Happy Birthday Budd Lynch

Great story from the Detroit News’ Neil Rubin.

Now he wears a bulky ring commemorating the 2002 championship, with his name and a replica of the Cup and a thimbleful of diamond chips. “The players got mad,” Lynch says, setting up another punch line at his own expense. With his fingers swollen from arthritis, “I got more gold than they did.”

Lynch has seen more Red Wings games than anyone on the planet, and, as he likes to point out, he’s never bought a ticket. As best he can remember, he’s never missed a day at the microphone.

A couple Budd Lynchisms if you don’t mid… “The save was in the Nick of time and the Nick was Libbet.”
Another time Budd turned to his broadcast partner Bruce Martin and mentioned he couldn’t find the puck during a mad scramble in the goal crease.  “It’s in the net Budd!”

Budd Lynch is a legend.

However these days his slurring and butchering of the players names is more a source of amusement to my friends and I than an appreciation for a broadcast legend.

The running joke with my friends is as the game goes on so does the scotch so by the third period Henrik Zetterberg is Shrenick Schettverg.

Still it’s neat to have such a legend still doing the games.

I remember him saying that he doesn’t feel that his job is to be a cheerleader on the microphone. Thus his straightforward style of delivery.

Should the next announcer do more energizing the crowd? Is this part of the PR that would help attract people and/ or make the home game more of an ‘experience’?

...I loved the way he says Yzerman’s name…

Budd is a stud and I hope he is around for a long time.  However, the person who takes over his announcing position should be a bit more “energizing”.

Budd is amazing.  I for one, love his voice, and his “matter-of-fact” delivery.  He reminds me of the PA guy at Yankee Stadium, Bob Sheppard (actually vice versa).  I don’t believe we need some freaking lunatic cheerleader at the mic.  If the talent cannot gain the emotion of the crowd, the club is in deep voodoo anyway.  I don’t need some idiot telling me to cheer when we score or kill a penalty.  Especially not in an original six barn.  EGAD
