H2H Update: No Limits To Hockeytown’s Generosity

Updated 1737. While we’re on the subject of helping others during the holiday season and beyond, check out what your Wings did today. Awesome.
This is no longer an A2Y endeavor. It’s so far beyond Abel to Yzerman at this point. It’s Detroit Red Wing fans from literally all over the world coming together for two great causes: getting Herm to the Joe in March, and collecting money for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan.
Yes, this will be an annual event. A different cause each year, in association with helping out the kids. Something creative and something cool for a Wing fan who may not be able to afford it, otherwise.
Here’s the amazing thing, more than the money. It’s the community of fans getting together to help organize this. JennyQuarx and Msevern are two of the 19 who have taken it upon themselves to handle a huge amount of the logistics: from organizing a bulk ticket purchase, to contacting the team and the hospital. And there are more. Suggestions are pouring in for restaurants, hotels, etc. And Osrt, innocently of course, is going to put Herm up for his time in Hockeytown.
It’s all over Twitter and rumor has it Herm’s become quite the popular fella on Facebook. Every Wing blog we read has mentioned this thing and it’s being picked up by others, as well.
Need some background on Herm to Hockeytown? Read here, here and here.
As of 5pm EST, our current total is: $1685.03. There will be no caps, no max limits. Every dollar going to fund the trip or help the kids. If you haven’t spread the word on this thing, please do.
“Normal” hockey discussion will resume tonite or tomorrow morning. One subject you may want to consider, because I’m gonna blast you with it: Booing Hossa is not a Detroit pastime. It belongs in Pittsburgh, not Hockeytown.

Wait...what?
Posted by Osrt on 12/22/09 at 06:41 PM ET
I love this, and I love the choice of charity.
Why? Because it’s the same Detroit hospital that Penny Arcade supports through their annual Child’s Play charity (amongst other hospitals).
http://www.childsplaycharity.org/
If you guys want a sobering number… the $1600 we’ve raised for Herm so far is completely awesome… but Gabe and Tycho at Penny Arcade have raised almost $1.4 MILLION this year already to donate to Children’s hospitals around literally the entire world. And for the record, their “year” started in November… and they raised nearly $500k in the first week alone.
I love the idea of this being an annual event. If Child’s Play is any indicator, there’s no limits to how far this thing could go in a few years… might I suggest that we organize this with a few other big-name hockey fan blogs heading into next year and go from there? I love the idea of rival hockey blogs banding together late every year to raise money for charity…

Short term memory loss is a consequence of these things. Oh well. Welcome home Herm.
who’s hooking up the trip to take Herm to the Flight Club before the game?
Posted by Nathan
Penthouse is down the street. They hired all the hottest dancers in the area and added bling; good recipe. And Herm will be able to say he went to a strip club on 8 Mile. Talk about street cred. And diseases. Should be a good time.

I’m sure the Penis Blog girls wouldn’t mind coming up with a Charity Champion belt to hand out to the blog that gets the most donations.

Boring paperwork update: this afternoon I gathered all the needed documents to renew my passport, first step to get the visa. I scheduled the passsport for tomorrow afternoon, and estimated time for expedition is of 7 days.
As soon as it’s ready, I’ll schedule the visa interview.

OMG. There used to be a great pizza place, deep dish like, and I mean deep with ingredients not with a thick crust to make it deceptively appear deep, on McNichols (Six Mile) east of Woodward, but I can’t remember its name - doubt it’s still there.
I lived in the Downtown YMCA for 4 months while attending the Detroit College of Law around the corner, needless to say I think that is now deep deep right field of Comerica Park.
There used to be some very generous fellows who would offer you the comfort of female companionship for a very reasonable fee. Some would call them pimps, I’m told. “Black ones, White ones, Spanish ones” they’d tell me as they appeared as if by magic out of dark corners along Woodward Avenue and suddenly appear beside me as I walked back from the river front to the Y on early Saturday evenings.
But I don’t think that qualifies me as a tour guide.... but I’m willing to learn.
I have tix to the Frozen Four in April at Ford Field, don’t know if I can swing a trip at the end of March (lemme check is that still THE date) too. If no one of interest is in the Frozen Four I may end up ebay-ing my tix set.

MEMO TO GARY BETTMAN: This is how you grow the game. (not the stripper part but the Herm to Hockeytown part) Every franchise should make an attempt to bring in an outside fan. As they say: To whom much is given (all of us), much is expected (your fellow man). Cheers to all who are participating in this endeavor. What goes around comes around.

Excellent. One way NOT to grow the game is scattering players around every year without the permanency that develops fan loyalty.

Shit.
I sure picked the wrong day to work late at work - I missed so much stuff!
At least Jenny has my email so I will be kept in the loop.
I did read about a cheap hotel adjacent to one of the restaurants that was being discussed as a place to eat before the game (I think). That might be an argument in favor of that place as a location to gather, if several people are staying close by.

I finally gave a few bucks to the cause. Awesome frickin’ work 19 and all others in the hockey community to get this done.
I probably will not be able to make it to the D. I really want to be there as it would be my first game at the Joe but I don’t think leaving Mrs. BeanLand alone with Hank and Pav setting each other up for fantastic dekes and top shelf scores in her womb will go over too well. She’ll probably need a lot of help with things by then.

I big heartfelt thank you to all of you Chief, Jenny Mserven, Matt Saler, orst, and all the rest. This is an awesome thing to be a part of.
If you’re interested in starting a list of potential charities, I have a very good one for the 19 to consider. It’s part of the reason why I was only able to contribute a little bit to the H2H fund. Most of the money I had available went to purchasing toys.
The charity that I want to recommend is called Juliana’s Toys for Joys. My friend RaiAnn has a beautiful little girl named Juliana who was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer when she was only 4 months old. The odds were stacked against her but Juliana is an amazing child who has fought very courageously against the cancer that invaded her tiny body. She is now 6 years old and remarkably is in remission. When she grows up, Juliana wants to be cop AND a doctor so that she can heal people by day and protect them at night. She started Juliana’s Toys for Joys to raise enough new unwrapped toys, games, and gift cards to pass out to all the kids at the VanElslander Cancer Center at St. John Hospital in Detroit (the treatment center where Juliana has received her treatment). These kids soooo deserve these toys. Some sit from an hour to SIX hours a day getting treatments and if they get something new and it makes them smile. I’m taking a truckload of presents there on Christmas Eve. Let me tell you, it is worth every single penny.
Here’s a couple of articles from last year of Juliana being sworn in as an honorary police officer:

Excellent hearing you on the podcast, Chief. Well done again.
Side note: Malik sounds exactly like I expected him to. He’s got the voice of a guy you’d love to share a beer with and will try to avoid a fight, but will end your shit if you push him too far.

Kids and Grandkids tonight for the early holiday celebration.
I don’t expect the Hawks to be in a very good mood after the SJ game.
I can’t understand why Huet looks like Brodeur against the Wings, and
then looks like Cheveldae against the Sharks. Doubt we will see him tonight.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:
