hope it’s the last one. Thanks for your GDTs all year long. They’re worth it.
Amen. Oh, and thanks for Keeley Hazell. Nice work you did there.

Ack, I’m still looking at a minimum of nine hours to game time for me. Sigh. It is going to kill me sitting in those meetings and not knowing. I know I could have my friends text me and stuff but I want to watch the whole thing and watch it unfold, however it will.

It just occurred to me that tonight is going to be the last game ever played in the Igloo.
Mars Hossa nets 2 goals tonight, and then gets an honorary swing at the wrecking ball.
Four more effing hours…

I hope buckets finds the back of the flightless bird’s net first(again)...just to get flower freaked out and thinking...here we go again! That should help hoss find his scoring touch on his way to his hat trick and cup skate. Priceless! I wonder if that’ll be an NHL commercial next season? Penguin 18 turns 81 and skates cup! Wait...that’s not a pen(i)s jersey! Prolly won’t happen...little gary. Ass.
Posted by T1m0neX on 06/09/09 at 04:03 PM ET
i thought the igloo is still going to be used next year...don’t they move into Consol for the start of the 2010-11 season
Posted by Itrusteddrrahmani from Ann Arbor on 06/09/09 at 04:17 PM ET
Maybe after watching the Wings win back-to-back Cups in the Igloo, the Pens & their fans won’t be able to set foot in Mellon again. They’ll take ‘09-10 off to recover from the depression & anguish, and start back up in the new arena in ‘10-11.

Penguin 18 turns 81 and skates cup! Wait...that’s not a pen(i)s jersey!
That gives me an awesome mental image. Hossa stands there doing a promo with Crosby and then all of a sudden hits him with a chair mid-interview. All while JR screams ”OH MY GAWD! What is this? What is Hossa DOING? Someone put a STOP to this! What’s going ON?!”
Next time the Wings hit the ice you get ”Wa-- Wait a minute, that—that’s Hossa’s music!!!” and he skates out in Red and White to join them as he goes on to win the Belt™.
Wow, I’ve spent way too much of my life watching wrestling…

@ Mandingo and RedWinger: your commentary was friggin hilarious. too funny.
Saw this from Mark Spector, Sportsnet.ca, and because his “insight” coincides with mine, thought I’d share it:
5. Fleury of Saves
No cheapies in Game 6, Marc-Andre. Goals like the one Dan Cleary opened Game 5 with simply can not go in. The Penguins might be getting an inkling that Detroit, once again, is the better team in the Stanley Cup final. If they see that they are about to get out-goaltended again, those seeds will germinate quickly.
Wings must score first tonight, well maybe not, but it’d be a lot better for my sanity.

Whatever you do.....don’t give Cleary (or any Wing) credit.
WTF Spector, you campaigning to be the DC’s sidekick..?

Ah, you guys are right, the Igloo is open for one more season. With all that hoopla about “the new arena across the street”, I assumed this year was it.
But still, it can get demolished tonight…

Here are some interesting tidbits, from CBC.ca:
Another game, another move up the Stanley Cup record ladder for Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom.
When he takes the ice for Game 6, Lidstrom will be playing his 234th career Stanley Cup game, tying him with Claude Lemieux for fourth on the all-time list. . .
A Wings Cup win will make minor-league history as well.
Detroit’s Justin Abdelkader, Jonathan Ericsson, Darren Helm and Ville Leino are attempting to become the first quartet of rookies in NHL history to play at least half of the regular season in the AHL before playing in the Stanley Cup final and having their names engraved on the Cup.
A handful of Stanley Cup champs have had as many as three rookies who fit all three criteria, most recently the 2007 Anaheim Ducks in 2007 and 2000 New Jersey Devils. . .
This is the 23rd time that the host team in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup final has been seeking to stave off elimination and the odds are it won’t happen.
Fifteen previous times, the visiting team has won the contest to close out the series and win the Cup. . .If the Wings win the Cup, Darren Helm will become the player who’s won the Cup in each of his first two seasons while playing the fewest number of regular-season games. Helm has appeared in 23 NHL regular-season games, and Game 6 of the final would be his 39th Stanley Cup game.

More trivia, from STATS inc, via CBC.ca:
The home team has won the first five games of the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since the 2002-03 postseason, when New Jersey defeated Anaheim 4-3, the home team winning all seven contests.
Over the last three postseasons, the Red Wings have won nine series, winning the clinching game on the road seven times (including last season’s Stanley Cup finals).
Pittsburgh was shut out for the fifth time this season in Game 5 Saturday. After each of the previous four such losses, the Penguins rebounded to win their next game.
Chris Osgood earned his 15th career postseason shutout in Game 5, fourth most all-time. He trails only Martin Brodeur (23), Patrick Roy (23), and Curtis Joseph (16).
Pavel Datsyuk returned to the ice Saturday after missing seven games with a foot injury, and registered two assists. The Red Wings are 8-0 this postseason when Datsyuk records a point.
